A single-station method for the detection, classification and location of fin whale calls using ocean-bottom seismic stations
No full textPassive seismic monitoring in the oceans uses long-term deployments of Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs). An OBS usually records the three components of ground motion and pressure, typically at 100Hz. This makes the OBS an ideal tool to investigate fin and blue whales that vocalize at frequencies below 45Hz. Previous applications of OBS data to locate whale calls have relied on single channel analyses that disregard the information that is conveyed by the horizontal seismic channels. Recently, Harris, Matias, Thomas, Harwood, and Geissler [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 134, 3522-3535 (2013)] presented a method that used all four channels recorded by one OBS to derive the range and azimuth of fin whale calls. In this work, the detection, classification, and ranging of calls using this four-channel method were further investigated, focusing on methods to increase the accuracy of range estimates to direct path arrivals. Corrections to account for the influences of the sound speed in the water layer and the velocity structure in the top strata of the seabed were considered. The single station method discussed here is best implemented when OBSs have been deployed in deep water on top of seabed strata with low P-wave velocity. These conditions maximize the ability to detect and estimate ranges to fin whale calls.Peer reviewe
Educação cigana: entre-lugares entre escola e comunidade étnica

Programa de Pós-Gradução em EducaçãoO presente trabalho traz a apresentação e análise sobre a etnia cigana, tendo em vista três enfoques principais: O primeiro, relata os principais aspectos da história dos ciganos no mundo e no Brasil. O segundo enfoque, apresenta alguns dispositivos legais da Constituição de 1988 e os atuais processos de interlocução dos ciganos com as Políticas Públicas brasileiras. O terceiro enfoque relata os contextos educativos intra-grupo e algumas reflexões sobre os mesmos. Também apresenta o relato de um estudo de caso, realizado com uma família cigana residente no município de Palhoça/SC/ Brasil, suas idéia sobre educação e que valores atribuem à escola formal e à comunidade étnica. A metodologia de pesquisa consistiu em: revisão bibliográfica; trabalhos de campo e aplicação de entrevistas. Pela própria complexidade que envolve o tema, foi que não optamos por nenhum referencial teórico específico, mas buscamos estabelecer um grupo de autores com os quais nos identificamos, e que, poderiam contribuir com nossas reflexões e inquietações. Foram eles: Alberto Melucci; Cliford Geertz; Homi Bhabha; Paulo Freire; Luiza Cortesão; Márcia Ondina Ferreira; Reinaldo Matias Fleuri; José Marin; Tomaz Tadeu Silva; Paola Falteri; Nadir Esperança Azibeiro e Francesco Susi, dentre outros. De acordo com as observações realizadas constatamos preliminarmente que: A questão da influência das sociedades não-ciganas, na identidade étnica cigana, foi e continua sendo historicamente uma grande preocupação dos ciganos; que em nível mundial, e particularmente no Brasil, já existem políticas públicas para as minorias étnicas, dentre elas a cigana; que os ciganos vêm mantendo uma relação com a escola, mesmo que fragmentada e fragilizada; que apesar dos ciganos reconhecerem a necessidade de freqüentarem a escola como forma de se alfabetizarem, o maior valor a que eles atribuem, é a relação intra-étnica, portanto, a sua própria cultura

Regional Products, Regions' Reputation and Commercial Strategies: A Tale of Two Cheese Suppliers
No full textNetworks of firms producing and selling regional products to domestic and foreign markets are influencing the direction and options of local development. Regional products are embedded in historical tradition and geographic, cultural and social specificity. Most of the local activities are performed by clustered SME's in well defined geographical areas. To study the mechanisms and factors which favour spontaneous development in specific areas and make SME's competitive through cluster development we used case study methodology. An evolutionary perspective of "Casa Matias" and "Casa dos Queijos", two portuguese SME's, is expected to illustrate which key factors triggered the firm's cheese business and, simultaneously, examine organisational practices with particular emphasis on cluster formation and internationalisation process. From this analysis we expected to conceptualise a specific policy scheme to help developing spontaneous entrepreneurship, cooperation between clustered SME's and local collective development.

Para o estudo do tema optou-se pela abordagem descritiva e quantitativa e para a obtenção dos dados coletados foi utilizado o questionário com perguntas fechadas. O questionário foi aplicado aos alunos em questão no mês de março de 2010 e os resultados apontam à necessidade de uma melhor divulgação e interação biblioteca-escola

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Land CSEM impulse responses in simple layered models
No full textWe argue that in a half space model with a single layer, the electric field impulse response at different offsets can be understood physically. Diffusive fields travel along paths like wavefields but are not localised in time. Each event that is measured comes from a path with the least attenuation, which corresponds to early arrival. The most prominent TE mode contribution to the detection of a subsurface layer comes from the coupling of the airwave with the subsurface. The most prominent contribution from the TM mode comes from the path through the resistive layer with almost vertical diffusion paths between the surface and the target. The arrival time of the peak of the event from a conductive layer can be understood from this reasoning. The arrival time of the peak of the event from a resistive layer can be understood from this reasoning when the offset is not too large compared with burial depth of the target layer. These predictions lead to estimates of depth to target layer with an error of less than 5% and the resistivity of the resistive layer of less than 50%.
