KISTI-IITD Joint Project 2014 Results: Knowledge Representation and Extraction of Single Event

State-of-the-art approaches to IE employ supervised machine learning classifiers and hence, need large volumes of annotated training data from domain experts. This annotation process is expensive, time-consuming, and relies heavily on the availability of domain experts.
In this work, IITD builds an alternative paradigm for IE, which is based on a rule-based system in which the rules apply over domain-independent semantic processing of a sentence called Open Information Extraction (Open IE). This attractive model allows the domain experts to rapidly define rules in a simple rule language and hence is able to make the best use of expert time. The rules are easy to understand by humans and can be read even by NLP non-experts. Just a few hours of engineering achieves a good performance in the TACKBP slot filling task. A few additional modifications result in meeting the target of 0.2 F1 score on the task.
In addition we deliver a suite of tools associated with this task. This includes a pipeline of entity extraction, open information extraction, relation and event extraction, as well as code for the TACKBP temporal slot filling
Scientometric profile of the journal Mausam
76-80An analysis of 369 items published in Mausam during 2003-2006 indicates that 72% items were papers, 23% letters to the
editor, 4% report on “Weather in India” and the rest 1% as articles. Indian researchers belonging to India Meteorological
Department contributed most of the items. Climatology, agricultural and environmental meteorology, synoptic meteorology,
hydrometeorology, numerical weather forecasting and physical meteorology constituted about 56 % of the total output. Time
lag between receipt and acceptance of the manuscript is about 11 months, while the time lag between acceptance and publication
of the manuscript is about 9. Editorial board members belonged to domestic institutions. The references cited by the journal
are mostly international like other journals in the field. However, majority of the citations are older than 10 years. Based on the
pattern of citations the journal received in the international literature its impact factor for 2005 and 2006 is almost the same
(0.19). However, of the 49 Indian journals indexed by SCI-E in 2005, 18 have impact factor less than or equal to Mausam
PROYEK MAUSAM SEBAGAI INISIATIF INDIA DALAM MENGHIDUPKAN KEMBALI RUTE MARITIM KUNO DI SAMUDRA HINDIA
India meluncurkan proyek Mausam pada peringatan World Heritage Session ke-38 pada tahun 2014 di Doha, Qatar. Mausam merupakan rute maritim dan bentang rute budaya di kawasan Samudra Hindia berdasarkan fakta sejarah masa lalu. Rute maritim dan budaya Mausam membentang di sepanjang Samudra Hindia dan berfungsi untuk menghubungkan antar wilayah dalan kawasan tersebut. Peluncuran Mausam oleh India memiliki dua tujuan utama, secara mikro India ingin mengembalikan kebudayaan dengan memahamkan negara-negara dalam kawasan. Secara makro, India ingin menghidupkan kembali rute maritim kuno di kawasan Samudra Hindia seperti yang pernah ada di masa lalu dengan mengusung nilai-nilai kebudayaan. Proyek maritim dan budaya Mausam ini mencakup 39 negara dari kawasan Asia hingga Afrika. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui latar belakang diluncurkannya proyek maritim dan budaya Mausam oleh India. Untuk menjelaskan latar belakang tersebut, peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kebudayaan dan pengaruhnya dalam pengambilan kebijakan luar negeri serta tinjauan diplomasi budaya yang dilakukan oleh India. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan indikasi India ingin menjaga eksistensinya dan menjadi superior di kawasan melaui inisiatif Mausamnya
Intake of animal-based foods and consumer behaviour towards organic food: The Case from Nepal
This study aims to segment Nepalese consumers based on their frequency intake of animal-based foods and thereby determine determinants of organic food purchasing behaviour to suggest possible marketing strategies. A face-to-face survey was conducted among Nepalese consumers (n = 527), employing the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as a conceptual framework extended with knowledge, environmental concern, health consciousness, and background factors (socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics). Three segments were identified employing k-mean segmentation: All Low (n = 113), High Dairy (n = 246), and High Dairy and Meat (n = 168). A covariance-based structural equation modelling (CB-SEM) analysis indicated that perceived behavioural control was the main predictor of organic food purchasing intention, followed by attitude, subjective norms, knowledge, and environmental concern. Health consciousness showed no significant influence on organic food purchasing intention. Organic food purchasing intention had a strong positive and significant influence on organic food purchasing behaviour. Socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics were found to influence behavioural intention indirectly by their effects on attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, knowledge, and environmental concern. Income seems to also have a direct influence on organic food purchasing behaviour. Further, the segment with a low intake of animal-based foods held positive attitudes towards organic food and higher environmental concerns. The findings can be used to inform organic food producers and targeted marketing campaigns towards promoting organic food purchasing behaviour in Nepal and similar countries.The file contains the dataset of consumer research conducted in three cities of Nepal: Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

A Hybridized Planner for Stochastic Domains
Markov Decision Processes are a powerful framework
for planning under uncertainty, but current algorithms
have difficulties scaling to large problems.
We present a novel probabilistic planner based on
the notion of hybridizing two algorithms. In particular,
we hybridize GPT, an exact MDP solver, with
MBP, a planner that plans using a qualitative (nondeterministic)
model of uncertainty. Whereas exact
MDP solvers produce optimal solutions, qualitative
planners sacrifice optimality to achieve speed
and high scalability. Our hybridized planner, HYBPLAN,
is able to obtain the best of both techniques
— speed, quality and scalability. Moreover, HYBPLAN
has excellent anytime properties and makes
effective use of available time and memory
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Stem cell-based photodynamic therapy
We have transfected murine neural stem cells (NSCs) and rat umbilical cord matrix-derived stem cells (RUCMSCs) with a plasmid expressing gaussia luciferase (gLuc). These cells are engineered to secrete the luciferase. We have used gLuc containing supernatant from culturing the NSCs to perform in vitro photodynamic therapy of murine melanoma cells (B16F10), and RUCMSCs to perform in vivo PDT of lung melanomas in C57BL/6 mice. The treatment system was comprised of aminolevulic acid as a prodrug for the synthesis of the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX, gaussia luciferase, and its’ substrate coelenterazine. A significant reduction of the number of live melanoma cells in vitro and a borderline significant retardation of tumour growth in vivo was observed after coelenterazine-mediated PDT
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
