    TikTok as a data gathering space: the case of grandchildren and grandparents during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Grandparents and grandchildren benefit from a relationship with each other. However, in times of crisis and social distancing it is challenging to maintain this relationship. In this paper, we reflect on TikTok as a data gathering platform that might help designers to capture and ideate on remote communication design across generations. We report on a study that aimed to learn about how grandparents and grandchildren perform their relationship on TikTok in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.     Grandparenting and intergenerational emotional closeness : grandparents and their teenage and emerging adult grandchildren's perceptions

    La proximité émotionnelle entre les grands-parents et leurs petits-enfants adolescents et jeunes adultes est importante pour les deux générations. Cependant la grand-parentalité est encore peu étudiée dans le contexte français. Ce travail doctoral a comme objectif de proposer une compréhension approfondie de la proximité émotionnelle entre les grands-parents et leurs petits-enfants adolescents et adultes émergents sous le prisme de la théorie de la solidarité intergénérationnelle et de la théorie de l'échange d'affection. Ce travail de thèse est divisé en quatre parties permettant de mieux appréhender la grand-parentalité. La première partie porte sur les attentes concernant le rôle de grand-parent, la deuxième partie porte sur les facteurs influençant la proximité émotionnelle dans la relation grand-parent-petit-enfant, la troisième partie porte sur l'évolution de la grand-parentalité aux différents âges de la vie du petit-enfant et en particulier à l'âge adulte émergent, et enfin, la quatrième partie porte sur les manifestations de cette relation intergénérationnelle. Une réflexion autour de recommandations pratiques et de perspectives future est proposée.Emotional closeness between grandparents and their adolescent and emerging adult grandchildren is important for the two generations. Notwithstanding, grandparenting is understudied in the French context. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive understanding of emotional closeness in the relationship between grandparents and their adolescent and emerging adult grandchildren, under the scope of the intergenerational solidarity framework and Affection Exchange Theory. This thesis is divided in four parts allowing a better understanding of intergenerational relationships in the context of grandparenthood. The first part addresses the expectations concerning the role of grandparents, the second part deals with factors influencing emotional closeness in the grandparent-grandchild relationship, the third part addresses evolutions in grandparenting across the lifespan of grandchildren and especially during emerging adulthood, and lastly, the fourth part addresses the manifestations of this intergenerational relationship. The first part is dedicated to an experimental study about adolescents' expectations about what good grandparents should teach them, and the French translation and validation of the Ideal Grandparent Scale. The second part consists of a systematic review of emotional closeness between grandparents and their adolescent and emerging adult grandchildren, and in an experimental study about the similarity in personality traits, affectionate communication and emotional closeness between grandparents and their adolescent and emerging adult grandchildren from the grandchildren's perspective. The third part is divided in a scoping review on the use of the intergenerational solidarity framework in grandparenting studies, and a qualitative study with grandparent and emerging adult dyads on their perception of their emotional closeness. The fourth part is divided in the translation and validation of the Grandchildren's Received Affection Scale in French, and in a social media content analyses on TikTok during the Covid-19 pandemic. A reflection on practical recommendations and future perspectives is proposed

    “If She’s Sad, I’m Sad Too” Emotional Closeness Between French Grandparents and Emerging Adult Grandchildren: Between Emotional Bonding and Emotional Worries

    International audienceThe present study examines emotional closeness between French grandparents and their emerging adult grandchildren. The present study explores facets of the grandparent-grandchild relationship that have not been extensively investigated. It highlights the importance of the grandchildren's relationship with their grandparents as they reach adulthood and the facets of intergenerational emotional closeness during this period of transition. Semi-structured interviews were conducted individually with 13 grandparents and their emerging adult grandchildren. Four themes were extracted from the thematic analysis of the interviews (emotional bonding; sharing identity, values, and personality; emotional worries and concerns about illness and death; adult role acquisition). The study reveals the depth of the grandparent-emerging adult-grandchild relationship, which is a source not only of love, support, and companionship in their daily life, but also of worries about the future. This study also identifies some hitherto unexplored facets that demonstrate the complexity of this relationship as grandchildren become adults

    Explorer le rôle des grands-parents dans les familles d'enfants avec autisme : Perspective française

    International audienceGrandparents are recognized as being an important source of family support and has having a role towards the maintain of family balance, however, the experience and role of grandparents within families with an autistic child are less defined in the literature. The aim of this study is to explore the role, emotional experience and needs of grandparents of a child with ASD. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 French grandparents (eight grandmothers, two grandfathers) of a child with ASD aged between 4 and 14 years old (eight boys, two girls). Using a thematic analyses, we identified ten themes, two related to the role of grandparents (i.e., acting as a scaffold, developing awareness to the particularities of autism, reinvesting parenthood, helping the grandchild developing socio-emotional skills), two related to the needs of grandparents (i.e., need for competence, need for relatedness), and four related to the emotional experience of grandparents (i.e., from sanguinity to despair, anger, sadness, Kindenschema). Our study underlines the importance of considering the role of grandparents in the lives of families of children with autism and to better support them by acknowledging their crucial role in the family dynamics

    Using the intergenerational solidarity framework to understand the grandparent–grandchild relationship: A scoping review

    International audienceIntergenerational interactions and exchange are major components of grandparenting, and the present study sought to examine how the intergenerational solidarity framework has been used to investigate grandparenting practices across the lifespan and in different cultures. This framework is widely used across cultures and provides a basis to discuss the future of grandparenting research, considering cultural intermingling and changes in society. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched three databases (PsycInfo, PubMed, Web of Science). Finally, 42 empirical studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in this scoping review. They were published between 1991 and 2020 and assessed intergenerational solidarity between grandparents and their grandchildren. Our findings show that research on grandparenting based on the intergenerational solidarity framework has increased in the last 30 years, and that this model provides a comprehensive approach to studying grandparenting across the lifespan in different cultures. The present study identified cross-cultural differences in the prevalence of the types of intergenerational solidarity. Affectual solidarity was shown to be the most studied dimension of intergenerational solidarity in North America, Europe and Israel while normative solidarity was the most represented in Asian studies. The only Australian study investigated affectual and functional solidarity. This model is thus suitable for studying grandparenting, but further studies are needed to investigate changes in intergenerational solidarity between grandparents and their grandchildren at different stages of development and account for cultural specificities

    L’échec du mythe de la virilité dans The Ultras d’Eoin McNamee

    Dans cet article, je me propose d’analyser les procédés d’écriture qui permettent à Eoin McNamee dans The Ultras de dévoiler l’échec de la tentative de rétablissement d’une virilité mythifiée. Par le réinvestissement d’une figure controversée de l’histoire des Troubles nord-irlandais, Robert Nairac, l’auteur souligne la persistance d’un mythe de la virilité dont le deuil entamé ne semble pas fini. Les techniques d’estompage et la juxtaposition des points de vue brouillent non seulement les frontières entre réalité et fiction, mais attestent aussi du caractère fictif du réel. En révélant la hantise du présent par le passé, le roman met en question les récits officiels de la période post-conflit nord-irlandaise, fait surgir l’expérience traumatique et déboulonne l’optimisme de la « propagande de la paix », pour reprendre l’expression de McLaughlin et Baker.This article examines the writing strategies used by Eoin McNamee in The Ultras to unveil the failure of the attempt to rebuild a mythologised manliness. The reshaping of a controversial figure of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Robert Nairac, enables the author to underline the persistence of a myth of manliness, of which the period of mourning is not yet completed. By shading the realism of the novel and by intertwining several points of view, McNamee is not merely blurring the lines between facts and fiction, but also revealing the fictional aspect of reality. The obsessive nature of the characters’ preoccupations with the past questions the post-Troubles official narratives and leads to the eruption of the trauma eschewed by the optimism of the hegemonic discourse, which flourished after the peace agreement in Northern Ireland – a discourse dubbed the ‘propaganda of peace’ by McLaughlin and Baker
