Luis Villacañas, Giuseppe Duso, Michele Basso, Adone Brandalise, Angela De Benedictis, Maurizio Merlo, Luise Schorn-Schütte, Paolo Slongo, Alfredo Viggiano.
ELECTRICAL-RESISTIVITY OF SOME LAAG,CEAG,YAG EQUIATOMIC COMPOUNDS
The electrical resistivity of the intermetallic compounds LaAg, CeAg and YAg has been measured in the range 10-800 K. The data on YAg are described by the usual Block-Gruneisen formula, but both CeAg and LaAg show higher resistivity values and a different thermal dependence. These anomalies can be ascribed to valence instabilities of the two rare earths, but, unlike most phases with unstable cerium and ytterbium atoms, the corresponding resistivity anomaly does not saturate in the temperature range studied
Descriptive analysis and evaluation of the components of the quarter
The author reflects on Michele Taruffo’s extraordinarily important contribution to the renewal of both conventional procedural law scholarship and the theoretical background of law-court professionals. Taruffo’s contribution was achieved by means of introducing to mainstream culture in those circles the necessary knowledge of the underlying epistemic dimension, which was traditionally suppressed by the strictly legal one.
The ruling class: management and politics in modern Italy
There is a longstanding tradition of sociological studies on the ruling class.
Economists devoted so far much less attention than sociologists to the study of ruling classes. This is a pity as a number of theoretical tools of economists can be rather powerful in understanding what drives the formation of a ruling class. In particular, the tools of labour economics can be very useful in characterizing the selection of the ruling class, the labour market of politicians, the allocation of time of managers, their incentives, remunerations and career paths.
This volume contributes to filling these gaps. It draws on contributions from two teams of leading scholars in the field and on a large data gathering effort undertaken by the Fondazione Rodolfo Debenedetti.
The first part of the book draws on detailed information on personal characteristics, incomes, performance in office and career paths (before, after as well as during the Parliamentary mandate) of all the politicians who have been elected to the Italian Lower Chamber (Camera) between 1948 and 2008. This is the first time that this information is gathered and summarized in some key indicators.
The second part of the volume is based on a variety of sources, including cross-country surveys of managers covering a very interesting sample of European countries, ad-hoc surveys carried out in co-operation with the largest union of managers in the service sector, social security records, and, last but not least, the first time-use survey ever carried out on the allocation of time of top executives
Structural anomaly in GdNiAl: a crystallographic, electric and magnetic investigation
Low temperature electrical resistivity and X-ray powder diffraction measurements showed a transformation paint at about 200 K, attributed to a transition between two slightly different crystallographic forms of the ZrNiAl type. A corresponding anomaly was observed in the thermal behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility, and the results were analyzed in the framework of the RKKY theory. Ferromagnetic ordering occurs at 57 K, and two other transition temperatures, 30 and 14 K, were detected: these points, as already observed for TbNiAl, DyNiAl and HoNiAl may be imputed to order-order magnetic transitions
Distributed Social Platforms for Confidentiality and Resilience
Social networking sites have deeply changed the perception of the web in the last years. Although the current approach to build social networking systems is to create huge centralized systems owned by a single company, such strategy has many drawbacks, e.g., lack of privacy, lack of anonymity, risks of censorship and operating costs. These issues contrast with some of the main requirements of information systems, including: (i) confidentiality, i.e., the interactions between a user and the system must remain private unless explicitly public; (ii) integrity; (iii) accountability; (iv) availability; (v) identity and anonymity. Moreover, social networking platforms are vulnerable to many kind of attacks: (i) masquerading, which occurs when a user disguises his identity and pretends to be another user; (ii) unauthorized access; (iii) denial of service; (iv) repudiation, which occurs when a user participates in an activity and later claims he did not; (v) eavesdropping; (vi) alteration of data; (vii) copy and replay attacks; and, in general, (viii) attacks making use of social engineering techniques. In order to overcome both the intrinsic defects of centralized systems and the general vulnerabilities of social networking platforms, many different approaches have been proposed, both as federated (i.e., consisting of multiple entities cooperating to provide the service, but usually distinct from users) or peer-to-peer systems (with users directly cooperating to provide the service); in this work the most interesting ones were reviewed. Eventually, the authors present their own approach to create a solid distributed social networking platform consisting in a novel peer-to-peer system that leverages existing, widespread and stable technologies such as distributed hash tables and BitTorrent. The topics considered in detail are: (i) anonymity and resilience to censorship; (ii) authenticatable contents; (iii) semantic interoperability using activity streams and weak semantic data formats for contacts and profiles; and (iv) data availability
