    Antonietta Raphaël: Mysticism and Memory

    No full text
Master of Arts in Art History -- John Cabot University, Spring 2023.This thesis investigates Lithuanian 20th-century artist Antonietta Raphaël’s painting Due Sorelle. By consulting with primary resources and the miniscule contemporary literature on her, this thesis explains her intersectional identity through the methodology of memory. This is done by identifying the date of the painting (1940) and the iconography of the women in the painting. Due Sorelle was created during the tumultuous interwar period in Italy and in Antonietta Raphaël’s life. Yet it is a significant example of Raphaël’s intentional iconographic memory and profound spiritual loss of a past life that could not be reclaimed after World War II. With Due Sorelle, she constructs an image of two Judaic characters, Lilith and Eve, the first women, mothers of demons and humanity, and the first two sinners of Judaism, who were ousted from Eden. She intuitively paints a resistance towards the regime by constructing a memory and identity that serves as a narration of her past and present life

    Secondary Literacy Across the Curriculum

    No full text
This paper discusses the challenges and possibilities attendant upon successfully implementing literacy across the curriculum initiatives – or ‘school language policies’ as they have come to be known – particularly at the secondary or high school level. It provides a theoretical background to these issues, exploring previous academic discussions of school language policies, and highlights key areas of concern as well as opportunity with respect to school implementation of such policies. As such, it provides a necessary conceptual background to the subsequent papers in this special issue, which focus upon the Secondary Schools’ Literacy Initiative (SSLI) – a New Zealand funded programme that aims to establish cross-curricular language and literacy policies in secondary schools

International audienceIn the novel Gehen, ging, gegangen (2015, Go, Went, Gone, 2017), Jenny Erpenbeck refers to the migration movement that shook Europe in 2015. By questioning the arrival of displaced persons in Berlin, the author is part of the revival of literary realism, which is characterized by the implementation of social criticism in the novel. This article examines the question of how the narrator portrays the plurality and also the divergence of different standpoints, which are expressed in a fictional society – with particular attention to narratological strategies. It also shows how the inequality and powerlessness of displaced persons in Germany are represented in a literary form.

Comparison of early literacy attitudes of Head Start teachers and the frequency of literacy activities in Wisconsin Head Start classrooms

Plan BHead Start began a school readiness focus in 2000 with an emphasis on accountability when the National Head Start Bureau issued an outcomes framework for all Head Start programs. This was followed up by President Bush’s early childhood initiative, Good Start, Grow Smart. This initiative focused on early literacy and national accountability for all Head Start programs. In response to the national early literacy emphasis, the researcher developed a teacher survey to focus on early literacy attitudes, importance of early literacy activities and frequency of early literacy activities in Head Start classrooms. Demographic information was utilized to compare years of experience and educational level of teachers to attitudes and importance of early literacy in Head Start. Data was collected by sending a survey to 200 Head Start teachers in 56 Head Start agencies throughout the state of Wisconsin in February, 2002. One hundred forty six surveys were returned to the researcher, which yields a return rate of 73%. The Head Start teachers in Wisconsin were asked to participate in the study through their Head Start Director. The Head Start Directors asked teachers in their programs to complete the surveys. If the teachers wished to participate in the study, they completed the survey and returned it in a self-addressed stamped envelope. Level of teacher education and years of teaching experience made a difference in early literacy in Head Start classrooms. As educational level increases, attitudes about early literacy tend to also increase. A statistical significant difference was found at the .05 level between teachers with Associate degrees from those with Bachelor and Master level degrees. Along with early literacy attitudes increasing with educational attainment, the researcher also concluded that teachers feel more skilled teaching early literacy activities as their educational level increases. A significant difference at the .01 level was found between teachers with CDA’s, Associate and Bachelor degrees from those with Master’s degrees. As with level of education, a significant difference was found when comparing early literacy attitudes with years of teaching experience. Teachers with 3-5 years experience scored significantly different at the .05 level from those with 6-10 years of experience. Teachers with 6-10 years of experience scored highest in section two of the survey, attitudes about literacy. Teachers with 2 years or less of teaching experience scored the highest in section three of the survey, importance of teaching early literacy skills and teachers with 11 years or more of teaching experience scored highest on section four of the survey, frequency of literacy activities. This study would be beneficial if repeated one year from now, once the Head Start teachers have been trained in the CIRLCE literacy model and have had a chance to implement literacy strategies in the classroom. Comparing current early literacy attitudes, early literacy importance and frequency early literacy activities may be very different one year from now in Head Start classrooms based on continued training and mentoring support within their programs. The information collected though this survey was very useful in delineating necessary literacy training and technical assistance areas for Head Start teachers. Teachers reported spending the least amount of time on helping students to find letters in words and act out events from stories. These activities are two important literacy aspects for young children to experience. The data also showed teachers with 2 years or less teaching experience reported the highest scores in importance of early literacy skills. It is important for training and technical assistance providers to appreciate teacher differences based on years of teaching experience and level of education

An Exploration of Habitual Prospective Memory and its Implications for Individuals with Acquired Brain Injuries

    No full text
abstract: Prospective memory refers to the ability to form and carry out an intention. Prospective memory can be further divided into the subcategories of episodic and habitual prospective memory, which differ in their task demands and electrophysiological components. The focus of the present study is on habitual prospective memory, which is the ability to routinize and consistently fulfill intentions that occur repeatedly. This skill is especially useful for populations with impaired executive functioning and/or memory deficits, such as those with acquired brain injuries. The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of an undergraduate population on a habitual prospective memory task in order to create a baseline model for comparison with a clinical population. Evidence of habitization to the prospective memory component of the task was discovered, as demonstrated by speeded ongoing-task response times and reduced interference to prospective memory cues. Ongoing task accuracy and prospective memory cue detection were very high, while commission errors were very few, demonstrating ease of the task for neurotypical populations. We speculate that people with acquired brain injuries will not show as significant of a quickening of response times, nor such accurate performance on prospective memory cue trials or the commission error phase

We draw on the stereotype content model (SCM) to examine gendered patterns of media coverage of candidates on the trait dimensions of warmth and competence in the 2020 U.S. Democratic presidential primary. Combining Natural Language Processing and manual analysis of news, we find that female candidates receive more negative than positive warmth coverage, while male candidates receive more tonally balanced warmth coverage, which suggests that female leaders are penalized on the dimension of warmth. Additionally, white women received more warmth coverage than women of color and women of color receive more competence coverage than white women. The findings suggest news media may portray white women and women of color candidates as lacking gender congruent traits like warmth but may portray white women as possessing role congruent traits like competence
