No full textThe social impact assessment is an activity of social research and an assessment practice that has received an increasing spread. Burgeoned from the environmental impact assessment method, its early formulations aim to anticipate and mitigate the adverse social impacts of a proposed intervention, whilst also contributing to strengthening positive ones. Since the first applications, different versions of social impact assessment have been proposed, depending on the unit of analysis and the purposes of the evaluation. The article offers two reading tracks: the social impact assessments applied to programs, policies and reforms; and impact assessments applied to social enterprises and social investments. The article concludes with some notes on the contribution of social impact assessment to make a step further to reach the most relevant evaluation purposes and some cautions to consider in the development of these methods

No full textCovid-19 has been imposing a stress-test of extraordinary proportions on
public administrations and their administrative capacity. This article will both
address the main challenges, external and internal (organizational), that
public administrations are facing during the pandemic, and by doing so, it
will analyse administrative performance in light of the difficulties faced. This
article proposes four different types of performance evaluation, not mutually
exclusive, combining innovative/conservative management with
stable/unstable context. If used proactively, performance evaluation can
contribute to strengthen the administrative capacity, meant as the ability to
analyse and interpret changes in the policy context, to face people’s needs in
response to a crisis. Finally, this article proposes a checklist aimed at
adapting performance evaluation to uncertainty and supporting burgeoning
innovation processes

Get PDFNatural killer cells play a key role in the defence of organisms against virus infections and in the control of tumor onset. Interleukin-2 is a multifunctional inflammatory cytokine able to activate natural killer cells, essentially inducing cell proliferation, lymphokine-activated-killer cell generation and cytokine production. Here we discuss some signaling events generated by interleukin-2 in the cell nucleus of primary human natural killer cells, specifically focusing on the lipid signal transduction and the induction of the cyclic adenosine-5'-monophosphate response element binding protein transcription factor. The implications of these nuclear events in the response of natural killer cells to interleukin-2 are also discussed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
