    Esistenze recintate

Experiencing Service Learning with a Public Mental Health Service in Tuscany

Our Service Learning project was based on the studies about Service Learning (EUROPE ENGAGE, 2014), which identify it as an experience linking academic learning to civic engagement in a local community, and whose core values are trust, mutuality, interdependence, partnerships and co-creation of knowledge. The research in this topic (Baldwin, Buchanan, & Rudisill, 2007; McIlrath, 2012; Yorio, & Ye, 2012) highlights the positive outcomes both in the relationship between universities and local communities and the promotion of students' skills. The presented experience took place in the University of Florence, and has been undertaken experimentally during the first semester of academic year 2015/2016, in collaboration with a Public Mental Health in Florence Area. Ten students of the Master Degree in Psychology of the Life cycle and Contexts have been involved

Suicide is defined by multiple factors as psychiatric disorders and social problems. The attitudes towards mental health services, social support, and health prevention programs are considered important factors to prevent it. Self-efficacy, social capital, sense of community, social support are considered significant elements that can create a healthy community. This study is part of an action research carried out by Public Health Service, a local community where a high rate of suicide was reported and University of Florence. The research is aimed to investigate the perceptions about suicide and their impact on the local community, to explore sense of community and identify social risks and resources. Participants: 183 citizens Instruments: Multidimensional sense of community scale (MTSOCS), to explore membership, shared influence, help in case of need, social climate and bonds, and needs fulfillment; Ad hoc questionnaire; Focus Groups with health professionals and citizens. Data analysis was performed with qualitative and quantitative methods. Results. Data suggest that suicide and youth difficulties are perceived as critical events in the community. Social acceptance, reputation and isolation in case of psychological problems appear related to seeking help. Furthermore social climate and bonds are not perceived as significant community resources. Understanding how citizens perceive suicide is a crucial task to plan effective actions of intervention. Fostering participation and creating networks among the social resources are primary steps for community mental health promotion

Preventing violent radicalization in Italy: The actions of EU project PROVA

Marginalized minors and young adults engaging in deviant behaviors are considered to be at high risk for violent radicalization, because of their need to build strong social identities. We report 2 parts of a European Union (EU) Project PROVA, aimed at counteracting violent radicalization: (a) a qualitative study exploring perceptions about youth violent radicalization, with a sample of 16 professionals and 2 stakeholders working with minors and young adults at risk; (b) a participatory workshop with 15 minors/young adults in detention and 4 university students, aimed at fostering positive peer relationships and achieving civic engagement through the reimagination of collective spaces. Our findings highlight perceptions among professionals about preventive interventions. We also discuss the usefulness of the workshop toward reducing social conflicts, improving sociorelational skills, and decreasing the isolation of minors/young adults in detention

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
