Abstract : Central to all vine management is the yield x quality ratio. This is largely a function of the fruit mass (kg) to photosynthetic surface area (m2) borne by the vine. It provides a measure of the vine's capacity to ripen a crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate different leaf area x yield ratios in the quality of Merlot and Syrah grapevines produced in São Joaquim - Santa Catarina State. The study was conducted at São Joaquim Experimental Station - EPAGRI vineyards (28°16'30,08"S, 49°56'09,34"O, altitude 1,400m) and the evaluations took place in 2010/2011 vintage. Syrah was submitted to four different crop loads, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 and 2.0 kg of crop per m2 of leaf area. Merlot was submitted to three different crop loads, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kg of crop per m2 of leaf area. At harvest were determined the components of technological maturity (total soluble solids, pH and total acidity) and the components of phenolic maturity (total polyphenols and anthocyanins). The results showed that different leaf area x yield ratios did not affect the technological maturity of Merlot and Syrah grapevines. The lowest yield obtained with 0.5 kg of crop per m2 of leaf area ratio resulted in the highest anthocyanin content for Syrah. In Merlot, plants that were not subjected to reduction in crop load, which maintained a 1.5 kg of crop per m2 of leaf area ratio, produced grapes with higher contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins

For years, noted writer Laurence A. Rickels often found himself compared to novelist Philip K. Dickthough in fact Rickels had never read any of the science fiction writers work. When he finally read his first Philip K. Dick novel, while researching for his recent book The Devil Notebooks , it prompted a prolonged immersion in Dicks writing as well as a recognition of Rickelss own long-documented intellectual pursuits. The result of this engagement is I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick , a profound thought experiment that charts the wide relevance of the pulp sci-fi author and paranoid visionary. I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick explores the science fiction authors meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism, Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Covering all of Dicks science fiction, Rickels corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. The AM Canum Venaticorum binary SDSS J173047.59+554518.5

The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of hydrogen-deficient, ultrashort period, mass-transferring white dwarf binaries and are possible progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the recently discovered AM CVn binary SDSS J173047.59+554518.5. The average spectrum shows strong double-peaked helium emission lines, as well as a variety of metal lines, including neon; this is the second detection of neon in an AM CVn binary, after the much brighter system GP Com. We detect no calcium in the accretion disc, a puzzling feature that has been noted in many of the longer period AM CVn binaries. We measure an orbital period, from the radial velocities of the emission lines, of 35.2 ± 0.2 min, confirming the ultracompact binary nature of the system. The emission lines seen in SDSS J1730 are very narrow, although double-peaked, implying a low-inclination, face-on accretion disc; using the measured velocities of the line peaks, we estimate i ≤ 11°. This low inclination makes SDSS J1730 an excellent system for the identification of emission lines

Murder & Merlot: An Interactive Mystery Experience

As a maximalist specializing in illustration, I use common elements to visually connect my work and make the narrative and aesthetic more cohesive. Bold colors and patterns enhance detailed imagery, character design, and environmental design, along with monochromatic and complementary palettes. These elements are often paired with similar typography. All font choices are deliberately representative of the personality of each individual piece and its voice. Each suspect has their own signature font to help the viewer visually connect to the character, but the entirety of Murder & Merlot is branded in such a way that it has a specific heading font, Theories, a subheading font, Haarlem Deco, and a body font, Avenir Next Condensed. Work flow begins with visual research and references. Flat, crisp, vector illustrations with many vibrant colors are some of my favorite things about graphic design. The way that small organic shapes come together to produce a larger interesting image is something I am always working to achieve. Masking patterns over flat areas or blocks of color is a fun way to strategically add texture and dimension. I draw inspiration from Neethi, an illustrator who uses shape, perspective, and loud patterns and colors to grab viewers’ attention and their eyes around the piece. Lulu Debreuil is another illustrator from whom I take heavy inspiration. She uses all of the aforementioned elements, especially flat shapes with patterns, to create gorgeous, captivating imagery. To avoid visually overwhelming an audience with too many conflicting elements, I take breaks during my workflow to view my progress from afar. Working with software where layers can be hidden is essential when deciding how much is too much. Balancing white space and intricate detail is a crucial step in my process because it is important to give the viewer’s eyes a place to rest among so much visual stimulation. This is something I use to my advantage in Murder & Merlot. Manipulating where a viewer will go for rest after high amounts of visual intake allows room for hidden clues and messages that may not be otherwise interpreted. Growing up, I watched old mysteries with my family. Alfred Hitchcock, Agatha Christie, Clue, and other icons of the genre brought us together and gave us a common interest. In an attempt to share that bond with others, I have completely brought to life an interactive murder mystery exhibit where viewers can observe all of my designs which will help them solve the mystery. I have incorporated a variety of different skill sets such as layout, composition, typography, color, character design, and illustration. The aesthetic is vibrant, but mysterious, and immerses the viewer into the world of the characters making them feel as if they are involved. Each character has colors, patterns, and display fonts, as well as a poster detailing their role within the mystery. Clues are displayed throughout the exhibit, along with additional posters and artifacts from the story to aid the viewer in their investigation and the final solution. The ultimate goal is for the audience to come together and have a memorable connection, similar to what Agatha Christie did for my grandmother and me. Using illustration and graphics to make others feel excited and included is part of why design is important, and an interactive exhibit where the viewer becomes a fundamental part of the piece achieves this goal by providing an opportunity to unite an audience. Murder & Merlot is saturated with imagination and creativity in the hope that it will allow others to feel the same sense of excitement that I feel when designing.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art498/1126/thumbnail.jp

Freedom of choice or force of circumstance? : Eastern European sex-workers in the Republic of Cyprus ; paper for the conference 'Alltag der Globalisierung. Perspektiven einer transnationalen Anthropologie', January 16-18, 2003, Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main

This paper focuses on Eastern European migrants who, since the beginning of the 1990s, are entering the Republic Cyprus as “artistes”. This is a visa permit status as well as an euphemism for short-term work permits in the local sex industry. In addition to exploring the migrational experiences of these women and their living and working conditions in the Republic of Cyprus, the paper reconstructs, empirically and analyt ically, the connection between immigration and the local sex industry. Here, several categories of social actors and institutions in Cyprus are actively involved. The rhetoric of government representatives, entrepreneurs and clients in the sex business on the one hand is contrasted with the discourse of local NGO representatives concerned with immigrants’ rights on the other hand. The paper comes to the conclusion that all of these discursive positions ultimately do not do justice to the complex process of decisionmaking that women undergo who migrate into the sex industry. Either, freedom of choice is emphasized – such as by entrepreneurs and the government – or the domination of women – as in the public statements of the NGO. In order to analyze the ambivalent tension between freedom of choice and submission to force by which the women’s decision is characterized, the author employs Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality, which describes forms of political regulation that use the individual’s freedom of action as an instrument to exercise power
