The synthesis and structure of transition metal oxides for battery applications
The Synthesis and Structure of Transition Metal Oxides for Battery Applications by Matthew James Oliver Low temperature hydrothermal routes to bismuth (V) containing materials have been investigated. Results indicate that MgBiaOe, obtained by the hydrothermal reaction of magnesium chloride with sodium bismuthate, crystallises with a trimtile-type structure. Attempts to synthesise the equivalent calcium compound yielded CaiBiiO?, which was found to adopt a pyrochlore structure. The attempted synthesis of the strontium equivalent produced a material with an X-ray diffraction pattern indicative of a layered material with an inter-layer separation of 13.657(4)A. Single phase products were not obtained under a wide variety of reaction conditions in the case of Zn, Cd, and Ba. Two new alkali metal iron oxide materials have been synthesised, RbFeOi and CsFeOi. The structures of these two compounds have been investigated using powder X-ray diffraction and time of flight powder neutron diffraction. Powder neutron data confirmed an orthorhombic space group, Pbca, for KFeOz and RbFeOi and a cubic space group, Fd-3m, for CsFeOa. The increased symmetry, as a result of incorporating the larger cations into the structure, is reflected by an opening up of the Fe-O-Fe bond angle from 136.1° (KFe02) to 151.69° (RbFeOi) and 180° (CsFe02). Preliminary attempts at exchanging the potassium ion for lithium in these structures were inconclusive but energy dispersive X-ray analysis and ion-conduction data from related compounds indicate that this may be feasible. Hydrothermal reactions at high-pressures (up to 40000psi) and high temperatures (700°C) were utilised to try and synthesise structures containing manganese stabilised in unusually high oxidation states. The potassium equivalent of the mixed valent NaiMngOy could not be formed. X-ray diffraction data pointing to the formation of KuaMngOiG with the hollandite structure.</p

The effect of posture on the regional deposition of an inhaled aerosol
Inhaled drugs continue to provide the foundation for treating airways disease in acute and chronic conditions, allowing the delivery of active agents directly to the site of the disease with minimal systemic absorption. The role of particle size and respiratory manoeuvre on deposition are appreciated but the impact that posture may have is not. Current understanding of respiratory physiology states changes in posture result in the ventilation gradients within the lung. This thinking is based on two-dimensional (2D) imaging which has the obvious limitation of projecting a three- dimensional (3D) structure in 2D. In recent years these restrictions have been overcome, particularly in the field of aerosol science, with the use of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). This provides 3D information on the distribution of the isotopes and is aligned with the anatomical structures using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). From this background the hypothesis that the position in which an individual inhales an aerosol has an effect on its regional deposition within the lung was formulated. To test this, ten healthy subjects were recruited to a randomised, cross over, clinical trail. Each individual inhaled a nebulised suspension of human serum albumin (HSA) radiolabelled with ^^'^Tc on three separate occasions in three different positions (sitting, supine lying and right side lying). The aerosol was delivered in a controlled manner using a closed nebuliser circuit that regulated the subjects' respiratory pattern. The total and regional pulmonary deposition of the aerosol was assessed using planar 2D imaging and SPECT aligned with MRI. data sets demonstrated that posture had a significant effect on the regional deposition of an inhaled aerosol. The SPECT data set was analysed in terms of the central to peripheral distribution in a series of shells and in terms of the lung segments. The anatomical model highlighted uneven distribution of the aerosol within the lungs that changed dramatically with posture. This may have implications for the delivery of drugs to the lung.</p
Tree hollows, tree dimensions and tree age in Eucalyptus microcarpa Maiden (Grey Box) in Victoria
Deposited with permission of the author. © 2007 Matthew James Looby.Eucalyptus microcarpa Maiden (Grey Box) is a common and widespread woodland and open forest in south-eastern Australia. In Victoria, it features prominently in woodlands throughout the southern, central and northern plains environments, and also in the box-ironbark forests of the Great Dividing Range. Temperate grassy woodlands have been extensively modified since European settlement of Victoria and consequently the native biodiversity associated with them has undergone a dramatic decline. Paramount to this decline has been the landscape-scale reduction in tree cover associated with agricultural clearing, which in some regions approaches 95% or pre-European extent. Similar to most other woodland tree species, E. microcarpa is today restricted to small remnant patches or relict individuals within agricultural landscapes where extensive stands once occurred
