Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Get PDFThe article contains an overview of the evolution of Ukraine-NATO relations from the beginning of our state’s independence to the present. The author made an attempt to identify and characterize the main periods of the formation of Ukraine-NATO relations, to identify the key problems of partnership development. It is noted that at the beginning of independence, Ukraine chose a neutral and non-aligned status, and then declared multi-vectorism as the basis of foreign security policy, which was a historically determined necessity in the transition period. At that time, Ukraine remained in the field of interests of Russia, which sought to restore its position in the post-Soviet space, and therefore did not have the opportunity to fully integrate into the Euro-Atlantic structures.
Due to the difficult geopolitical situation, Ukraine was forced to maneuver between the East and the West in order to establish itself in the international field and take its place in the European security architecture. In the 1990s, Ukraine-NATO relations developed quite briskly, but not enough for Ukraine to become a NATO member. However, Ukraine managed to gain the status of a special partner, which subsequently contributed to the deepening of bilateral relations.
In the 2000s, Ukraine-NATO relations first intensified, and after Yanukovych came to power, Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration was suspended. The situation changed after the Revolution of Dignity, when pro-European democratic forces came to power. Further policy is aimed at deepening Ukraine’s relations with the Alliance. Ukraine has finally decided on its course, but the necessary conditions must be met for successful integration. Also, for its part, NATO should conduct a more targeted policy regardless of Russia, which is not as strong as it has created an image of itself through propaganda. Ukraine receives the undisputed support of the Alliance, but, unfortunately, this is not enough to end the war and restore territorial integrity. Ukraine’s accession to NATO would guarantee Ukraine’s security on the one hand, and strengthen the Alliance’s values on the other. Therefore, NATO needs more determination in Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.Стаття містить огляд еволюції відносин Україна-НАТО від початку незалежності нашої держави до сьогодення. Авторка зробила спробу визначити та охарактеризувати основні періоди формування відносин Україна-НАТО, означити ключові проблеми розвитку партнерства. Констатується, що на початку незалежності, Україна обрала нейтральний та позаблоковий статус, а далі задекларувала багатовекторність як основу зовнішньої безпекової політики, що була історично обумовленою необхідністю у перехідний період. Водночас Україна залишалася в полі інтересів Росії, яка прагнула відновити свої позиції на пострадянському просторі, а тому не мала можливості повноцінно інтегруватися до євроатлантичних структур.
Через складне геополітичне становище Україна була змушена маневрувати між Сходом і Заходом щоб утвердитися в міжнародному полі та зайняти своє місце в європейській архітектурі безпеки. В 1990-і рр. відносини Україна-НАТО розвивалися досить жваво, але не достатньо для того, щоб Україна стала членом НАТО. Однак, Україна спромоглася здобути статус особливого партнера, що у подальшому сприяло поглибленню двосторонніх відносин.
У 2000-х рр. спочатку відбулася активізація відносин Україна-НАТО, а з приходом до влади В. Януковича Євроатлантичну інтеграцію України було призупинено. Ситуація змінилася після Революції Гідності, коли до влади прийшли демократичні проєвропейські сили. Подальша політика спрямована на поглиблення відносин України з Альянсом. Україна остаточно визначилася зі своїм курсом, однак для успішної інтеграції потрібно виконати необхідні умови. Також зі свого боку НАТО має проводити більш цілеспрямовану політику не зважаючи на Росію, яка не є такою сильною, як створила про себе образ шляхом пропаганди. Україна отримує беззаперечну підтримку Альянсу, але, на жаль, цього не достатньо для припинення війни та відновлення територіальної цілісності. Вступ України до НАТО гарантував би з одного боку безпеку України, а з іншого укріпив цінності Альянсу. Тому НАТО потрібно більше рішучості у приєднанні України до Альянсу

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
