Invited Symposium: Personality Development, Resilience and Psychopathology Organizers: Ivan Mervielde, Ghent University, Belgium & Frosso Motti-Stefanidi, University of Athens, Greece. Temperament/personality and parenting as risk or resilience factors for child and adolescent psychopathology Karla VAN LEEUWEN 1, Ivan MERVIELDE 2, & Sarah DE PAUW 2 1 K.U.Leuven, Belgium, 2 Ghent University, Belgium Evidence will be presented for the hypothesis that individual differences in children and adolescents can be a risk or resilience factor for psychopathology in the presence of specific parental behavior. Previously, we studied statistical interactions between personality and parenting in the prediction of child internalizing and externalizing problem behavior, in school-aged children and adolescents, in cross-sectional and longitudinal data (Van Leeuwen et al., 2004), and in referred and non-referred samples (Van Leeuwen et al., 2007). More recently, we examined temperament/personality by parenting interactions in young children (aged 3 to 6). In this study a Five Factor measure was included to assess personality in young children, in addition to three more traditional measures of temperament, based on the models of Thomas and Chess, Buss and Plomin, and Rothbart. We will discuss the contribution of these findings to the understanding of the etiology of psychopathology in children and adolescents, as well as some implications for clinical practice.status: Publishe

TEMPERAMENT VERSUS PERSONALITY IN YOUNG CHILDREN: RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTING & PSYCHOPATHOLOGY Karla G. Van Leeuwen, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Ghent University, H. Dunantlaan 2, 9000 Ghent, Belgium; Sarah De Pauw, M.D. & Ivan Mervielde, Ph.D. Objective: The goodness-of-fit theory (Thomas & Chess, 1977) assumes that a mismatch between a child’s temperament and parenting practices may lead to the development of child problem behavior. This study examines interactions between child characteristics and parenting in the prediction of child internalizing and externalizing problem behavior. Individual differences in children are assessed by (a) three different temperament models (Thomas & Chess, Buss & Plomin, Rothbart) and (b) the Five Factor model of personality. Method: Parents of 189 4to5-year old children (42.9% boys, 57.1% girls) were recruited by undergraduate psychology students contacting individual families. Questionnaires were partly completed by mothers and partly by fathers. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses show several parenting by temperament interactions predicting child problem behavior, in particular when the Thomas and Chess model is used. However, there are also significant parenting by personality interactions related to child psychopathology. We also found strong independent effects of negative parental control and several temperament and personality dimensions. Conclusion: The results support the hypothesis that children scoring differently on specific temperament dimensions also vary in their sensitivity to parental influences. They further indicate that the Five Factor model may be a valuable measure of individual differences among young children, in addition to the more traditional temperament measures.status: Publishe

This text reveals the identity of the hitherto unknown author one of the oldest known ethnographic record from the island of Korčula. The manuscript titled “Narodne pjesme junačke i žetelačke” (Folk Songs of Heroes and Harvesters) dates back to 1892 and is preserved in the Archive of the Ethnology Division at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. Although the author of the manuscript is signed as “Ivan Žuvela, legal scholar,” his precise identification has remained elusive, with incorrect assumptions and even speculation about a possible pseudonym. Through research of available sources and newspaper records, it has now been conclusively determined that the author is indeed Ivan Žuvela from Vela Luka, a member of the Šabo family, and a law student who passed away at the age of 23, just a year after creating this manuscript. In addition to introducing the author, this text provides a detailed exploration of the manuscript and its exceptional significance for studying the everyday life of the past, particularly the harvesting customs on the western part of the island of Korčula

Towards an Augmented Reality Game for Learning about Ivan Vazov's Literary Works

    No full text
This paper presents a concept for a serious game based on an augmented reality representation of a mural artwork located in the National Library “Ivan Vazov” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The mural features the renowned Bulgarian author Ivan Vazov in the center, surrounded by characters from his literary works. By using a head-mounted display in front of the mural, the players would see movement of the characters and will be able to interact with them in a gamified augmented reality environment. The serious game proposed in this paper offers a solution to the engagement of players with literature and textual heritage within a broader cultural context
