Political communication: Meloni and Boldrini under the magnifying glass of italian press

    No full text

Digital intra-party democracy: an exploratory analysis of podemos and the labour party

    No full text
The role of technology is growing in intra-party democracy (IPD) processes. Thisarticle presents a proposal for analysing digital IPD, by applying empirical democratic theory dimensions. To test our methodology, we analyse two different types of parties, a new digital one, Pos, and a traditional one undergoing reform, the Labour Party. Our analysis shows, first, that the application of technology is not neutral, with a differential impact depending on the specific democratic dimension considered and, secondly, that - due to convergent developments - new and established parties are closer in their digital IPD than expected. These results point out the relevance, for the ongoing debate on the quality of IPD, of considering the impact of digital on different democratic dimensions and its evolution over time

Abstract [EN]: The paper offers some insights on the formation of the first Meloni Cabinet at the opening of the 19th legislature of the Italian Republic. Providing a legal-constitutional perspective on institutional practice, the paper will first focus on the developments of the electoral campaign and the outcome of the general election on September 25, 2022. Then, it moves on to a brief review of the features characterizing the formation of the Meloni Cabinet, which witnesses a return to the physiology of parliamentary system. Some considerations are devoted to discussing the rules underpinning the transition phase from one Government to another. Finally, a few notes on recent events and transformations in the Italian political and party context

The new role of the accounting and control function: critical issues and possible solutions

    No full text
The paper aims to help better understand the nature and possible consequences of the evolution of Accounting and Control Function. It is argued that the more apparent symptom of such an evolution is the emergence of a mismatch between the Accounting and Control Function performed by individuals and groups within the organizations to support management actions and those informational and control activities, which are directly supervised and influenced by the Accounting and Control Department . The extent of this mismatch depends on the causal factors that are frequently cited in the literature: the degree of change of the institutional context, the complexity of the business environment and the diffusion of modern ICTs

Expected Shortfall of the Makespan in Interval-Valued Activity Networks

    No full text
This paper deals with the analysis of the Expected Shortfall of the makespan in activity networks when uncertain activity durations are modeled by intervals. More precisely, for each activity only the interval for its integer valued duration is known to the decision maker. In this scenario, we address the evaluation of the Expected Shortfall associated to a feasible schedule discussing its role and importance in decision support systems for planning and scheduling applications. We propose heuristics to determine a fast estimation of the Expected Shortfall. The computational results show that it can be used as optimization criterion for a wide class of planning and scheduling problems while modeling the risk-averse behavior of a decision maker

Digital innovation in electoral campaigns: the case of microcredit in Podemos

    No full text
Crowdfunding and micro-donations for funding political campaigns have been extensively studied, especially in the US. However, digital participatory financing in Europe, with a different regulatory context and relevant public funding, has been investigated less. This article analyses the effects of an innovative and digital-native electoral campaign financing tool: the microcredit. Microcredits consist of small “civil loans” that a political party requests from sympathizers to finance the party's electoral campaign. Based on the case study of the Spanish party Podemos–the first one to implement it–for the period of 2015–2021, we use official data and party documents to explore the consequences of microcredit. We argue, first, that microcredits (and party financing) should be considered another way to differentiate challenger parties from traditional ones. Second, there is a link between the number and amount of microcredits and the political context, not limited to good electoral expectations but also to the polarized political context. Third, microcredits change the structure of campaign funding. Finally, we point out a regulation problem that may deter other parties from adopting this mechanism and present different legal problems (monitoring, data protection, or potential corruption), showing the regulatory issues for adapting to the digitalization of politics.</p

Use of interleukin-2 in the management of haematological malignancies: focus on minimal residual disease. Mandelli F, Capria S, Vignetti M, Meloni G.

Interleukin (IL)-2 is a glycoprotein lymphokine which induces proliferation of all subclasses of T-lymphocytes, natural killer cells and lymphokine activated killer cells, differentiation of cytotoxic cells and secretion of other cytokines, especially interferon-gamma. A fundamental property of IL-2 activated effector cells is to selectively lyse freshly isolated tumour cells. Work carried out on animal tumour models and application in human therapeutics has suggested the potential value of an immunotherapeutic approach in haematological malignancies, especially in the setting of minimal residual disease. Extensive phase I/II trials have been conducted in all haematological diseases, but the most interesting results have been obtained in acute myeloid leukaemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, where the possibility of achieving partial and complete responses in patients with advanced disease has been reported. The feasibility and immunomodulatory effects of IL-2 treatment in patients with minimal residual disease after high-dose chemotherapy have also been explored. However, the heterogeneity of cases treated and administration schedules used does not allow definitive conclusions to be drawn about the true impact of IL-2 treatment on the prognosis of these patients. The clearly encouraging results reported in the literature deserve further investigation from a biological and clinical point of view; until the role of IL-2 in haematological malignancies has been identified, it should be used only in the investigative setting of clinical trials
