O valor das ações por dever

    No full text
In this concluding graduation essay, I intend to clarify what is the worth of actions done from duty for Immanuel Kant in his book Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. Such clarification depends mainly on the understanding of how the author defines the concept of duty. To Kant, morality is a matter that concerns the absolute necessity of what a human being ought to do without exception, that is, what are the duties of such a being. Acting from duty, therefore, is the only way for a human being to act morally

DYNAMICS OF THE NOVA SCOTIA CURRENT AND LINKAGES WITH ATLANTIC SALMON MIGRATION PATTERNS OVER THE SCOTIAN SHELF

Over the 2008-2015 period, the Ocean Tracking Network provided unprecedented spatiotemporal coverage of the hydrography and currents along the Halifax Line (HL) on the Scotian Shelf, using several different monitoring techniques (e.g., moorings and underwater gliders). The observations are analyzed here to provide an extensive description of the physical oceanographic conditions over the Scotian Shelf, as well as the spatiotemporal variability observed over this period. The analysis of observations identifies the distribution of key water masses present along the HL. The water mass analysis demonstrates that the large warming event observed in 2012 was primarily due to the advection of already anomalously warm water from the Shelf Slope. The ocean circulation along the HL during this period is examined, with a focus on the seasonal cycle and the inter-annual variability of the Nova Scotia Current (NSC). A conceptual model is developed to investigate the main mechanisms driving the NSC. The relative roles of buoyancy-driven and wind-driven flows to the NSC are estimated at the HL to study the seasonal variability of the forcing and the relative importance of these two mechanisms in driving the NSC. Generally, the NSC is dominated by the buoyancy-driven component of the current, throughout the year and at all four transects between Cabot Strait and Cape Sable. The relative contributions of buoyancy and alongshore surface winds to the NSC’s dynamics are remarkably similar across transects having the same coastal orientation, but significantly vary where the coastline orientation changes. The newly-acquired oceanographic knowledge along the HL is also combined with acoustic detections of Atlantic salmon postsmolts coming from the Penobscot River to study the temporal and spatial distribution of the migrating fish in the context of oceanographic conditions. It is shown that postsmolts tend to be in greater abundance in the colder and fresher coastal water mass, while the abundance is not related to the direction or magnitude of local currents

A Configuração do Conceito de Dever Fundamental de pagar Impostos na Constituição Federal de 1988

The Portuguese author José Casalta Nabais, at the end of the last century, made a significant contribution to understanding contemporary constitutional tax State: the concept of fundamental duty to pay taxes. Items in historic process that led to the formation of the particularities of the Brazilian tax State, this monograph is a summary of the concept of fundamental duty to pay taxes and, also, the possibility of their use by Brazilian doctrine, in the light of the principles of tax allocation of jurisdiction of the Federal Constitution of 1988. In Brazilian doctrine Ives Gandra da Silva Martins advocates the concept of tribute as a legal standard of social rejection. However, this design is not unanimous. In the opposite direction, Heleno Taveira Tôrres believes that the duty to pay tribute, in Brazil, derives from own tax jurisdiction constitutional breakdown. And, also, Ricardo Lobo Torres, among other things, defines fundamental duty tribute. Thus, this work aims to examine the possibility of application of the concept of fundamental duty to pay taxes, prepared by José Casalta Nabais, from their seizure of the 1988 Brazilian Constitution itself and in the light of already prepared by several national doctrinators.O autor português José Casalta Nabais, ao final do século passado, elaborou uma significativa contribuição para a compreensão constitucional do Estado Fiscal contemporâneo: o conceito de dever fundamental de pagar impostos.

    Archiving feminism: Papers, politics, posterity

This article explores the process of securing for the National Library of Australia Merle Thornton's personal archive, which documents decades of feminist activism. Thornton, a noted figure in Australia's early second-wave women's movement, is best known as one of the "Bar Room Suffragettes," who in 1965 chained themselves to the front bar of the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane, demanding women's right to drink alongside men in public bars. In reflecting on the process of securing these papers, the author poses a series of questions concerning archives and aging, the folding of personal history into collective memory, and the role of archival source material in determining the conditions of possibility for writing histories of feminist activism. Further, in reflecting on her own role in the project, the author asks whether it is possible to perform the work of "archiving feminism" on radically non-nostalgic terms that challenge the discursive positioning of second-wave activists as a generation whose political legacy is threatened by a contemporary "culture of forgetting." Finally, the article necessarily engages with the tension between the archive as a memory device and the archive's entanglement with anticipation and futurity

The Black Death in Hebrew Literature: Ha-Maamar Be-Qaddaat Ha-Dever (Treatise on Pestilential Fever)

AbstractHa-Maamar be-Qaddaat ha-dever (Treatise on Pestilential Fever), composed by an anonymous author, is one of several treatises devoted to the subject of plague that exist in Hebrew literature. The treatise is basically a concise regimen of health as it was common throughout the Middle Ages that has been adapted to the special case of the plague and that has been supplemented with a final section of remedies for the time of the plague. Although we do not know the name of the author nor where and when he lived and composed the treatise, we can draw some conclusions from the foreign, non-Hebrew terminology used in the treatise. As several of the foreign terms used for the different plants and remedies are in old Spanish, it seems reasonable to suppose that the author hailed from the Iberian Peninsula and possibly composed the treatise there as well. The frequent quotations in the supplementary section 21 from Spanish Islamic physicians like Ibn Rushd, al-Zahrāwī, al-Ghāfiqī and above all Ibn Zuhr also confirm such a supposition. </jats:sec

Sexism in Teaching Spanish: Linguistic Discrimination is Sometimes Unconscious

    No full text
The Spanish language is becoming more flexible in creating feminine forms for occupational names that correspond with the already existing masculine terms. However, there has been some resistance among Spaniards with regard to using feminine forms like física to refer to a physicist who is a woman. Similarly, there have been objections to química (chemist, chemistry), música (musician, music), and others because, some say, such terms are ambiguous and confusing with regard to the professions. Do words and the way they are used significantly affect their meaning? The author discusses this question by highlighting linguistic discrimination in Spanish that is sometimes unconscious. However, such usage negatively affects perceptions about women and their role in society. Increasing the awareness of students about the pervasive nature of sexism in language would help to promote equitable treatment of the sexes in both oral and written communication. The author gives examples of sexism in the use of language, and explains specific ways in which society uses language at the most basic level to relegate women to an inferior status. Lastly, the author suggests ways in which professors of Spanish (and English) can address sex-bias in language communication while still remaining faithful to fundamental language structures

Para tanto, a pesquisa se servirá do exame da bibliografia disponível, principalmente de contribuições propostas por autores brasileiros, bem assim da coleta de alguns julgados pertinentes que evidenciam os temas em debate e aclaram a temática abordadaThe present monography will intent to discuss about fundamental aspects related to judicial reasoning, particularly in new view implemented by the civil code procedure of 2015, which has a strong and clear guideline referred to observance of duty of motivation. The relevance to the present study it happens on the account of terrible regulation given by many judges and law courts who simply removed from the jurisdictional his right to know, effectively, the motivation taked into consideration by the judging entity. After examining development´s civil procedure system, as well as principles which impact directly onto the obligation to state reasons, this study will treat about main innovations existing in civil code procedure of 2015 and relationed to the judicial motivation. For this purpose, this survey will introduce the available bibliography, specially with Brazilian author´s contributions, as well as certain of legal decisions, applicable and pertinent to the subject propose
