Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Layer-by-layer assembly of graphene oxide and 12-molybdosilicate composite films for the electrocatalytic reduction of chloroform in neutral aqueous solution
Tetra-MnIII-containing 30-Tungsto-4-phosphate, [MnIII4 (H2O)2(P2W15O56)2]12-: Entrapped PEDOT films, surface analysis and electrochemical study
A MnIII-substituted Wells-Dawson-type polyoxoanion, [MnIII 4 (H2O)2(P2W15O56)2] 12− (Mn4(P2W15)2), was surface immobilised within the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. The resulting immobilised films were characterised by electrochemical techniques and subjected to a compositional and morphological characterization by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The redox activity of the entrapped Mn4(P2W15)2 was observed within the polymer phase. The conducting polymer films exhibited a pH-dependant redox activity associated with the polyanion Mn4(P2W15)2 and thin layer behaviour up to 100 mVs− 1 with enhanced stability towards redox cycling
Electrochemical, surface and electrocatalytic properties of layer-by-layer multilayer assemblies composed of silver nanoparticles and a Ni(II)-crown type polyoxometalate
Multilayer assemblies composed of the crown type polyoxometalate, Ni4[(P8W48O148)(WO2)]28−, and silver nanoparticles, have been immobilised onto glassy carbon electrode surfaces through the layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The resulting thin films have been characterised by electrochemical and surface based techniques with the multilayers showing electrocatalytic ability towards the reduction of chlorate in solution. The layers exhibited redox activity for both the POM and silver nanoparticle moieties with the layers showing good stability towards redox cycling and thin layer behaviour. The layers were found to be highly conductive due to the presence of the nanoparticles as shown by AC impedance and resulting charge transfer resistance values (Rct) obtained for the layers. A clear and significant catalytic ability of Ni4[(P8W48O148)(WO2)]28/AgNP's assembly towards the chlorate reduction was observed with a measured sensitivity of 32.3mAcm−2/(μM)

Timothy Meyer serves as a contributing author for UN report
Assistant Professor Timothy Meyer served as a contributing author for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization\u27s report titled Networks for Prosperity: Connecting Development Knowledge Beyond 2015. The document, which was released during November, analyzes the nexus between the global connectedness of a country and its economic success, sustainability and government effectiveness. Meyer was one of only approximately 20 academic and practical experts from around the world selected to serve as a contributor after a global call for proposals.

Surface Immobilization of a Tetra-Ruthenium Substituted Polyoxometalate Water Oxidation Catalyst Through the Employment of Conducting Polypyrrole and the Layer-by-Layer (LBL) Technique
A tetra Ru-substituted polyoxometalate Na10[{Ru4O4(OH)2(H2O)4}(γ-
SiW10O36)2] (Ru4POM) has been successfully immobilised onto glassy carbon
electrodes and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass slides through the employment of
a conducting polypyrrole matrix and the layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The resulting
Ru4POM doped polypyrrole films showed stable redox behavior associated with the Ru
centres within the Ru4POM, whereas, the POM’s tungsten-oxo redox centres were not
accessible. The films showed pH dependent redox behavior within the pH range 2−5
whilst exhibiting excellent stability towards redox cycling. The layer-by-layer assembly
was constructed onto poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) modified
carbon electrodes by alternate depositions of Ru4POM and a Ru(II) metallodendrimer. The resulting Ru4POM assemblies
showed stable redox behavior for the redox processes associated with Ru4POM in the pH range 2−5. The charge transfer
resistance of the LBL films was calculated through AC-Impedance. Surface characterization of both the polymer and LBL
Ru4POM films was carried out using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning
electron microscopy (SEM). Initial investigations into the ability of the Ru4POM LBL films to electrocatalytically oxidise water at
pH 7 have also been conducted

Five minutes with Timothy Gowers: “academics can publish journals of the highest quality without a commercial entity”
Fields Medal-winning Cambridge mathematician Sir Timothy Gowers and a team of colleagues have recently launched a new editor-owned Open Access (OA) journal for mathematics. Discrete Analysis is an arXiv overlay journal, which means articles are submitted and hosted via the preprint server arXiv first. The journal coordinates peer-review and publishes via Scholastica with no cost to reader or author. Gowers reflects here on his vision for the future of editor-owned journals
