Reinwardtia 14(2): 317 - 322. -- Pulau Mursala is a small island west of the Sibolga, Tapanuli Tengah District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The occurrence of the genus Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) there has never been reported before. However, during a visit in April 2013 three populations are located close together with more than twenty buds and some rotting blooming flowers, Tetrastigma sp. was detected. Field observations could be made and material was collected for comparison with that in the Herbarium Bogoriense (BO). It was concluded that they are R. gadutensis Meijer, which is known from Padang, Ulu Gadut. Notes on its morphology are given. The distribution of species is discussed

Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Consequences of cooperativity in supramolecular polymers
No full textN,N',N"-Trialkylbenzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides (BTAs) self-assemble by means of strong, threefold intermolecular hydrogen bonding into well-defined, helical, one-dimensional columnar aggregates.1 When a stereogenic centre is introduced into the alkyl side chains of these BTA molecules, strong Cotton effects are observed in dilute apolar solutions, indicating the preference for one helical conformation over the other.2 A helical sense preference can also be created by the introduction of isotope chirality into the a-position of the alkyl side chains in BTA molecules. Quantitative analysis on the observed process in dodecane demonstrates that a stereoselectively deuterated BTA forms right- (P) and left-handed (M) helical supramolecular polymers with a slight difference in stability upon cooling and the diastereomeric excess (d.e. = ([M]-[P])/([M]+[P])) is 38% at room temperature3. The subtle character of these deuterated-BTA-based supramolecular polymers makes it a highly sensitive probe to investigate the effect of the molecular structure of the alkane solvent in the self-assembly processes4. Furthermore, the effect of adding a racemization reaction into a self-assembly process by using a BTA molecule with a labile stereocenter was investigated. Racemization reaction in a self-assembling BTA system follows nonfirst-order reaction kinetics. Enantioenriched BTA molecules are obtained from a racemizing solution in the presence of a sergeant molecule which is unreactive towards base. The results are further analyzed by using a theoretical model which is capable of precise quantitative description of the experimental data obtained. The calculations are fully confirmed by experimental data with even the smallest details being fully explained by the methodology employed4. This dissertation focuses on the self-assembly process of BTA molecules and investigates the effect of isotope substitution, alkane solvent employed for self-assembly process and the introduction of racemization reaction into the self-assembly process. 1. Comentarios críticos sobre el libro Animal languages, de Eva Meijer
No full textThis paper provides with a critical analysis of the book Animal languages, written by the Dutch philosopher Eva Meijer. The author aims at showing that non-human animals do have complex cognitive and communicative skills; however, her strategy links the aforementioned communicative complexity to the linguistic nature of animal communicative systems. Beyond arguing that animals are endowed with language (a quite common claim by ethologists), the book leaves much to be desired from a scientific point of view. The paper will show that Meijer’s book is full of contradictions, exaggerations, bizarre or baseless claims, distortions of other authors’ assertions, mistakes in the use of bibliographical references or serious ignorance of a number of aspects.Este trabajo efectúa un análisis crítico del libro Animal languages, escrito por la filósofa holandesa Eva Meijer. La intención de la autora es mostrar que los animales tienen destrezas cognitivas y comunicativas complejas, pero su estrategia vincula esa complejidad comunicativa con el carácter lingüístico de los códigos comunicativos animales. Más allá de sostener que los animales tienen lenguaje (algo frecuente en etólogos), la obra deja mucho que desear desde la óptica científica. El trabajo mostrará que el libro de Meijer está repleto de contradicciones, exageraciones, afirmaciones extravagantes o infundadas, tergiversaciones de la opinión de otros autores, errores en el uso de referencias bibliográficas o desconocimientos muy graves de diferentes aspectos
