Formal definition of the Lower Jurassic McCoy Brook Formation, Fundy Rift Basin, eastern Canada
No full textThe name McCoy Brook Formation, presently in informal use, is formally proposed to designate outcrops of Lower Jurassic (Hettangian-Pliensbachian) strata overlying the North Mountain Basalt in the structural Minas Subbasin of the Fundy Rift Basin. It is also proposed that this designation be extended to include stratigraphically equivalent strata beneath the Bay of Fundy throughout the entire Fundy Rift Basin. It is further recommended that use of the name Scots Bay Formation, the current designation for post-basalt Jurassic sediments outcropping on the south side of the Minas Subbasin, be discontinued. The name Scots Bay Member of the McCoy Brook Formation is used here to designate distinctive lacustrine strata at the base of the McCoy Brook Formation outcropping on both sides of the Minas Subbasin.
RÉSUMÉ
On propose officiellement le nom de Formation de McCoy Brook, qui est présentement utilise de manière officieuse, pour désigner les affleurements ou les strates du Jurassique inférieur (Hettangien-Pliensbachien) recouvrant le basalte du mont North dans le sous-bassin structurel Minas du bassin d'effondrement Fundy. Il est en outre proposé que l’on étende ce nom pour qu'il cnglobe les strates stratigraphiquement équivalentes sous la baie de Fundy dans l'ensemble du bassin d'effondrement Fundy. Il est par ailleurs recommandé que l'on cesse d'utiliser le nom de Formation de Scots Bay, nom actuel de l'affleurement de sédiments du Jurassique postérieur au basalte sur la rive sud du sous-bassin Minas. On utilise ici le nom de membre Scots Bay de la Formation de McCoy Brook pour désigner les strates lacustres caractéristiques à la base de l'affleurement de la Formation de McCoy Brook sur les deux rives du sous-basin Minas.

No full textPublié en 1962, le livre de Charles N.R. McCoy, intitulé The Structure of Political Thought, demeure un travail important, encore qu’oublié, sur l’histoire de la philosophie politique. Bien que l’ouvrage ait reçu de bonnes appréciations, il n’existe pas encore d’examen critique de son traitement de la théorie politique médiévale. Dans le présent article, j’explore la structure de son argument dans les deux chapitres sur la pensée médiévale, en montrant comment McCoy centre sa discussion sur une investigation des différentes méthodes interprétatives qu’emploient Thomas d’Aquin et Marsile de Padoue en lisant Aristote. Il le fait dans le dessein de déterminer comment l’enseignement aristotélicien — touchant la structure de la pensée politique — est le mieux préservé par (et accompli au sein de) la Révélation.Published in 1962, Charles N.R. McCoy’s The Structure of Political Thought remains an important, albeit neglected, work on the history of political philosophy. Though there has been some appreciation of his study, there has never been a critical examination of his treatment of medieval political theory. In my paper, I explore the structure of his argument in the two chapters on medieval thought, showing how McCoy centers his discussion on an investigation of the different interpretative methods Thomas Aquinas and Marsilius of Padua employ when reading Aristotle. He does so in order to establish how the Aristotelian teaching — concerning the structure of political thought — is best protected by (and fulfilled within) revelation
Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction
No full textGeographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur

No full textThe aim of this thesis is to determine how women are treated in selectedworks of Henry de Montherlant. This is explored by examining their relationshipswith other women as well as with men. Inevitably, this leads to an analysis ofthe multifaceted area of love. Part I researches Montherlant's prose work and included in this section is the investigation of the importance of 'l'ordre male' to the author and the influence this exerts over his early prose work in the areas of tauromachy, war and sport, and where the male adherence to this concept leaves women. The 'syncretisme et alternance' which is central to Montherlant's thinking is explored in this section.Part 2 is concerned with Montherlant's theatre in which the psychological development of the main characters is of great importance. It is in this section that a comparative study is made of the influence of Mme. Elisabeth Zehrfuss' written contribution to La Reine morte. Her unpublished notes are set out in full in the Appendix. The thesis also draws on the unpublished correspondence between Henry de Montherlant and Elisabeth Zehrfuss between the years 1934 and 1945. An investigation is made as to whether or not there are any differences between the way women are treated in Montherlant's prose and in his theatre and the conclusion is drawn that there are
