Foreign direct investment in a macroeconomic framework : finance, efficiency, incentives, and distortions

Does foreign direct investment (FDI) increase domestic investment, or does it provide additional foreign exchange for a pre-existing current account deficit, or some linear combination of the two? The author investigates this question for a group of five Pacific Basin countries and a control group of 11 other developing countries. For the sample of all 16 developing countries, the author finds that FDI does not provide additional balance of payments financing for a pre-existing current account deficit. In the control group of 11 developing countries, FDI is associated with reduced domestic investment - implying that FDI to those countries is simply a close substitute for other capital inflows. For the five Pacific Basin market economies, however, FDI raises domestic investment by the full extent of the FDI inflow. The author finds that FDI has a significantly negative impact on national saving in the sample of all 16 developing countries. For the control group, this negative effect is similar in magnitude to FDI's negative effect on domestic investment - implying a zero effect on the current account. But FDI's negative effect on national saving in the five Pacific Basin developing market economies implies that FDI could have more of a negative effect on the current account than through increased domestic investment alone. The author also investigates the impact of FDI on economic growth in these 16 countries, taking into account distortions in the economies. He estimates reduced-form current account equations, and presents an analytical framework for estimating FDI's effect on economic growth in the presence of incentive-disincentive packages and other economic distortions. He illustrates his framework using indicators of foreign trade and financial distortions. His main conclusion: the effect of FDI differs markedly from one group of countries to another. FDI has a negative effect on economic growth in the control group. It has the same positive effect on growth as domestically financed investment does in the Pacific Basin countries. The main cause for the different effect is the low level of distortion in the Pacific Basin countries.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Foreign Direct Investment,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Macroeconomic Management

Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis for diabetic nephropathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus and is associated with considerable morbidity and high mortality. There is increasing evidence to suggest that dysregulation of the epigenome is involved in diabetic nephropathy. We assessed whether epigenetic modification of DNA methylation is associated with diabetic nephropathy in a case-control study of 192 Irish patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Cases had T1D and nephropathy whereas controls had T1D but no evidence of renal disease. METHODS: We performed DNA methylation profiling in bisulphite converted DNA from cases and controls using the recently developed Illumina Infinium(R) HumanMethylation27 BeadChip, that enables the direct investigation of 27,578 individual cytosines at CpG loci throughout the genome, which are focused on the promoter regions of 14,495 genes. RESULTS: Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) analysis indicated that significant components of DNA methylation variation correlated with patient age, time to onset of diabetic nephropathy, and sex. Adjusting for confounding factors using multivariate Cox-regression analyses, and with a false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.05, we observed 19 CpG sites that demonstrated correlations with time to development of diabetic nephropathy. Of note, this included one CpG site located 18 bp upstream of the transcription start site of UNC13B, a gene in which the first intronic SNP rs13293564 has recently been reported to be associated with diabetic nephropathy. CONCLUSION: This high throughput platform was able to successfully interrogate the methylation state of individual cytosines and identified 19 prospective CpG sites associated with risk of diabetic nephropathy. These differences in DNA methylation are worthy of further follow-up in replication studies using larger cohorts of diabetic patients with and without nephropathy

Analysis for dissipative Maxwell-Bloch type models

This thesis deals with the mathematical modeling of semi-classical matter-light interaction. In the semi-classical picture, matter is described by a density matrix "rho", a quantum mechanical concept. Light on the other hand, is described by a classical electromagnetic field "(E,H)". We give a short overview of the physical background, introduce the usual coupling mechanism and derive the classical Maxwell-Bloch equations which have intensively been studied in the literature. Moreover, We introduce a mathematical framework in which we state a systematic approach to include dissipative effects in the Liouville-von-Neumann equation. The striking advantage of our approach is the intrinsic existence of a Liapunov function for solutions to the resulting evolution equation. Next, we couple the resulting equation to the Maxwell equations and arrive at a new self-consistent dissipative Maxwell-Bloch type model for semi-classical matter-light interaction. The main focus of this work lies on the intensive mathematical study of the dissipative Maxwell-Bloch type model. Since our model lacks Lipschitz continuity, we create a regularized version of the model that is Lipschitz continuous. We mostly restrict our analysis to the Lipschitz continuous regularization. For regularized versions of the dissipative Maxwell-Bloch type model, we prove existence of solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. The core of the proof is based on results from compensated compactness due to P. Gérard and a Rellich type lemma. In parts, this proof closely follows the lines of an earlier work due to J.-L. Joly, G. Métivier and J. Rauch

Hyperamylasemia post living donor nephrectomy does not relate to pain

Introduction The aetiology of pain after laparoscopic donor nephrectomy remains unclear. Given the proximity of the left kidney to the tail of the pancreas, we aimed to assess whether mobilisation and retrieval of the left kidney might inflame the pancreas, leading to pain and hyperamylasaemia in the post-operative period. Patient and methods In the present study, 16 consecutive live kidney donors were analysed in the same three months period. Amylase levels were measured on days 1 and 2. For each 24-hour period postoperatively analgesia consumption was recorded, as well as pain scores at rest on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Results Three out of 16 donors presented hyperamylasemia. A multiple regression analysis found levobupivacaine dose, propofol dose, transversus abdominis plane block and day 1 amylase did not significantly predict pain scores. Interestingly, body mass index significantly correlated with increased pain scores (p = 0.041). Also, increasing CO2 insufflation pressure and use of local anaesthetic infusion catheters predicted a decreased deep pain score (p = 0.036 and p = 0.037). Conclusion There was no correlation of amylase levels and pain scores. Pancreatitis is a rare complication of nephrectomy and no overt cases were seen in the case of donor nephrectomy

The purpose of diploma thesis “Life and work of Alexander Rauter”, a priest, poet and professor of mathematics, was to present Rauter\u27s literary work based on seven themes. These themes are love, death, life, spiritual, historical and folk songs as well as lyrics which the poet dedicated to poets and writers. The present work provides a concise overview of his literary work as well as searching for similarities and differences between his collections of poetry. The thesis is based on theory and is the result of a thorough study of literature and other sources. The following theoretical methods were used: the descriptive method (Alexander Rauter’s curriculum vitæ), the comparative method (comparing the themes of love, death, life, spiritual, historical and folk songs and poems about poets and writers), the method of classification (classifying Alexander Rauter’s literary work in Slovene area and literature) and the method of synthesis and analysis (analysis of facts). In the analysis and synthesis of Rauter\u27s literary work is shown that the motives are very different because of his interest for a variety of topics. The subject of his poems is mostly taken from the author\u27s experience and perception and therefore his reflection is often noticeable. Recognizable characteristic of his poems is that small events are given great significance through which the author wants to lead readers of his poetry accordant with Christian values and doctrine
