A single-station method for the detection, classification and location of fin whale calls using ocean-bottom seismic stations

    No full text
Passive seismic monitoring in the oceans uses long-term deployments of Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs). An OBS usually records the three components of ground motion and pressure, typically at 100Hz. This makes the OBS an ideal tool to investigate fin and blue whales that vocalize at frequencies below 45Hz. Previous applications of OBS data to locate whale calls have relied on single channel analyses that disregard the information that is conveyed by the horizontal seismic channels. Recently, Harris, Matias, Thomas, Harwood, and Geissler [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 134, 3522-3535 (2013)] presented a method that used all four channels recorded by one OBS to derive the range and azimuth of fin whale calls. In this work, the detection, classification, and ranging of calls using this four-channel method were further investigated, focusing on methods to increase the accuracy of range estimates to direct path arrivals. Corrections to account for the influences of the sound speed in the water layer and the velocity structure in the top strata of the seabed were considered. The single station method discussed here is best implemented when OBSs have been deployed in deep water on top of seabed strata with low P-wave velocity. These conditions maximize the ability to detect and estimate ranges to fin whale calls.Peer reviewe

An introduction to the Geodynamic Evolution of the Southernmost Andes: Connections with the Scotia Arc

    No full text
The backbone of this book is the analysis of the relation between the tectonic evolution of the Southernmost Andes and its southern neighbors: Antarctica and the Scotia Sea. The Southernmost Andes comprise the southern bent of the Andean mountains, where they progressively change their strike from the N-S?oriented Southern Patagonian Andes to the E-W?trending Fuegian Andes (Fig. 1). These Andean segments and their corresponding basement, sedimentary basins, magmatic rocks and batholithic belts are linked, even if sometimes elusively, to the evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula and of the islands spread in the southern ocean. The Scotia Sea separating South America and the Antarctic Pe-ninsula (Fig. 1) is only ~30 Myr old, very young, considering a joint geological history of the Southernmost Andes, Patagonia and Antarctica than can be traced back to late Paleozoic times (i.e. 300 Myr or more). Analysis of marine geophysical data in the Scotia Sea (cf. Eagles et al. 2006) and geological data from Tierra del Fuego (Ghiglione et al. 2008) demonstrate that the disconnection of South America and Antarctica started at about 50 Ma. However, oceanic spreading producing the final opening of the Drake Passage, and the consequent strike-slip movements along the North and South Scotia ridges (Fig. 1), occurred just since the Oligocene. Therefore, there is a joint history of Antarctica and South America that was shattered by the opening of the Scotia Sea; the remaining pieces of the puzzle, how can they fit together, and how were they separated from each other are the subjects of this book.Fil: Ghiglione, Matias. A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

    No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Regional Products, Regions' Reputation and Commercial Strategies: A Tale of Two Cheese Suppliers

    No full text
Networks of firms producing and selling regional products to domestic and foreign markets are influencing the direction and options of local development. Regional products are embedded in historical tradition and geographic, cultural and social specificity. Most of the local activities are performed by clustered SME's in well defined geographical areas. To study the mechanisms and factors which favour spontaneous development in specific areas and make SME's competitive through cluster development we used case study methodology. An evolutionary perspective of "Casa Matias" and "Casa dos Queijos", two portuguese SME's, is expected to illustrate which key factors triggered the firm's cheese business and, simultaneously, examine organisational practices with particular emphasis on cluster formation and internationalisation process. From this analysis we expected to conceptualise a specific policy scheme to help developing spontaneous entrepreneurship, cooperation between clustered SME's and local collective development.

Leucine metabolites do not induce changes in phase angle, bioimpedance vector analysis patterns, and strength in resistance trained men

    No full text
We aimed to assess the effects of off-the-shelf leucine metabolite supplements on phase angle (PhA), bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) patterns and strength during an 8-week resistance training protocol. Fifty-three male participants were allocated into 4 groups: alpha-hydroxyisocaproic acid (n =12, age = 30.9 +/- 9.3 years), beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate free acid (n =12, age = 31.0 +/- 9.3 years), calcium beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (n =15, age = 32.1 +/- 5.2 years) or placebo (n =14, age = 28.9 +/- 6.6 years). Bioimpedance parameters and 1-repetition maximum (IRM) for back squat and bench press were assessed at baseline and at the end of weeks 4 and 8. Additionally, fat-free mass and fat mass were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. No statistically group by time interactions were found, even adjusting for age. PhA and vector did not change over the training period, while time-dependent increases were observed for 1RM back squat and 1RM bench press. A direct association was observed between PhA and 1RM bench press changes (whole sample), while PhA and strength were correlated throughout the study, even when adjusting for fat-free mass and percentage of fat mass. Leucine metabolites have no effect on PhA, BIVA patterns or strength during an 8-week resistance training program, in resistance trained subjects.Novelty:Supplementation with leucine metabolites is not a supplementation strategy that improves bioelectrical phase angle, cellular health, and strength after an 8-week resistance training program. When constuning a high protein diet, none of the alpha-hydroxyisocaproic acid, beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate free acid, and calcium beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate metabolites resulted in an ergogenic effect in resistance trained men
