The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD)

    No full text
The ALICE silicon pixel detector (SPD) consists of two layers in the barrel region at small radius (4cm and 7cm, respectively). The main requirements are summarised. The design considerations and development status are reviewed

Evaluation of Radiation Dose Exposure for Silicon Pixel Detectors in ALICE Experiment

    No full text
An estimation of radiation dose exposure expected for the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of ALICE experiment at the future LHC collider is presented. In particular, the two innermost layers of the silicon ITS, located at radial distances of 3.9 and 7.6cm are based on hybrid silicon pixel detectors. A possible scenario for the first ten years operation is presented assuming a data taking with beams of lead, calcium and proton

Integrated modeling of surface water and groundwater interactions in the Eastern Mitidja Plain, North Algeria: investigating the impact of human activities and climate change

    No full text
The study aims to investigate surface water (SW)-groundwater (GW) interactions in the Mitidja Plain (northern Algeria), taking into account the impacts of human activity and climate change emphasizing the alignment with Sustainable Development Goals, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Climate Action. The dynamic interactions between the El Hamiz River and the alluvial aquifer were studied using MODFLOW 6. A typical scenario analysis approach was employed, considering historical and projected climate conditions based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 5 and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 models, as well as current and projected GW abstraction rates. The findings reveal substantial changes in flow dynamics over time. In 1982, the aquifer refilled the river at a rate of 2.59 m(3)/s. In 2019, a new state was observed where the opposite occurred the river recharged the aquifer at a rate of 0.73 m(3)/s. This reduction in the flow rate can be attributed to over-pumping and declining recharge rates, and this pattern is anticipated to persist in the future. Furthermore, future forecasts indicate that GW overuse has a greater impact on GW dynamics compared to climate change. However, the adoption of saltwater desalination and enhanced irrigation methods could make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of GW resources, with an increase of up to approximately 14 m

Electrical Tomography for the Monitoring of Water Moisture in Painted Walls and Ceilings

    No full text
Painted walls represent a great heritage of cultural and artistic value. Unfortunately, these works of art, especially the frescos, are constantly attacked by moisture and salt content in the wall plaster, thus, particular attention has to be paid on their conservation state. Nevertheless, there are no many instruments that permit to detect the wall state without causing damages to the paintings. For these reasons, a non-invasive measuring system, which is based on resistivity measurements, is proposed to investigate the moisture content in painted walls and ceilings. The method is able to provide information not only at the wall surface but also at few centimeters beneath the painting, thus allowing one to detect dangerous situations before the deteriorating effects take place. Despite the attention has been focused on the conservation of work of arts, the proposed system can be employed in many other fields including the building sector in genera

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Also By The Same Author: AKTiveAuthor, a Citation Graph Approach to Name Disambiguation

    No full text
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters
