    Amnestus longinoi Mayorga and Cervantes n. sp. (Figs. 2 c, 4g, 5g, 6g, 7g, 8g) Diagnosis. Tylus longer than juga; pronotum slightly convex dorsally with deep and dense punctures on all surfaces, lateral margins carinate; prosternal carina higher on anterior half and curved apically. (Fig. 4g). Description. Head, pronotum, prosternal carina, and abdomen castaneous; antennal and rostral segments and legs pale brown; scutellum and a small macula on basal margin of corium dark brown; hemelytra pale yellow. Head. Posterior half with scattered punctures; tylus longer than juga and with four pegs; juga with five pegs; antennal segment II very short and segment V longer than segments III or IV; rostrum reaching base of metasternum. Thorax. Pronotum. Anterior lobe concave with scattered punctures, anterolateral margins entire, slightly carinate; posterior lobe with dense punctures. Propleura. Shiny and smooth; prosternal carina high (Fig. 4g). Mesopleura. Flat, evaporatorium reaching anterior and lateral margins of pleura. Metapleura. Evaporatorium reaching posterior and lateral margins of pleura; peritreme elongated and shiny with apex slightly curved, and posterior margin entire (Fig. 5g). Legs. Fore tibiae with six robust spines on dorsal margin; fore femora with a bifid spine on posterior half of ventral surface (Fig. 6g). Hind femora with a small and simple spine near apex on ventral margin, and another spine near apex on dorsal margin (Fig. 7g). Scutellum. Triangular with acute apex, disc with punctures arranged in rows along lateral margins, and evenly distributed on disc. Hemelytra. Clavus and corium with punctures arranged in rows; membrane hyaline and surpassing apex of abdomen. Abdomen shiny, with fine hairs evenly distributed. Male genitalia. Parameres small, divided mesially with long setae dorsally and short setae ventrally (Fig. 8g). Male measurements (n= 5).     Amnestus santiagensis Mayorga and Cervantes n. sp. (Figs. 2 c, 4 k, 5 k, 6 k, 7 k, 8 k) Diagnosis. Juga with five robust pegs; posterior half of head with scattered punctures; pronotum with anterior margin concave with series of deep setigerous punctures; prosternal carina low (Fig. 4 k); hind tibiae with distal half flattened; posterior half of pronotum and scutellum dark brown. Description. Head, antennal segments I–V, anterior half of pronotum, prosternal carina, abdominal venter, clavus, and coria pale brown. Rostral segments and legs pale yellow. Head. Anterior half without punctures; tylus with four robust spines on apex and longer than juga; antennal segment II very short; rostrum reaching anterior half of metasternum. Thorax. Pronotum with anterior margin concave, anterior half convex with scattered small punctures; anterior half of anterolateral margins slightly carinate; posterior margin broad and convex; laterally straight; propleura shiny and smooth; prosternal carina low and sinuate (Fig. 4 k). Mesopleura flat, evaporatorium reaching anterior and lateral margins, with an elevated and dull area in the middle of posterior half. Metapleura flat, evaporatorium extending to posterior and lateral margins; peritreme shiny and elongated; posterior margin of evaporatorium slightly toothed (Fig. 5 k). Legs. Fore tibiae with five spines on dorsal margin, fore femora with a bifid middle spine on ventral margin; hind femora with a simple spine near apex on ventral margin (Fig. 6 k); hind tibiae with basal half flat with a spine on base of ventral margin (Fig. 7 k). Scutellum triangular with scattered punctures on disc. Hemelytra. Corium with uniformly distributed punctures; clavus with three rows of punctures; membrane hyaline strongly surpassing apex of abdomen. Abdomen shiny, ventrally convex, covered with fine hairs.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia. METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively). CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK. Comment in Ophthalmology. 2006 Feb;113(2):357; author reply 357-8

    Nutrients Export by Rivers to the Coastal Waters of Africa: Past and Future trends

    We analyze past and future trends in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C) export by rivers to the coastal waters of Africa as calculated by the Global Nutrient Export to WaterShed (NEWS) models for the period 1970–2050. Between 1970 and 2000 the total nutrient export by African rivers increased by 10–80%. For future years (2000–2050) we calculate an increase in the total loads of dissolved forms of N and P, but decreasing trends for dissolved organic C and particulate forms of N and P. There are large regions that deviate from these pan-African trends. We explore the regional patterns and the underlying processes, in particular for the Nile, Zaire, Niger, and Zambezi. In the future, anthropogenic sources may, in large parts of Africa, become larger contributors to riverine nutrient loads than natural source

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
