He married Bernice Neves in 1949 before moving to California in 1957. Mendonca moved to Post Falls, Idaho in 1988. Bernice died a few years after the move and Mendonca remarried Patricia Otta. Mendonca dies June 25, 2015

No full textNaszodi and Mendonca (2022) studies educational homogamy in the US and four European countries (France, Hungary, Portugal, Romania). The authors apply two methods for identifying the directly unobservable shifts in marital preferences from one generation to another. Both methods identify changes in preferences through their effects on the share of educationally homogamous couples with a counterfactual decomposition. The first method was developed by Naszodi and Mendonca (2021). It uses only aggregate census data on the equilibrium matching outcome. It is implemented in R, Excel and Visual Basic and can be downloaded from doi:10.17632/x2ry7bcm95.2 (currently available in version 2). The aggregate census data used in the benchmark analysis of the paper by Naszodi and Mendonca (2022) can be downloaded from this site (see: Changing Educational Preferences - ContingencyTables.xls). These data are aggregate census data from IPUMS on the joint educational distributions of young male and female partners/spouses in the studied five countries covering two census waves. The second method was developed in Naszodi and Mendonca (2022) and implemented in R. This method uses dating data. First, it estimates the education level-specific distributions of the reservation points of the marriageable young women and men in the population from data on the distributions of the search criteria (on the education level of the preferred partners) of a sample of dating site users. Then, the method uses the estimated reservation points distributions together with the aggregate Gale-Shapley algorithm and the census data on the joint educational distributions to construct various counterfactuals for the decompositions. The uploaded files allow one to replicate the calculations in the paper by Naszodi and Mendonca (2022) using the reservation points-based second method. A riqueza de espécies da Mata Atlântica continua ameaçada e uma das alternativas para reverter este quadro é propor métodos de utilização racional de seus recursos florestais. Este estudo avaliou aspectos silviculturais e a viabilidade econômica de plantios puros de dez espécies nativas no Espírito Santo. Estas espécies foram plantadas na Reserva Natural Vale em Linhares, com idades entre 21 a 25 anos, sendo elas: Astronium fraxinifolium (gonçalo-alves), Cariniana legalis (jequitibá-rosa), Goniorrhachis marginata (guaribu-amarelo), Kielmeyera albopunctata (nagibe ou pau-santo), Lecythis pisonis (sapucaia-vermelha), Manilkara bella (paraju), Pterygota brasiliensis (farinha-seca), Spondias venulosa (cajá-nativo), Vitex sp. (tarumã) e Zeyheria tuberculosa (ipê-felpudo). O estudo foi subdividido em dois capítulos. O primeiro abordou a avaliação silvicultural voltada para a produção de serrados da madeira utilizando doze fatores de avaliação, entre dados quantitativos e qualitativos, primários e secundários, os quais permitiram gerar um método de classificação e ranqueamento quantitativo das espécies. No segundo, cujo foco foi a avaliação econômica, determinou-se os custos de produção e as receitas advindas da venda da madeira e da possibilidade de venda de sementes e frutos. Posteriormente, procedeu-se a análise de sensibilidade em diferentes cenários de custo da terra, valor da madeira e taxa de juros. A avaliação silvicultural gerou as maiores pontuações para gonçalo-alves (75,8 pontos), sapucaia-vermelha (75 pontos) e jequitibá-rosa (72,9 pontos. O custo total para o estabelecimento de um hectare de floresta foi de R 38.944,80 (guaribu-amarelo) a R 13.030,57 (nagibe) a R 1.008,00 (tarumã) a R$ 310.050,00 (sapucaia-vermelha). Na análise de sensibilidade a taxa de desconto foi o fator de maior influencia na viabilidade dos projetos. Nagibe, farinha-seca e tarumã não tiveram VPL positivo, em nenhum cenário avaliado. A possibilidade de comercialização de sementes e frutos demonstrou ser uma importante alternativa de renda, mesmo em condições de baixa demanda de mercado com destaque para sapucaia-vermelha.

No full textThis is a critical introduction to the educational thought of F. R. Leavis (1895-1978), the greatest English literary critic of the twentieth century, providing the first in-depth examination of Leavis's ideas in relation to contemporary mass higher education. During the course of a long, prolific and controversial academic career, which saw him take issue with figures such as Wittgenstein, T. S. Eliot and C. P. Snow, Leavis became one of the most articulate advocates for the idea of the university as 'a centre of consciousness and human responsibility' in the face of what he saw as the relentless technological drive of civilisation. With the journal Scrutiny which he co-founded, as well as his critical writings, Leavis became a decisive influence on generations of teachers in Britain and overseas. Widely misrepresented as narrowly elitist, his ideas about 'the creative university', with their radical, student-centred approach to teaching, constitute a powerful resource for a higher education system grappling with the contradictory demands of continuity and change.
