Husbandry and healthcare of the Olive python (Liasis olivaceus)
The article describes the care of the Olive python (Liasis olivaceus; including information on housing, feeding, handling, as well as the general health care of these animals. Some of the information presented is derived from Standard Operating Procedures which have been written by the author. It is hoped that the information presented may assist novice Animal Technicians and zookeepers who may be responsible for the care of these species in an animal research facility or a zoological setting. This work has been made possible under Scientific Licence number SL100342, held by Gary Martinic and issued by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales
Unequal struggle for religion? Town Slaný and The House of Martinic in years 1602-1665
The present study tried to show the change of a collective identity and first the confessional identification of Slaný burgesses in years 1602-1665 in the form of a microanalysis based on approaches of historical anthropology and new social studies. Using the sourcess of the town provenance, church registers, corresponcence of arristocrats and Smečno estate documentation the research focused on counter-reformation and recatholization activities of Lords of Martinic whose primary aim was to convert the non-Catholic burgesses to Catholic religion. The author endeavoured to show the ways of Martinics' appealing to town elites in Slaný, collective memory, communicational techniques within the burgess society and basic elements of their confessional identification. On the other hand the author considered the attitudes which the burgesses took towards the discussed power. He analyzed a question if they tried to face the compulsion and in which way their identity gradually changed. This process was interpreted especially on the change of thinking of Slaný refugees who left to Saxon exile because of counter-reformation
Complementary Split-Ring Resonator for Microwave Heating of µL Volumes in Microwells in Continuous Microfluidics
This work presents the design and evaluation of a planar device for microwave heating of liquids in continuous microfluidics (CMF) made in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). It deals with volumes in the µL range, which are of high interest and relevance to biologists and chemists. The planar heater in this work is conceived around a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) topology that offers a desired electric field direction to—and interaction with—liquids in a microwell. The designed device on a 0.25 mm thick Rogers RO4350B substrate operates at around 2.5 GHz, while a CMF channel and a 2.45 µL microwell are manufactured in PDMS using the casting process. The evaluation of the performance of the designed heater is conducted using a fluorescent dye, Rhodamine B, dissolved in deionized water. Heating measurements are carried out using 1 W of power and the designed device achieves a temperature of 47 °C on a sample volume of 2.45 µL after 20 s of heating. Based on the achieved results, the CSRR topology has a large potential in microwave heating, in addition to the already demonstrated potential in microwave dielectric sensing, all proving the multifunctionality and reusability of single planar microwave-microfluidic devices

Notas Y Comentarios Bibliográficos
This article offers comment by the author on the Patagonian Archipelago as the Final Frontier, as written about in a book by Matthew B. Martinic titled, 'Patagonia Archipelago. The Final Frontier
El presente histórico en la guerra del Golfo
The author describes the decline and end of the Soviet era, that allowed the instauration of a new world order dictated by the U.S.A. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, it disrupted American plans for that region. The First Gulf War ensued and resulted in the defeat of the invader, thus allowing wider American hegemony world wide
A technique for intragastric gavage of radiolabeled liquid cholesterol in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) using a pediatric feeding tube
The author describes a method of intragastric gavage in rabbits using a pediatric feeding tube. Researchers used this technique to administer radiolabeled cholesterol in a pilot study of cholesterol efflux. The author discusses specific considerations for gavaging rabbits, emphasizing occupational safety and rabbit welfare
The use of animals in live-tissue trauma training and military medical research
Uncontrolled hemorrhage is the most common preventable cause of death for soldiers wounded in combat. In live-tissue trauma training (LTTT), animals (mostly goats and pigs) are used to train physicians and paramedical personnel in how to treat severe traumatic injuries, including severe blood loss. Military personnel insist that such realistic training is necessary and has to date saved countless lives of soldiers. Animal rights groups, however, argue that the practice is inhumane and should be replaced with alternative methods. In this essay, the author explains how and why animals are used for LTTT and in military medical research (MMR), as well as why he feels that the continued use of animals for LTTT and MMR is justified. The author hopes to encourage wider discussion of this topic within the scientific, defense and animal welfare circles, leading to further refinements in the welfare and protection of animals used for these important, though often controversial, purposes
Guía para el diseño e implementación de un sistema de gestión de archivos
The document is the product of two years of research and work field with different public institutions of Chile. During that period, the author advised various agencies of State Administration on the design and implementation of their file management systems so that they can become active agents fulfilling the Transparency Law and also, to adjust with the Chilean record regulations. Introduces in detail all the steps needed to design the institutional records management system, considering as a theoretical base the life cycle of documents, as well as the practical aspects that will allow the operation: processes, procedures, technical instruments (classification chart and documents withholding chart or retention schedule, etc.), technological and human resources, as well as indicators to measure the performance of the system. Finally delivers the components and necessary guidelines to implement, and later, evaluate the system desig
La minería aurífera en la región austral americana (1869-1950)
This article presents a complete panoramic vision about the discovery and exploitation of gold in the meridional region of America, from a description of its different mining periods: Las Minas River (1869), Boquerón mountains (1881), Zanja a Pique (1884), Páramo (1887), Sloggett Bay (1887) and Southern Islands (1890). Also, the author provides an account of the commonly named “golden fever”: This is the origin, development and decline of mechanic miners between 1903 and 1908, especially in relation to Tierra del Fuego Island, where the activity generated a lot of frustrations and failures. Likewise, the text describes the development of craft miners before and after 1900, until 1950, when the whole historic auriferous exploitation finished. Lastly, the article reflects and evaluates the historic auriferous production as well as the demographic, economic and politic consequences of this auriferous activity in Magallanes.
