No full textNonrigid external fixation of a joint is designed to restrict abnormal joint movement and facilitate healing of traumatized ligaments and capsule tissue with minimizing the impact of immobilization on articular homeostasis and cartilage metabolism. Weight bearing and joint motion minimize muscle atrophy and loss of bone mineral and allow controlled loading of the ligaments, thereby improving their strength and functionality. He criticizes ils method and reproaches Zeev Sternhell for having constructed a « hypothetical » Mounier and not wanting to take into account either Mounier's firm anti-totalitarian texts, nor the exact scope of his criticism of parliamentary democracy, nor the prophetie attitude (perhaps somewhat uncautious, but brave and uncompromising on essentials) of the director of Esprit.L'auteur répond ici à l'article de Zeev Sternhell, « Emmanuel Mounier et la contestation de la démocratie libérale dans la France des années trente » (Revue française de science politique, 34 (6), décembre 1984, p. 1141-1180). Hyaluronic acid and chondrogenesis of murine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in chitosan sponges
No full textObjective—To establish the dose-dependent effects of high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (HA) supplementation on chondrogenesis by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured on chitosan sponges and to determine the extent to which MSC matrix production (chondrogenesis) can be influenced by incorporation of high-molecular-weight HA into chitosan scaffolds.
Sample Population—Murine MSCs derived from a multipotent bone marrow stromal precursor.
Procedures—MSCs were seeded on chitosan and chitosan-HA scaffolds in chondrogenic medium with various HA concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy (viability assay), and DNA quantification were used to assess cell attachment, distribution, and viability 48 hours after seeding. Constructs were cultured for 3 weeks prior to evaluation of cell distribution and chondrogenic differentiation via histologic evaluation and quantification of DNA, glycosaminoglycan, and collagen II.
Results—48 hours after MSC seeding, cell viability and DNA content were similar among groups. Three weeks after seeding, HA supplementation of the culture medium improved matrix production in a dose-dependent manner, as indicated by matrix glycosaminoglycan and collagen II concentrations. The scaffold composition, however, had no significant effect on matrix production.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—High-molecular-weight HA supplementation in culture medium had a dose-dependent effect on matrix production and thus chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs cultured on chitosan sponges. The addition of HA in the surrounding fluid during chondrogenesis should improve cartilage production and may be useful for producing engineered cartilage tissues
Experiencia lingüística y desarrollo cognitivo: Las ventajas del bilingüísmo
No full textThis article maintains the hypothesis of a positive correlation between intelligence and
bilingualism due to the presence of cognitive advantages. The author reviews some studies with
bilingual children -particularly Okoh in 1980-, stating that these works of research show the presence
of cognitive advantages in verbal creativity tasks. In relation with the influence of bilingual
experience in other cognitive experiences, the author explains some difficulties to link them, which
means that more previous work should be made if we want to extract some definitive conclusions
about the dimensions of cognitive development that may benefit from bilingualism. Speaking about
the mechanisms through which this influence is produced, the author highlights the structural
explanation of Ben-Zeev (1977), including the Chomskian concept of linguistical competence. After
deepening in Cummins� model (1981), with its analysis of different types of competence and the
�threshold hypothesis�, the author focuses finally on the cognitive effects of different types of
bilingualism.En este artículo se mantiene la hipótesis de la correlación positiva entre inteligencia y
bilingüismo, debida a la existencia de ventajas cognitivas. La autora repasa algunos estudios con
niños bilingües -destacando el de Okoh (1980)-, afirmando que estas investigaciones indican la
presencia de ventajas cognitivas en tareas de creatividad verbal. Con relación a la influencia de la
experiencia bilingüe en otras operaciones cognitivas, explica algunas dificultades para relacionar
ambas, por lo que habría que realizar un considerable trabajo previo para poder extraer conclusiones
definitivas sobre las dimensiones del desarrollo cognitivo que pueden beneficiarse. Respecto a los
mecanismos a través de los que se produce dicha influencia, resalta la explicación estructural de Ben-
Zeev (1977) recogiendo el concepto de competencia lingüística chomskyano. Tras profundizar en el
modelo de Cummins (1981), con su análisis de los distintos tipos de competencia y la �hipótesis de

Spatial modulation of light transmission through a single microcavity by coupling of photosynthetic complex excitations to surface plasmons
Get PDFabstract: Molecule-plasmon interactions have been shown to have a definite role in light propagation through optical microcavities due to strong coupling between molecular excitations and surface plasmons. This coupling can lead to macroscopic extended coherent states exhibiting increment in temporal and spatial coherency and a large Rabi splitting. Here, we demonstrate spatial modulation of light transmission through a single microcavity patterned on a freestanding Au film, strongly coupled to one of the most efficient energy transfer photosynthetic proteins in nature, photosystem I. Here we observe a clear correlation between the appearance of spatial modulation of light and molecular photon absorption, accompanied by a 13-fold enhancement in light transmission and the emergence of a distinct electromagnetic standing wave pattern in the cavity. Text Classification Using a Novel Time Series based Methodology
No full textAbstractThis paper discusses a novel time series methodology for writing process modeling, taking into account the dependency between sequentially written text parts. A series of consecutive sub-documents of a given document are represented via histograms of the appropriately chosen terms. To characterize the document overall style and its fluctuations, a new feature named the Mean Dependence is introduced. This similarity measure quantifies the association between a current sub-document and numerous earlier composed ones. So, such a collection of sub-documents is represented as a time series of the Mean Dependence development. The series change points naturally link to the style changes. Two possible approaches constructed within the general methodology are discussed. The first one intended to study media sources, is constructed to detect change points of media associated with social life transformations. Consequently, the homogeneous periods are detected using a new distance based on the Mean Dependence. The proposed methodology is applied to analysis of editorial texts published in the Egyptian “Al-Ahraam” and succeeds to indicate several important events connected to the “Arab Spring”. The second approach, based on the strictly stationary model of time series, is applied to authorship verification. Numerical experiments demonstrate high ability of the proposed methods to recognize an authorship and to expose writing style evolution

In the following discussion, the author studies a short poem (Ahabtikha: "I Have Loved You") from Ibn Gabirol’s classic philosophy work Fons Vitae, and he tries to clarify some of the poem's enigmas. The poem does relate to the teachings of the Fons Vitae, but does so in a nonphilosophic manner, making no use of philosophic terminology or argument
