Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Detecção de conglomerados de focos de Aedes aegypti em Joinville através da estatística de varredura espaço-temporal

Nesse sentido, esta dissertação aborda a estatística de varredura de Kulldorff (estatística Scan) para a detecção de conglomerados espaço-temporais de focos de Aedes aegypti na zona urbana de Joinville, Santa Catarina. O controle deste vetor é de grande preocupação para as cidades brasileiras, que tem dificuldades para conter a infestação, devido ao modo de sobrevivência do mosquito e os diversos fatores relacionados com a sociedade. O objetivo foi aplicar um modelo para identificação de aglomerados espaço-temporais significativos, definindo sua localização, dimensão e ordem. A sistematização da base de dados abrangeu os registros dos focos diários de Ae. aegypti de janeiro de 2009 a setembro de 2018, fornecidos pela Diretoria de Vigilância Epidemiológica de Santa Catarina; que foram georreferenciados com o auxílio do cadastro territorial do município. Para a execução da estatística considerou-se o modelo de probabilidade permutação espaço-temporal, apoiado na abordagem retrospectiva sem e com o uso das co-variáveis uso do solo e precipitação total mensal, e posteriormente na análise prospectiva. Como resultado da pesquisa se verificou a capacidade do procedimento para delimitação de clusters históricos e ativos, sendo que o modo retrospectivo identificou 26 agrupamentos, com o único ativo situado no bairro Boa Vista. Em 35,71% dessas detecções houve influência do uso do solo e em 51,85% dos casos da precipitação total mensal. Por sua vez, a análise prospectiva determinou 7 agrupamentos ativos, sendo a maioria concentrado na região do bairro Boa Vista e sua vizinhança, tornando essa área como prioritária de intervenção. O desenvolvimento do método demonstrou-se eficiente para o conhecimento de clusters históricos e, principalmente para a definição de surtos precoces. Isso caracteriza a estatística Scan como uma ferramenta importante e de baixo custo para orientar a vigilância ambiental nas atividades de controle do inseto.Abstract : The use of epidemiological data associated with the epidemiological study of humans has intensified in the last two decades. In this sense, this dissertation addresses a Kulldorff scan statistic for the detection of spatio-temporal clusters of Aedes aegypti outbreaks in the urban area of Joinville, Santa Catarina. The control this is a large interest for the brasilianities, which did contain strata to infestation, due to the survival of mosquipients and dangerous factors with association. What was applied to the identification of functions clustered by spatio-temporal, defining its location, size and order. The systematization of the database covers the records of the outbreaks Ae. aegypti from January 2009 to September 2018, led by the Office of Epidemiological Surveillance of Santa Catarina; which were georeferenced with the help of the territorial cadastre of the municipality. For the statistical analysis, the temporal-material permeability model was used, based on the retrospective analysis, using the co-variables of soil use and total monthly aggregation, and future prospective data. As a result of the research, there was a procedural capacity for the delimitation of historical and active groups, and the retrospective mode identified 26 clusters, with the only asset located in the Boa Vista neighborhood. In 35.71% of the detections there was influence of soil use and in 51.85% of the cases of total monthly precipitation. On the other hand, a prospective analysis determined 7 active groups, being a greater part of the neighborhood region. The development of the method was efficient for the knowledge of historical clusters and, mainly to definition early outbreaks. This is important as an important and inexpensive tool to guide the environmental activities of insect control

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
