The paper opens the discussion on the contemporaneity of the Internet in human life. Today our lives online are not something separate from our lives offline: both are an inherent part of our existence. The Author analyzed the identity and presentation of self in cyberspace from Twitter to Second Life (SL) contexts in terms of: expressions given; embellishment as a minor form of persona adoption; dividing the self; conforming and ‘fitting in’; and masking, anonymity and pseudonimity.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. This essay takes into consideration some of the literary intertexts of the medieval fairy tale-like poem 'Asinarius' in order to arrive at a comic-parodic reading. Among these are Simon Aurea Capra's 'Ylias', Vergil's 'Aeneid', Nigel of Longchamp's 'Speculum stultorum'', as well as a series of textual and iconographic variations on the proverbial theme of the 'ass and the lyre'

As soon as "data" turn into "big data", analysis by "close reading" can become a problem: It can become an endless process that eventually the brain of the researcher can no longer get a grip on. Methods of computational humanities can partially solve the problem: Various tools can be used to make quantitative analyses of large amounts of text, for example in the field of ethnology or folklore. Various tools may be considered for such text analysis. For example, the program AntConc can be used to study word frequencies, as well as the distribution of concepts across the text. LIWC2015 can be used for sentiment analysis of life stories and show differences between genders (or generations) in telling life stories. Stylo may be used for the stylometric analysis of texts. The usefulness of such programs is tested here on a still relatively small corpus of so-called Life Books. The Life Books ("Levensboek") is a project of Humanitas Foundation in Netherlands to publish limited edition booklets of life stories compiled from interviews with older people, recorded and edited by volunteers. This study is based on 19 digital Life Books - in fact still small enough for close reading and qualitative analysis. However, the intention here is to use the corpus as a pilot to see how valuable the tools can be for a much larger amount of texts that will be added in the near future. In this pilot I want to see to what extent the Life Books can be used for structural analysis, gender differences in narrative style and subject choice, sentiment analysis, recurring themes, distribution of motifs, and perhaps most importantly: Thematic gaps. That is to say: Which (important) issues are not raised by the storytellers? The experiment shows that it is possible to do research into narrative structures, although this could be much more refined in terms of events. Stylometric analysis with Stylo of male and female repertoires is rather tricky, because interviewers/editors can (very much) interfere as a filter here. Stylo looks for patterns in the use of function words to determine different styles, but Life Books are just not quoting narrators literally all the time, so in quite some cases linguistical features, like the use of function words, may not originate from the storytellers but from the editors. On the other hand, sentiment analysis in combination with gender, for example, is possible using LIWC2015: This tool can give a fair respresentation of emotions, relationships and related motifs in life stories. Furthermore, AntConc proves to be a useful tool to investigate the occurrence and distribution of themes and topics. Research into the lack of certain themes and motifs remains an interesting option as well

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

In this fascinating book Meder explains how stories can grow into irrefutable exempla of truth. Gradually, they can become the building blocks of a belief system, and determine people's conduct and worldview. All the elementary questions are dealt with from different perspectives: who makes the crop circles? What do the farmers think of them? How are the crop circles made and to what purpose? What positions do journalists take? Are there any messages to be found in crop circles, and if so, how can they be decoded? What kind of research do the cereologists perform in the field? If people believe in supernatural or extraterrestrial interference, what else do they believe in? Why do the croppies and cereologists think they are right, and what arguments do sceptics have to think them wrong? The author draws comparisons between the phenomenon in Britain and the Netherlands. The book also contains a brief survey into the acclaimed ancient history of crop circles. Although it is not the objective of the book to determine the absolute truth about crop circles, in the end the readers will be provided with all the pros and cons in the debate to make up their own mind

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

THE NIGERIAN SCAM 2.0 How an improved online scam trick made an unsuspecting Dutch man over 20,000 euros poorer

This paper studies a case of Nigerian scam experienced first-hand by its author. On Tuesday July 10, 2018 I received a friend request on Facebook from someone called Robert Batterman, apparently an elderly London lawyer. I didn’t know the man, but I saw that Batterman was also a friend of two of my trusted Dutch Facebook friends at the time, so it seemed fine and I accepted the friend request. Later, I was sent another message via Messenger from this Batterman in Dutch talking about “something important to discuss with you”. A Dutch Facebook friend got a similar message, but this time about “the late Alain Schaap”. We both realized that this must be a Nigerian Scam. I decided to find out some more about this British lawyer and posted a warning about this scam on the Internet the next day. Three weeks later I received an e-mail from a Dutch man who told me he saw the warning a little too late. He had already lost a considerable amount of money and was prepared to tell me what happened

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
