The aim of the study is to explore the views of information professionals for knowledge management (KM) in the libraries/information institutions of Bangladesh. Research Questions-This paper seeks to address the following research questions: How the information professionals of Bangladesh perceive the views of KM? What are likely to be the skills required by the information professionals of Bangladesh for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh? and what are likely to be the critical success factors for encouraging KM in the information institutions of Bangladesh? The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The study has been conducted through a survey using a pre-structured questionnaire. A short and structured questionnaire was sent to 50 information professionals who had been working in different libraries of Bangladesh through email and/or by post. The respondents were selected from 6 divisions of Bangladesh (25 respondents from Dhaka division, 5 each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet division). We received 30 responses, for a response rate 60%. The results of the study show that that 93.24% of the respondents first read about KM in the literature, but none had taken any courses on KM. Only 6.76% of the respondents had attended a workshop on KM. Findings also yield that most of the professionals believe that communication skills, facilitation skills, coaching skills, mentoring skills, networking skills, negotiating skills, consensus building skills and team working skills are inevitable for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. This paper also suggests some critical success factors for encouraging the information professionals to KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. It investigates the original views of the library and information professionals of Bangladesh regarding the skills and competences of information professionals for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. The department of Information Science and Library Management of Dhaka University and Rajshahi University should introduce KM course(s) either in the graduate level or in the post-graduate leve

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to identify the perception of the LIS specialists about the use of mobile phones in retrieving information. It investigates the present status of the LIS specialists regarding mobile phone usage, perceptions regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and point out the possible drawbacks and their solutions for embracing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and providing some suggestions. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The authors used a survey method using a structured questionnaire to measure the perception of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. Findings – The findings confirmed that the majority (72%) of LIS specialists have the experience of using mobile phones from more than 10 years. Findings also indicate that the LIS specialists overall agreed with the statements of advantages of using mobile phones with a mean score of 5.30. This paper concludes that the respondents also agreed with a mean score 5.37 regarding the possible advantages of introducing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. Originality/value – The paper explores the original perceptions of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/13282/13282.pd

An exploratory study on knowledge sharing practices among professionals in Bangladesh

    No full text
This study aims to explore the environment, behaviour patterns, and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for knowledge sharing (KS) practices by the professionals from different sectors in Bangladesh. This study employs the quantitative approach and a survey method. The findings show that the professionals held positive perceptions about KS practices and most of them believe that KS practices can enhance their professional efficiency. While most professionals found ICTs useful for KS, they faced technological problems in addition to communication and social problems in sharing knowledge

Use of social networking sites: Facebook group as a learning management system

    No full text
Social networking sites (SNSs) are becoming popular day by day in academia as well as in business organizations around the world. Facebook as the largest and fastest networking sites, is one of the important SNSs that can play an important role in different academic disciplines. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of SNSs by the undergraduate students of International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). The specific objectives are: (i) to explore the frequency of using SNSs by the undergraduates; (ii) to identify the purpose of using SNSs; (iii) to examine the perceptions of undergraduates for using SNSs as an academic tool; and (iv) finally, to propose Facebook group as a learning management system (LMS) of IIUM. A structured survey questionnaire was distributed among 500 undergraduate students of IIUM and 351 responses were received. The results report that Facebook and Google+ are preferred SNSs. Sharing information with friends, getting connected with people for different level, making new friends, and passing time are the main reasons for using SNSs. This study also proposes a six-step procedure for using Facebook group as a LMS

Glutathione transferases (GSTs) constitute an ancient, ubiquitous, multi-functional antioxidant enzyme superfamily that has great importance on cellular detoxification against abiotic and biotic stresses as well as plant development and growth. The present study aimed to a comprehensive genome-wide identification and functional characterization of GST family in one of the economically important legume plants-Medicago truncatula. Here, we have identified a total of ninety-two putative MtGST genes that code for 120 proteins. All these members were classified into twelve classes based on their phylogenetic relationship and the presence of structural conserved domain/motif. Among them, 7 MtGST gene pairs were identified to have segmental duplication. Expression profiling of MtGST transcripts revealed their high level of organ/tissue-specific expression in most of the developmental stages and anatomical tissues. The transcripts of MtGSTU5, MtGSTU8, MtGSTU17, MtGSTU46, and MtGSTU47 showed significant up-regulation in response to various abiotic and biotic stresses. Moreover, transcripts of MtGSTU8, MtGSTU14, MtGSTU28, MtGSTU30, MtGSTU34, MtGSTU46 and MtGSTF8 were found to be highly upregulated in response to drought treatment for 24h and 48h. Among the highly stress-responsive MtGST members, MtGSTU17 showed strong affinity towards its conventional substrates reduced glutathione (GSH) and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) with the lowest binding energy of-5.7 kcal/mol and -6.5 kcal/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the substrate-binding site residues of MtGSTU17 were found to be highly conserved. These findings will facilitate the further functional and evolutionary characterization of GST genes in Medicago
