Search for millicharged particles at the LHC with the milliQan prototype

No full text
We report on the results of a recent search for fractionally charged particlesusing a data sample of 37.5 fb1\textrm{fb}^{-1} proton-proton collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeVprovided by the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2018. This search was carried out with a prototype scintillator-based detector, which allows the first sensitivity to particles with charges 0.1\le0.1e at a hadron collider. The existence of new particles with masses between 20 and 4700 MeV is excluded at 95\% confidence level for charges between 0.006e and 0.3e, depending on their mass. New sensitivity is achieved for masses larger than 700 MeV. The successful operation of the milliQan prototype provides crucial lessons for the design of the full milliQan detector

Vaginal douche products have been associated with cervical cancer. We examined female sex workers (FSWs) in Nigeria who douche with lemon or lime juice and compared the findings with that of nonusers. We obtained Pap smears and performed colposcopy of the vulva, vagina and cervix. A total of 374 FSWs comprising 81 Lemon users (LUs) and 293 non lemon users (NLUs) were examined. Their mean age was 27.8 ± 6.7 (range 16-63) years. At colposcopy, 17(4.5%) had genital warts [LUs 5(6.2%); NLUs 12(4.1%); p=0.43], 61(16.3%) had suspected squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) [LUs 17(21.0%); NLUs 44(15.0%); p=0.20] and 65(17.4%) had other findings. Pap smear cytology showed that 87(24.6%) had SILs [LUs 26(33.3%); NLUs 61(22.1%); p=0.03]. Lemon/lime use was associated with cervical dysplasia after controlling for HIV status (Adjusted OR=1.8; 95% CI, 1.0-3.0). Our data suggests an association between the practice of douching with citrus juice and cervical dysplasia (Afr J Reprod Health 2009; 13[1]:37-45).Les produits de la douche vaginale ont été liés au cancer du col.

Searches for disappearing and emerging new particles at CMS

We exploit the full power of the large amount of the pp collisions recorded between 2016 and 2018 by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1, to search for new particles leading to non-standard signatures in the detector. In this seminar, we present two searches. The first analysis looks for long-lived particles decaying to delayed jets and missing transverse momentum, where the timing capabilities of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter are used for the first time to identify these jets in candidate signal events. The second analysis exploits the disappearing track signature expected from new long-lived charged particles that would decay within the volume of the CMS tracking detector. The searches are interpreted in two simplified, supersymmetric models of gluino pair production. In these models, mass limits at 95% confidence level reach up to 2.5 TeV, unaccessible when using traditional approaches.</p

The workshop as the work: white anti-racism organising in 1960s, 70s, and 80s US social movements

This thesis explores the rise of anti-racism workshops developed by white activists in various United States social movements from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. The shifting ideology of the black freedom movement in the late 1960s, from integration to Black Power, transformed white activists‘ place within racial justice struggles. While recent scholarship has begun to turn its attention towards whites‘ ongoing racial justice activities, one of the most radical and widespread of these efforts is consistently overlooked: anti-racism workshops. Increasingly prevalent from the late 1960s through to the diversity-trainings explosion of the 1990s, this thesis demonstrates that these workshops had their roots in the black freedom, women‘s liberation and gay liberation movements. White activists from these movements led these workshops in order to examine white racial domination and privilege within both leftist social movements and larger US society. Analysing case studies from the black freedom, women‘s liberation and gay liberation/rights movements, this thesis explores the foundational assumptions of anti-racism workshops. It seeks to explain how and why these efforts sought to frame race and racism as issues of knowledge and consciousness and why such efforts constituted radical praxis. It is argued that early anti-racism workshops were pedagogical projects that sought to confront the racial ignorance that structured the lives of whites in the US, including progressives and their liberation movements. This thesis draws attention to the efficacy and power of these workshops in terms of their epistemological effects, in the transformations they brought about in whites‘ understanding, or awareness, of racial realities

Translating hiraeth, performing adoption: art as mediation and form of cultural production

Performance Studies as a site of resistance bridges the gap between theory and practice. As an ‘inter-discipline’, Performance Studies occupies an ideal borderline location from which to stress the crucial mediatory power of creative production, as well as providing a critical space for interrogating the liminal subject positioning of adoption as framed under Western legislation. This autoethnographic performance into adoption (re)stor(y)ing is an arts-based inquiry generated through my praxis and the ‘particular’ life experience of excavating the silences and social norms within a ‘closed’, cross-cultural, adoption. As a form of knowledge production, this experiential process of meaning-making is integral to my arts-practice and research. This body of work challenges the limitations of linear thesis writing and the more traditional tenets of legitimate academic inquiry, as espoused by Enlightenment thinking. In this project, I draw together issues of agency and (il)legitimacy within adoption as an institutionalised social practice, with issues of performative and (il)legitimate modes of knowledge production within academic hierarchies of literacy. Following a hermeneutic spiral, a mediated body of research is substantially represented through the multimedia Installation, Translating Hiraeth (pronounced ‘hirr-eye-th’). Employing a fragmented narrative structure and a form of ‘critical nostalgia’, Translating Hiraeth examines this in-between space called ‘adoption’. Juxtaposed with the (re)stor(y)ing project, which makes visible the contingent, embodied processes of understanding over time, is a broad socio-political overview of adoption. Here, I take into account political and legislative change leading to recent paradigm shifts in adoption thinking including new international agreements and the effects of globalisation. These changes open up the past within an ever-changing present. The creative project offers an emotional and performative site exposing the dialogic nature of translating the ‘self’ across families, cultures, places and pasts, whilst also questioning contemporary notions of identity and (be)longing. It is my intention that Translating Hiraeth Performing Adoption enacts autoethnographic praxis as a generative force of expression, as social commentary and means of cultural production

As Memórias (1865), de Hector Berlioz: legitimação e rasura de um autor / The Memoirs (1865), by Hector Berlioz: Legitimation and Erasure of an Author

Abstract: This article aims to propose a re-reading of Berlioz’s The Memoirs (1865), developing the hypothesis of an obliterated author ethos. It will revisit the concept of ethos and its functionality in the interpretation of literary discourse (MAINGUENEAU, 2004), denatured and seen as a cultural construct. In addition to analyzing the discourse, the question of Berlioz’s autobiography demanded the use of reading methods from approaches offered by the history of publishing and the theories of the literary field (BOURDIEU, 1992). Berlioz’s Memoirs combine discursive strategies of projection of a composer ethos, as well as the affirmation and erasure of an ethos of writer, composing a persona of romantic artist. Keywords: Berlioz; memoirs; romanticism; ethos

The films of Chantal Akerman : a cinema of displacements

No full text
This thesis attempts to broaden the critical boundaries within which the films of Chantal Akerman have been discussed. First, it extends analysis from Akerman's 70s to her 80s and 90s films. Second, it argues that as well as her gender and aesthetic identities, Akerman's Belgian and Jewish identities should be acknowledged. Finally, it suggests that each of these four identities: woman, independent film-maker, Belgian and Jewish allow her a position of marginality, figured in her films through the trope of 'displacement'. The structure of the thesis is two-fold: it extends discussion of Akerman's cinema to films not previously considered, and through this extension engages with contemporary issues in film and cultural theory such as female authorship, independent and national, and marginal cinemas. Chapter one `Woman' and chapter two `Independent' extend the reading of gender and sexuality and formal and aesthetic innovation in Akerman's cinema. In the first chapter this is done through consideration of the films Golden Eighties (1986) and Nuit et jour (1990), while in the second her short films, video work and work for television are examined. My third and fourth chapters offer areas of Akerman's work which have not previously been studied. Chapter three, `Belgian', considers the significance of Akerman's nationality for her film-making while engaging with theories around national cinema. It examines the possibility of a `Belgian national cinema' and the intersections which arise between this and Akerman's cinema, especially around Toute une nuit (1982). Finally, in my fourth chapter, `Jewish', I use Histoires d'Amerigue (1989) and D'Est (1993) to argue that Akerman's is a `wandering' cinema, in which she is constantly examining the homelessness and displacement that her Jewishness engenders
