Alice Miel and Democratic Schooling: An Early Curriculum Leader\u27s Ideas on Social Learning and Social Studies
Alice Miel, a nationally prominent curriculum development scholar-practitioner at Teachers College of Columbia University for some three decades (1942-1971), frequently has been overlooked in research on the nature and evolution of the curriculum field and the progressive education movement. Furthermore, her contributions have been overlooked even as attention to women in the curriculum field and in educational history has risen. This study addresses this oversight.
Miel became a leading figure in the curriculum field largely on the basis of her progressive-era advocacy and practice of democratic social learning as a primary goal of schooling in the United States. This study explores major influences on her ideas, her understandings of democratic concepts and principles, and her application of these concepts and principles both in her own college classroom and in her research on childhood education. It also explores Miel\u27s notions of the elementary school social studies :urriculum and situates those notions within the context of the conventional wisdom of her day regarding a discipline-centered curriculum.
In a broader context, this study contributes to the body of curriculum history scholarship. According to Kliebard (1992), for example, curriculum history often deals with the relationship between social change and changing ideas and contains significant social and cultural artifacts of knowledge that have become embodied in the curriculum of schools. Davis (1976, 1977) characterizes curriculum history as a reflective enterprise for curriculum workers that contributes to their understanding of present courses of study and of the professional field by lending a framework for thoughtful deliberation of what the schools should teach. With these observations in mind, Miel\u27s work may be understood as both artifact of curriculum history and as mindful reflection, situated within a particular social and historical context, on democratic meanings and processes. Biographies of Caswell, Taba, Tyler, Schwab, Kilpatrick, Rugg, Bobbitt, Zirbes, Stratemeyer, and others have yielded significant insights. In addition, Seguel\u27s study of early curriculum leaders (1966) constitutes an important theoretical contribution to the field. The study of Miel\u27s life and work adds to this body of knowledge
Finding Aid to the Collection of Alice Brown Materials.
Alice Brown (12/5/1857 - 6/21/1948) was born in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. She graduated from Robinson Seminary in Exeter, N.H., in 1876, and taught in local schools for five years before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, to write full time. There, she wrote and did editorial work for the Christian Register, followed by The Youth\u27s Companion, and published on average a book a year until 1935, continuing to write shorter works into the 1940s. Brown wrote novels, short stories, plays, and poetry, much of which focused on local New England settings. She also wrote biographies and travelogues. The bulk of the author\u27s personal correspondence was destroyed at her wishes upon her death in 1948.
The collection contains letters (1895 - 1944) from Alice Brown to various correspondents, including some literary figures (Sarah Orne Jewett, Charles E. L. Wingate) and editors of publications (Boston Evening Transcript, Colby Library Quarterly). The collection also contains some First Appearances of the author\u27s published work (Harper\u27s Monthly magazine, The Youth\u27s Companion)

This thesis consists in an analysis of play and game(s) in Lewis Carroll s two major literary works, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, in which diegetic, narratological, stylistic and linguistic games play a significant part. It shows that a tension is at work throughout the Alice books, between freedom and rules (between paidia, the impulsive manifestation of a play instinct, and ludus, the need to invent rules and to abide by them, to state this in Caillois s terms). The study of games and toys, of the macro- and micro-structures, of the style and the intertexts reveals the playfulness of these texts, as they rely on legafreedom , freedom in, and made possible by legality (Duflo). They play with and against the reader s commonsensical expectations, language and knowledge. Yet, at the same time, the virtual reader s playing field is considerably limited: his or her faculties of ideation are directed by the interweaving of text and illustrations, and his or her participation (involvement?) in constructing the Carrollian text is restricted to filling in the textual blanks, as defined by Eco, i.e. making the already said that has been erased reappear. Carroll s works are, therefore, characterized by this paradoxical idea: while the diegesis and the textual economy seem to promote play, the role of the Model Reader as mapped out by the text is extremely circumscribed. However, the real reader, interpellated by the Carrollian text and its Author, can take on the role of the Impostor Reader, counter-interpellate them, and become, thanks to this process of subjectification, a consummate playing reader. As such, legafreedom makes it possible to understand not only the aesthetics of play, but also the formation of subjects (characters, authors, readers) in the Alice books.NANTERRE-BU PARIS10 (920502102) / SudocSudocFranceF

Reading between the blurred lines: A discussion into the representation of rape and rape culture in contemporary fiction
In this dissertation, the focus will be on the representation of rape and rape culture within contemporary fiction; the aim of this is to discover how prevalent rape and rape culture is within this particular area. The thesis is split into three chapters, the first of which discusses the depictions of male rape and gender shifts in contemporary fiction, focusing on Lisbeth Salander as a rapist in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The second chapter follows on from this, discussing the portrayal of victims of rape within contemporary fiction; and the last chapter debates whether or not a perpetuating rape culture means that women cannot be as sexually experimental as they wish to be. The aim of the dissertation is to focus on how authors depict rape, and whether or not this depiction is perpetuating rape culture, or simply addressing the issue within fiction. The introduction is a larger part of the dissertation, setting up exactly what rape and rape culture is, and how rape myths prevail in modern western society. There are certain areas that the dissertation has not addressed, such as race, because they are such complex issues that merely by giving them a single chapter within the dissertation would not be enough. The dissertation’s main purpose, and main area of focus, is to illustrate the perpetuating rape culture in western societies through gender inequality
La tutela della vita prenatale: profili comparatistici
The author outlines the principal questions concerning the artificial insemination in criminal law and, by examinig the major dispositions stated by the L. n. 40/2004 – Rules about medically assisted procreation - and the correlated D.M. 21 july 2004, put in evidence that such a normative plots realizes a consistent protection of the embryo as subject titular of right. The author examines all the sanctions in L. 40/2004, analysing in detail the prohibitions of art. 12, 13, 14 and the juridical estates protected by them. Later, it is proceeded to a comparative analysis of the norms that govern the P.M.A., in the states members of the European Union, with a specific reference to the aforesaid aspects.
Finally, she concentrates particular attention on theme concerning the pre-impiantation diagnosis who appeared in the clinical practice together with the introduction of artificial fertilization techniques, as a way to improve the success of FIVET, by selecting the embryos of higher quality and analyse the legal position about this subject.
Performance of the ALICE VZERO system
See paper for full list of authors - 20 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, author from page 15 t0 20ALICE is an LHC experiment devoted to the study of strongly interacting matter in proton--proton, proton--nucleus and nucleus--nucleus collisions at ultra-relativistic energies. The ALICE VZERO system, made of two scintillator arrays at asymmetric positions, one on each side of the interaction point, plays a central role in ALICE. In addition to its core function as a trigger, the VZERO system is used to monitor LHC beam conditions, to reject beam-induced backgrounds and to measure basic physics quantities such as luminosity, particle multiplicity, centrality and event plane direction in nucleus-nucleus collisions. After describing the VZERO system, this publication presents its performance over more than four years of operation at the LHC
The role of the third sector in work with offenders: the perceptions of criminal justice and third sector stakeholders
This paper examines the views of national criminal justice and third sector stakeholders on the strategic position of the sector, and its role in the resettlement of offenders. The interview data suggests that although the involvement of the third sector in the criminal justice system is promoted in national policy, considerable gaps have been identified. These include the quality and availability of regional commissioning, implementation strategies and the long-term plans for the re-specification of the criminal justice system. The findings also indicate that increasing emphasis on competitive policy may put a strain on future inter-sector partnerships. The implications of the findings are discussed and areas of further research are highlighted in relation to both the prison and probation services.<br/
