Bird species richness and diversity at montane Important Bird Area (IBA) sites in south-eastern Nigeria

    No full text
The mountains of south-eastern Nigeria are a western extension of the Cameroon mountain range, which is classified as an endemic bird area (EBA). Unlike its eastern extension in Cameroon, most of the ornithological surveys in the western extension of the Cameroon highlands in Nigeria have produced only limited checklists and inventories. There is a clear need for quantitative baseline data so that conservation problems can be identified. Twenty line transects covering a total transect length of 28.8 km were used to survey five sites (Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, Oban and Okwangwo Division of Cross River National Park, Sankwala Mountains and Mbe Mountains) in the westernmost extension of the Cameroon Mountains EBA in south western Nigeria. Vegetation measurements were taken to control for the potential confounding effect of variation in vegetation density and structure on detectability of birds between sites. The 193 bird species recorded in Afi, 158 in Sankwala, 124 in Oban, 100 in Mbe and 73 in Okwangwo Division included most of the Cameroon highlands restricted range species. The results show that the mountains of south-eastern Nigeria are important parts of the Cameroon EBA, particularly the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. However these sites are threatened by fire and livestock grazing on the hilltops, shifting agriculture on the hillsides and lowlands, and logging for timber in some parts, as well as wildlife hunting for bush meat.Peer reviewe

Representaciones transtextuales y heterolingües (para la memoria) en la novela Manu militari

    No full text
This paper analyzes how the narrative of Memory appears in the Basque novel Manu militari (Arrieta, 1987), where the story of a young generation in its passing from Franco’s dictatorship to post-Francoism era is told. We describe the evolution-features of the field of Basque literature and translation during 1975-1990, as for it has shaped the habitus of the author and it has been reflected in fiction. We analyze the narrative procedures used to remember the memorial past: the transtextuality and the heterolinguism. The study is based on the Bourdieusian theory of fields, Genette’s theory of transtextuality, research trends in Translation Studies (the fictional turn) and approaches on multilingualism (Suchet’s Heterolinguistic Imaginary)

Manu Samriti Chander\u27s Brown Romantics: Poetry and Nationalism in the Global Nineteenth Century

    No full text
The last decade has witnessed increasing critical interest in questions of race, nation, and empire during the Romantic era. Manu Samriti Chander\u27s Brown Romantics: Poetry and Nationalism in the Global Nineteenth Century contributes to this discussion by examining the extensive international impact of Romantic poetry on writers beyond Britain. Part of Bucknell University Press\u27s Transits: Literature, Thought, and Culture series, his work provides a fascinating and unique perspective on global literary relations. He demonstrates how Henry Derozio of India, Egbert Martin of British Guiana, and Henry Lawson of Australia adopted the role of the Romantic author to shape nationalist movements in their countries and mediate their colonial relationship with England. By reading British writers in relation to those of other nations, Brown Romantics questions the privileging of a Eurocentric canon and challenges us to widen our definition of ‘Romantic’ literature

Dynamic datarace detection for object-oriented programs

Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 63-66).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Multithreaded shared-memory programs are susceptible to dataraces, bugs that may exhibit themselves only in rare circumstances and can have detrimental effects on program behavior. Dataraces are often difficult to debug because they are difficult to reproduce and can affect program behavior in subtle ways, so tools which aid in detecting and preventing dataraces can be invaluable. Past dynamic datarace detection tools either incurred large overhead, ranging from 3x to 30x, or sacrificed precision in reducing overhead, reporting many false errors. This thesis presents a novel approach to efficient and precise datarace detection for multithreaded object-oriented programs. Our runtime datarace detector incurs an overhead ranging from 13% to 42% for our test suite, well below the overheads reported in previous work. Furthermore, our precise approach reveals dangerous dataraces in real programs with few spurious warnings.by Manu Sridharan.M.Eng

Insectageddon: is global insect extinction real?

    No full text
News headlines in recent years have proclaimed that over 40% of all insect species are in decline, and many approach extinction. But are these numbers correct? Is the reality better, or even much worse, than we think? Entomologist, broadcaster, and author Professor Adam Hart leads a panel debate of international insect experts to discuss these headlines, crunch the numbers and analyse the fact and fiction behind global insect extinction. Join Adam alongside National Museums Scotland entomology collection curator Ashleigh Whiffin, insect decline ecologist Dr Manu Saunders, and biodiversity specialist Dr Nick Isaac to find out the latest on this contentious and vital issue and ask your questions to the panel. Organised by the British Ecological Society in association with the Royal Entomological Society for celebrating ‘Insect Week
