The Application of Problem-Centered Interview as a Method of Pedagogical Research
Get PDFThe purpose of the article is to present the qualitative research method known as Problem-Centered Interview and its potential application in pedagogical research. The author demonstrates the main assumptions and stages of the method, simultaneously analyzing the possible benefits and limitations of its use. The originality of the method is confronted with other types of interviews, i.e.: active, in-depth and classical narrative interview. The application of unique qualities of the method,such as: administering three types of reasoning (deductive, inductive and abductive), addressing the prior knowledge bias of the researcher and taking into account afalsification in the validation process, all of which increase the credibility of research conclusions. The Problem-Centered Interview which is placed between the objectivist Grounded Theory and constructionism is able to provide a new insight into education and upbringing. The role of video games in the identity construction of the young men - a sociopedagogical study

W części teoretycznej analizowane są gry wideo w kontekście popkultury, krytyczne i apologetyczne stanowiska wobec obu oraz ich miejsce w pedagogice. Przedstawiono historię gier wideo, zwracając uwagę na ich uwikłanie w dyskursy męskości. Omówiono teorie związane z badaniami nad grami, w tym zagadnienia takie jak ergodyczność, immersja i proceduralna retoryka. Ostatni rozdział teoretyczny dotyczy męskości, tożsamości płciowej i socjalizacji płciowej.
Badania jakościowe, o charakterze eksploracyjnym, przeprowadzono metodą wywiadu z 12 mężczyznami, analizując ich postrzeganie męskości w kontekście preferowanych stylów gry: rywalizacji (wertykalna socjalizacja) i wcielania się w postacie (horyzontalna socjalizacja) a sposobów odczytywania/kreowania i subwersji znaczeń męskości. Wyniki badań wskazują, że gracze zarówno odczytują, jak i nadają znaczenia męskościom, zarówno zgodnie, jak i opozycyjnie wobec treści zawartych w grach.
Praca wskazuje na potrzebę rozwoju kompetencji cyfrowych wśród rodziców i pedagogów oraz uznania roli gier wideo w socjalizacji młodych mężczyzn, co mogłoby pomóc w kontestowaniu hegemonicznych wzorców męskości. Poruszono także zagrożenia, takie jak stereotypizacja i polaryzacja wzorców męskości oraz budowanie tożsamości opartej na neoliberalnym indywidualizmie.
The dissertation consists of both theoretical and empirical parts. The theoretical section analyzes video games in the context of pop culture, examining both critical and apologetic perspectives, as well as their place in pedagogy. It presents the history of video games, highlighting their entanglement in discourses of masculinity. Theories related to game studies are discussed, including concepts such as ergodicity, immersion, and procedural rhetoric. The final theoretical chapter focuses on masculinity, gender identity, and gender socialization.
Qualitative research, of an exploratory nature, was conducted through interviews with 12 men, analyzing their perceptions of masculinity in the context of preferred gaming styles: competition (vertical socialization) and role-playing (horizontal socialization), as well as the ways of interpreting, creating, and subverting meanings of masculinity. The research findings indicate that players both interpret and ascribe meanings to masculinity, aligning with or opposing the content found in games.
The dissertation highlights the need to develop digital competencies among parents and educators and to recognize the role of video games in the socialization of young men, which could help in challenging hegemonic models of masculinity. It also addresses risks such as stereotyping, polarization of masculinity models, and the construction of identity based on neoliberal individualism
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
