The radical right in Europe, between slogans and voting behavior. IHS Political Science Series No. 123, July 2011

    No full text
The paper analyzes the radical right‘s attitudes toward the EU focusing in particular on the level of congruence between the programmatic statements of the central office and the voting behavior of their MEPs. It shows that although radical right parties represent a source of opposition to the EU, within the EP they express their dissent making use of the rules of the game, voting with the opposition more than the other forces do, but voting almost as much with the majority. The party public office in the EP is inserted in the legislative process and even more collusive with the other parties of both sides of the political spectrum than the Eurosceptical rhetoric and statements of central office makes the public believe

Nicolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), the well-known Florentine thinker, has not rarely been the object of sharp distortions. This article, assuming that the above mentioned author introduced the conception of State into political thought, tries to examine briefly the relation between politics and power in his work. This leads us to the question of the use of violence in the political ground, a topic of great interest nowadays.

AVERTIMENTI SOPRA LE REGOLE TOSCANE DI NICOLÒ TANI: TRADIZIONE E GRAMMATICOGRAFIA

    No full text
Nicolò Tani’s “Avertimenti sopra le regole toscane”: tradition and grammarography This contribution aims to provide a historical and grammatical overview of Nicolò Tani's Avertimenti sopra le regole Toscane, in order to identify, in addition to the features conforming to the tradition of early sixteenth-century grammars, the peculiarities, originalities and innovations of the work. For the first time this grammar is analyzed organically both as a whole and in its parts. Starting, in fact, from the limited biographical information of Nicolò Tani, we move on to the analysis of the textual tradition of the work, to the author's intentions, to the dedication he drafted by proposing a complete overview of the grammar. In specifically analyzing the linguistic aspects, we focus on the parts of speech, verbal morphology and adherence to the terminology of Latin grammar, making a constant comparison with the solutions adopted by grammarians coeval with the author, in order to highlight the elements of continuity and the innovations proposed by Tani. The comparison with the other works is also carried out with regard to considerations on authorial quotations. Concerning the latter, a perusal has been carried out, identifying within the grammar the passages taken from the literary canon, which are then filed in order to determine how many quotations there are for each work, from which compositions or proses the greatest number of exemplifications have been taken, and the ways through which Nicolò Tani quotes authors

    No full text
In this interview, musicologist and cultural historian Nicolò Palazzetti engages with actor and author Gian Marco Pellecchia to explore the history and contemporary relevance of the Commedia dell’arte. The aesthetic and poetic examination of Pellecchia’s successful show, Comœdia, performed since 2013, serves as a pretext to reflect on the myth of the Commedia dell’arte. This reflection encompasses a set of acting techniques, dramaturgical and narrative resources, and a method of positioning oneself within historical and media contexts. The discussion of the Commedia dell’arte thus becomes a means of rethinking theatrical fiction and, in certain respects, reinterpreting our contemporary era.

The paper aims to evaluate and discuss analytically the book written by Nicolò Russo, an author whose life and scientific activities remain obscure. Russo considers the evolution of the territory between Genoa and Savona from the “feudal” subjection to a more autonomous regime (under Genoese government) of the three communities which inhabited the area. Against this backdrop, we can observe the Malocelli, a Genoese family which at the end of the XIIth and during the XIIIth century held an important role, both as landowners and political figures, in what would eventually become the podesteria of Albisola, Celle and Varazze (XIVth century). This study provides a reappraisal of the history of this family by considering also recent studies on Genoa. Keywords: Territory, Aristocracy, Districts, Historiography, Erudition, Genoa, Savona

Nicolò Paganinis Haarlocke für Signora Chatterton – morphologische Haaruntersuchungen mittels digitaler Lichtmikroskopie

The famous violin virtuoso Nicolò Paganini (born on 27 October 1782 in Genoa, died on 27 May 1840 in Nice) left us with many puzzles. An interesting aspect is his hair: In the 19th century, hair given away as a token of friendship or romantic love became very popular, and Paganini also seems to have made use of this fad. In 2009, a lock of hair, purportedly that of Paganini, kept in a locked presentation box together with a bilingual autograph inscription saying: "Alla Signora Chatterton avec les compliments de Nicolò Paganini" was bought at an auction. From this hair lock a sample was taken and was investigated morphologically by using digital light microscopy (digital microscope VHX-100, Keyence) in reflected and transmitted light with and without polarization at different magnifications up to 1:5,000. The sample was then compared with a hair sample from the possession of the Paganini family, which had been microscopically examined in 2012 by the co-author of this paper yielding numerous figures with measurement results that had been stored and could be retrieved for direct comparison. The hair sample consisted of ten strands of hair or hair fragments and was investigated with great effort for the following parameters: exogenous hair damage, especially feeding traces caused by parasites, modeling and angulation of hairs, hair thickness, medulla and pigmentation, curling and mercury load on the trace material. After evaluation of all findings not only a non-exclusion of identity can be determined, but due to the broad match of also rare findings there is no reasonable doubt about their identity. In addition, the findings suggest that the studied hair samples are in fact from Paganini's head. The present case of Nicolò Paganini's hair lock is also an excellent starting point for reflections on the probative value of trace hair investigations. This point is also critically discussed in the paper. Finally, this study shows that said lock of hair had probably really been dedicated and given to Eliza Davenport Latham (born on 25 November 1806, died on 9 January 1877), the future wife of the, at that time, best-known and most famous English harpist John Balsir Chatterton (born on 25 November 1804, died on 9 April 1871). Paganini must have met her on his concert tour 1831/32, where he had travelled to Paris, London, the rest of England, Scotland and Ireland

On September 1st, 2023, three specimens of the blue button Porpita porpita (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) were found stranded along the store of the Genoa metropolitan area (northwest Mediterranean Sea, Ligurian Sea) as a result of a citizen science contribution. This record represents the second observation of the species in this area after the first one, occurred in 2019. The general increase in observations of P. porpita in the Mediterranean basin, from 2010 on, may suggest a higher abundance of specimens in the sea, likely due to climate change, an intensified effort in reporting sightings of citizens scientist (whose data accounts for more than 85% of total available records), or a combination of both factors. The analysis of environmental data related to this latest stranding event suggests that this occurred under specific meteorological conditions. Since monitoring the spread of non-indigenous species is fundamental to study global warming effects on marine biodiversity, the understanding of the precise environmental settings under which they may occur might reduce observational biases and contribute to the acquisition of sound data less linked to fortuitous observations.

Wi-Fi channel frequency response database for contactless human activity recognition

This database collects the channel frequency response (CFR) vectors captured through the Nexmon CSI extraction tool from an Asus RT-AC86U IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi router working with a total bandwidth of 80 MHz. The dataset is collected in three different environments, i.e., a bedroom, a living room and a University laboratory, while one person performs one among seven activities of interest within the room. The CFR data for the empty room (E) is also provided. We obtained data from three volunteers (a male, and two females) while they were walking (W) or running (R) around, jumping (J) in place, sitting (L) or standing (S) somewhere in the room, sitting down and standing up (C) continuously, and doing arm gym (H). Each CFR sample results in complex-valued channel information from 242 data sub-channels for each transmit-receive antennas pair. In our experiments, with one transmitter antenna and four at the monitoring device, each sample corresponds to four vectors of 242 complex values. Although the total number of sub-channels at 80 MHz is 256, each antenna vector has 242 components as the CFR is only provided for data sub-channels, namely sub-channels whose indexes are {-122, ..., -2} and {2, ..., 122}, i.e., no CFR value is provided for the control sub-channels. For more information about the setup, please, refer to the related publication. This dataset was used to design and assess the performance of SHARP presented in the article ''SHARP: Environment and Person Independent Activity Recognition with Commodity IEEE 802.11 Access Points'' by Francesca Meneghello, Domenico Garlisi, Nicolò Dal Fabbro, Ilenia Tinnirello, Michele Rossi.
