A reflection on resilience and inertia as properties of an urban system: Taranto in the ReCity project
Rethinking rules and social practices. The design of urban spaces in the post-Covid-19 lockdown
In the last months a pandemic has changed the daily life of billions of people. Among the efforts to reduce the impact of the disease, social distancing has had huge consequences and raised may concerns, from the inadequacy of contemporary urban design to the social inequality of national and regional lockdown. This paper focuses on the consequences that this experience is having on the design of urban public and private areas. Everybody admits that our cities are going to change but, beside the first quick adaptation to social distancing, it is unclear how to rethink today’s urban areas. We start from our previous work on the classification of architectural rules and on the study of how creativity is expressed via architectural rules, to discuss the principles and social aspects of newly proposed designs. The motivation for this analysis is to investigate and raise awareness of the consequences of changes in social practices: given that we are in need for new structures and service organization, we can still make choices and should balance the positive and negative aspects of these design alternatives. The community should be aware, as much as possible, of the intrinsic forces that novel solutions exert on our social system and urban environment. Typological Axioms for Architecture
Given a space and a set of entities we investigated spatial implications from the point of view of generative and transformational dynamics (analysis and classification, creativity, indexing and memorization, wayfinding, etc.): we want aim to at improvinge intelligent analysis and classification architecture orientated to complexity.
The use of typology and the concept of architectural type, as an abstraction device for analyzing spatial aspects of design processes and outcomes, is a way for coping with problems of complexity in understanding spatial entities and processes (Petruccioli, 2008)
Abstraction via typology can be used in architectural design as a preliminary ontological filter for axiomatic routines of standard ontological analyzers: it calls for a specific extension of the set of axioms. Ontological analysis and classification of complex spatial forms and relations raises problems of meaningfulness and completeness of the set of logical axioms usually used in standard ontological devices (Bhatt, 2011)
Towards an ontology-based framework to store and recover memories for creative architectural projects
Knowledge of places: An ontological analysis of places and their semantic stratifications
Talking about place, we make a sort of addition to physical space, as a place is an interpreted space. This paper tries to interpret places through place perception, by looking at the work of artists and other spatial agents. Geographical places offer a good stance in dealing with complex spatial environments using different paradigms. Ontologies seem to be useful in this sense, to look at place cognition with an analytical and organizational aim in complex spatial environments, for decision-support purposes.
The final rationale of this paper is twofold. On one hand, ontological levels are useful for complexity modelling aims: yet they are still informative, and our understanding of space cannot be reduced to these ontological elements per se. Therefore, deeper studies and research are needed to develop formal frameworks for modelling purposes
About non-knowledge in Knowledge management for planning: Towards an applied ontological approach
This work contains reflections on the awareness of how the lack of knowledge and the unknown are important elements to consider during any territorial and environmental planning process. The unknown can affect dramatically the effectiveness of choices and start a chain of unpredictable consequences. The awareness of such issues emerged dramatically with the recent pandemic. Plans often deal with policy decisions, planning decisions that interest collectivity, human and non-human beings, our space, our territories and our time (or portions of time). Such plans (either for households or a city or a region) have to cope with unexpected events, uncertainties, with unwanted consequences. After an exploration of some theoretical aspects of knowledge and non-knowledge, we argue about the extent to which ontologies can be a useful conceptual approach to deal with the lack of knowledge and the unknown in planning
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Modelling the knowledge of urban complexity: The role of ontologies in spatial design tasks
The interest of the present research is focused on knowledge mechanisms in
the spatial domain. Given a space and a set of entities the goal is
understanding the structure of intelligent analysis and classification of
architectural design outcomes in terms of complexity: see an architectagent's
ability of detecting continuous/non-continuous design items within
a spatial set contingent on the needs of the agent.
Adopting a cognitive approach, we analyse the design process in
architecture and ponder about cognitive processes applied to the space-andproject
nexus, in order to understand the role that creativity plays in the
design process and the way in which variations and constraints in it shape
creativity during the development of any architectural project.
The design process in architecture can resort to ‘typology’ and ‘types’ of
artificially built spatial entities which conform themselves to complex
functional historical social determinants in a non-deterministic process
(change, creativity, convenience, etc.): typology and types are abstractions
built on systems of mutual relationships among context components, the use
of which as supports in computer-based ontological analysis and
classification calls for specific sets of axioms (Bhatt et al., 2009; Guarino et
al., 2002)
