Fantastic Architecture and the Building of Europe in Valerio Evangelisti's Eymerich Fiction
Concomitant with the horizontal expansion of EU territory through physical and political enlargement is a genealogy narrative, which emphasizes the ostensible roots of Europeanness in classical antiquity and Christianity. In the face of this sanitized genealogy, which lies at the heart of the European constitutional project, a range of alternative and more inclusive narratives circulate in contemporary European popular fiction. This paper focuses on a series of fantasy novels by the Italian author Valerio Evangelisti, featuring Inquisitor Eymerich as hero-investigator. In his highly popular novels, Evangelisti seeks to uncover layers of shared historical memory untainted with post-Enlightenment rhetoric.
The central architectural tropes of Evangelisti’s imaginary world are those of a castle and a convent, epitomizing the temporal and sacral power in European history. Each isolated from its outside environment and built on layer upon layer of subterranean chambers and corridors, the castle and the convent conceal a past quite different from the one championed in the official European genealogy. Memories of pagan worship and Islamic or Judaic learning – banished from the official rhetoric – continue to thrive, dark and threatening, in the subterranean strata of Evangelisti’s European edifice. Evangelisti thus provides an incisive critique of the official European story of origin, which threatens to suppress any alternative visions of European history or unorthodox avenues for European identity formation
The screenplay of concrete choices" summarizes the need of a type of writing that is very relevant to the modalities of architectural design thinking, rather than literary, historic, philologic or journalistic ones, with the aim to provide proper "syntactic tools" for the comprehension and transmission of the structuring choices behind the architectural design process. Developed during the doctoral seminar held by professor Antonino Saggio at "Sapienza", the writings of Matteo Baldissara, Giulia Cervini, Micaela Didomenicantonio, Massimiliano Modena, Giulia Perugi, Samuel Quagliotto, Elisa Romano, Alessandro Zilio and of the curators Valerio Perna and Gabriele Stancato and of Saggio himself, spread methods and processes of Louis Kahn, Herzog & De Meuron, Steven Holl, Sverre Fehn, Mies van der Rohe e Makoto Sei Watanabe through some of their most significant works, covering a time period of almost ninety years that goes from the twenties of the 20th century to the most recent information technology experimentations in architecture
Mandatory and Contract-Based Shareholding Disclosure
This paper advocates a takeover-neutral legal framework for shareholding disclosure. After showing how the laws on securities custody may affect shareholding disclosure, it summarises the state of the art of shareholder identification and ownership disclosure in some major jurisdictions. Next, it considers the features that should qualify an effective regulatory system of shareholding disclosure and sketches how the applicable rules could be designed with a view to ensure that regulation is takeover-neutral: in particular, the extent to which issuers should be left free to devise their own tailored regime is investigated. Then, the issue of how (supra-national) harmonisation can play a role in this area is discussed. The paper argues for a harmonised policy solution which, while guaranteeing a sufficient degree of standardisation (and, consequently, limited adaptation and compliance costs), also allows for a flexible implementation through a system of centralised default rules and opting in/out choices both at the Member States’ and at the issuers’ level
Mountain and Community: New Approaches for Geographical Research and Regeneration Policies
Mountain research has been a distinctive subject in Italian geographical studies, encompassing both physical and human geography.
These inquiries have frequently been intertwined with governmental issues and strategic national goals. In the last decades of the
20th century, mountain research was focused on addressing socio-environmental imbalances and was developed under a systemic,
neo-positivist approach. This topic reached its peak with the implementation of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI), a
regeneration policy promoted by the Italian government to address environmental changes and rethink the mountain regions. Our
paper aims to provide a critical analysis on mountain research in Italian geography in order to address some issues underlying
governmental policies in mountain regions and to deconstruct an established idea of community that is prevalent in geographical
research and regeneration policies
Hermann Kant. Ein bio- bibliografisches Profil
The proximity to the power apparatus has cast dark shadows on the literary work of Hermann Kant, who is regarded as one of the most read authors of the GDR. Valerio Furneri embeds Kant's life and work in the all-German context of the 20th century and reinterprets his classics such as Die Aula or Der Aufenthalt. The author does not pursue the claim to rehabilitate the GDR, nor to trivialise Kant's role in it. Instead, the attempt is made to look at Kant's entire work from a temporal distance and to re-evaluate it. Through his works, Kant was able to accompany and depict not only the German-German history, but also European history.
