University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. August 2012. Major: Ecology, Evolution and Behavior. Advisor: Dr. James B. Cotner. 1 computer file (PDF); viii, 89 pages.Approximately one half of terrestrial carbon runoff is processed by inland waters and released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2) prior to reaching the oceans, and bacterial consumption of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) comprises a dominant proportion of this carbon loss. Though peatlands export more DOC per area than most other ecosystems, the sources and biodegradability of peatland DOC and their effects on downstream DOC loads and fluxes are poorly understood. Moreover, photochemical degradation plays an important role in the loss of carbon from aquatic ecosystems, especially in peatlands with high DOC concentrations rich in photochemically reactive humic and phenolic compounds, but its contribution to global CO2 evasion from inland waters has not been quantified. This dissertation focuses on predictors of biodegradable DOC (BDOC) in aquatic ecosystems, the sources and biodegradability of DOC in peatland watersheds, and the contribution of photochemical degradation of DOC to global CO2 evasion from peatlands and fluvial ecosystems. Key findings from these studies were that SUVA, a measurement broadly used in ecology and environmental engineering and fairly simple to obtain, is an excellent predictor of the amount of long-term BDOC concentrations in Minnesota lake ecosystems. The peatland bog may be the most important source of BDOC exported from peatlands annually, rather than the upland. And, photochemical enhancement of bacterial respiration in peatland and fluvial ecosystems contributes approximately 0.11-0.22 Pg C yr-1 to the total global CO2 evasion from inland waters (~1.4 Pg C yr-1), or 9-18% of all inland water CO2 evasion. The results from this dissertation will lend insight into how future changes in hydrology and surface water DOC concentrations will alter the sources, biodegradability, and photochemical enhancement of DOC in aquatic ecosystems in the northern hemisphere, especially peatlands.Jacobson, Meghan McCarthy Funke. The Bachelor thesis deals with the lives and works of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke, the pioneers of the Czech abstract photography. The introduction of thesis is dedicated to a photography medium and an abstract photography phenomenon. The next part describes both the Czech and international contemporary photographic scene. The stress is put on abstract photography creation. Then the main focus of thesis, i.e. the study dealing with lives and works of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke follows. A special attention is paid to their abstract creation where both photographers counted among pioneers. The following chapter includes the comparison of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke works. Finally, a summary of personalities and abstract works of both avant-garde photographers is made. The thesis also contains a pictorial supplement. The existing monographs and collections of works always concern each author individually. The author of Bachelor thesis has therefore tried to compare the works and fortunes of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke in mutual connections and put the creation of both photographers both into national and international context

Religious Dimension of German “Unending Book” in the Children’s Fantasy by Cornelia Funke

    No full text
This article examines a fantasy genre in the work of Cornelia Funke against the background of Protestantism and “Als ob” (“as if”) philosophy. Alongside, it also explores fantastic Romantic novels written by modern German authors (M. Gläser, K. Gier, K. Mayer, and V. Moers) that champion the cult of literature and writing. The essay thus attempts to systematize the features of German identity as revealed through representation of childhood and the national specificity of fictional art. The symbol of “an unending book” as a way of reconstructing the world is at the very basis of German culture and is endowed with religious meanings, from Novalis to M. Ende and more recently to C. Funke. In The Thief Lord (Herr der Diebe), a novel full of references to E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Princess Brambilla, F. Pforr’s and F. Overbek’s paintings, Funke seeks to combine German love of dreaming with poeticized Italian joyfulness and love of life. For example, the novel’s characters discover a magical carousel on the Isle of Mysteries and set off on an existential journey. In the course of this journey, they try to recognize themselves “in other clothes that seem to belong to the past,” in a fashion similar to Heinrich von Ofterdingen. In the Inkheart trilogy (Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath), the author underscores the vernicle nature of verbal reality and its power over human existence; she also touches upon the problem of the author and her literary gift. According to Funke, a human being should certainly correspond to his or her higher destination and be directed by the inner moral law. However, it is words, like prayers in late Kant, that transform and create the universe

On female knights : the (re)creation of the medieval in Cornelia Funke

In the context of children's and young adult literature in contemporary German language, Cornelia Funke's production stands out. Born in Dorsten in 1958, the author - or, more specifically, the storyteller (Erzählerin), as she likes to be called -, brings together in the texts her ability as an illustrator. Since the worldwide success of the Tintenherz (Inkheart) trilogy, Funke became a successful figure in the children’s and young adult universe. In most of her works there is the latent presence of the Western imaginary about the Middle Ages. However, that is a reception of the Middle Ages, either through the (re)creation of images or the (re)structuring of themes from the courtly universe. The article here proposed analyzes three works of Funke, namely Die geraubten Prinzen (1994), Igraine ohne Furcht (1998) and Der geheimnisvolle Ritter Namenlos (2001), taking as a starting point interviews of the author herself about this theme; in other words, it is the relationship between fact and fiction which will be considered. By focusing on the issue of the reinterpretation of the Middle Ages, this paper seeks to understand the reframing of the Middle Ages both through recreated images and the insertion of a new kind of hero, female protagonists

Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2007.At present there is an extreme shortage in the publication of Afrikaans children’s books. Although revised publications of popular, classic series, such as the Maasdorp-, Trompie- and Saartjie-series can help fill the void in the market, the contribution made by translations of children’s books should not be underestimated: Afrikaans translations of popular children’s books, such as the Harry Potter- and Narnia-series are well-liked and can even encourage young readers to develop an Afrikaans reading culture. Young readers throughout the world get pleasure from the books written by the renowned German author Cornelia Funke. Funke is viewed as an influential author of children’s books and this is largely due to her popular fantasy-adventure Tintenherz; the extremely original plot of this fantasy-adventure, which forms part of a trilogy, persuades young readers to change their unenthusiastic approach towards reading by showing them that reading can be a pleasant, thrilling experience. This study attempts to prove that an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz can make an important contribution to fill the void in the Afrikaans children’s literature, as well as encourage young readers to read more. Critics fear that translations of popular children’s books might flood the market with books that might be cheaper, but that are second-rate versions of the original texts since the translations fail to achieve the same literary standards as the original texts. This study attempts to prove that knowledge of theoretical translation strategies, such as George Steiner’s hermeneutic motion, Lawrence Venuti’s approaches of foreignisation and domestication, as well as André Levere’s approach of rewrite as a form of translation do in fact make it possible to produce an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz which not only meets the requirements of the target-culture and satisfies the wants of the target-readers, but also upholds the literary standard of the original German text.Master

This paper reports an attempt to implement financial factors into a neoclassical model of optimal factor demand. The theoretical shows that factor demand decisions of firms operating under monopolistic competition or with decreasing returns to scale are affected by financial restrictions. The theoretical model is estimated using West German firm data from 1987 to 1994. Keywords: Financial Restrictions, Labour Demand, Panel Data JEL classification: J23, C33 Corresponding author. Funke Osae-Brown - ORCID: 0009-0008-6070-9018 https://orcid.org/0009-0008-6070-9018This paper examines how the creative power of storytelling through documentary film can contribute to the debate around racism and racial discrimination in Scottish Higher Education using the qualitative approach of filmed interviews with Nigerian migrants studying and working at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Using Critical Race Theory for data analysis, I argue that storytelling provides insights into the lived experiences of Nigerian migrants in Scotland at Scottish HEIs. The data collected for this study shows that they are not being supported or heard enough in schools based on their experiences of racism and racial discrimination and the Equality Act 2010 does not offer adequate protection for them. The author(s) received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.https://doi.org/10.1177/27526461251314893pubpu
