    Copper Complexes with NH-Imidazolyl and NH-Pyrazolyl Units and Determination of Their Bond Dissociation Gibbs Energies

    We synthesized two dinuclear copper complexes, which have ionizable N imidazole and N pyrazole protons in the ligand, respectively, and determined the BDFE of the hypothetical H atom transfer reactions Cu-II(LH-1) + H-center dot Cu-I(L) in MeOH/H2O (BDFE: bond dissociation Gibbs (free) energy). The ligands have two adjacent N,N',O-binding pockets, which differ in one N-heterocycle: L-a has an imidazole unit and L-c, a pyrazole unit. The copper(II) complexes of L-a and L-c have been characterized, and the substitution pattern has only little influence on the structural properties. The BDFEs of the hypothetical PCET reactions have been determined by means of the species distribution and the redox potentials of the involved species in MeOH/H2O (80/20 by weight). The pyrazole copper complex 3 exhibits a lower BDFE than the isoelectronic imidazole copper complex 1 (1, 292(3) kJ mol(-1); 3, 279(1) kJ mol(-1)). The difference is mainly caused by the higher acidity of the N pyrazole proton of 3 compared to the N imidazole proton of 1.     The synthesis of three new ligands and their coordination behavior towards zinc ions with strongly coordinating anions and cobalt ions with weakly coordinating anions are reported. The ligands have two adjacent imidazolyl-pyridinyl and pyrazolyl-pyridinyl binding pockets, respectively, which are linked by a phenol unit. We also investigated the dynamic behavior of the ligand having the imidazolylpyridiyl sidearm in solution. The reaction of the ligands and ZnCl2 yielded complexes of the type [LZn2Cl3].     Effective theory of a doubly charged singlet scalar: complementarity of neutrino physics and the LHC

    We consider a rather minimal extension of the Standard Model involving just one extra particle, namely a single SU(2)LSU(2)_L singlet scalar S++S^{++} and its antiparticle SS^{--}. We propose a model independent effective operator, which yields an effective coupling of S±±S^{\pm \pm} to pairs of same sign weak gauge bosons, W±W±W^{\pm} W^{\pm}. We also allow tree-level couplings of S±±S^{\pm \pm} to pairs of same sign right-handed charged leptons lR±lR±l^{\pm}_Rl'^{\pm}_R of the same or different flavour. We calculate explicitly the resulting two-loop diagrams in the effective theory responsible for neutrino mass and mixing. We propose sets of benchmark points for various S±±S^{\pm \pm} masses and couplings which can yield successful neutrino masses and mixing, consistent with limits on charged lepton flavour violation (LFV) and neutrinoless double beta decay. We discuss the prospects for S±±S^{\pm \pm} discovery at the LHC, for these benchmark points, including single and pair production and decay into same sign leptons plus jets and missing energy. The model represents a minimal example of the complementarity between neutrino physics (including LFV) and the LHC, involving just one new particle, the S±±S^{\pm \pm}

    This paper, which is based on a portion of the introduction of the author’s edition of Il Romanzo di Alessandro (Mondadori: Fondazione Valla 2007), surveys the generic components of the Alexander Romance in an attempt to arrive at a definition of the work. The argument builds on Merkelbach’s categorisation of elements and uses Fusillo’s insight into the novel as an ‘encyclopaedic genre’ to propose that ‘historical novel’ is not, as Hägg contended, a misnomer for the work. The main components I discuss are: ‘life’; praxeis; chreiai; Cynic elements, including choliambic poetry and utopian perspectives; and the Egyptian aspects of the narrative. A concluding jeu d’esprit offers a characterisation of the putative author, his antecedents and his process of composition.Richard Stoneman was for 25 years editor for classics at Croom Helm and then Routledge. In 1997 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow in the department of classics, University of Exeter. After retiring from publishing in 2006 he has been pursuing his researches on the Alexander legends and teaching a course on the subject at Exeter. His Penguin translation of the Alexander Romance was published in 1991, and a volume of translated Legends of Alexander the Great appeared from Everyman in 1994. Also in 1994 he co-edited Greek Fiction with John Morgan. His edition of the Greek recensions of the Alexander Romance was published (volume I) by the Fondazione Valla in 2007 – volumes II and III will follow over the next few years – and his Alexander the Great: A Life in Legend appeared from Yale University Press in spring 2008. He is the author of a number of other books on Greek history and travel, and is writing a book on oracles
