New post graduate students' orientation programme
Get PDFOn 13th September 2014, the Centre of Graduate Studies, UiTM Sarawak organized an orientation programme to welcome all new students for the September 2014 intake. The programme was held at the Grand Margarita Hotel, Kuching. 22 new students for research and coursework programmes turned up to register for the upcoming new semester. The programme, which started with a networking lunch, gave an opportunity for the new students, coordinators and the Post Graduate Centre staff to get to know each other. Registration took place at about 2 pm and students were sent to attend a programme briefing by the respective coordinators for research and coursework. The Research Programme briefing was conducted by Dr Corina Joseph while programme briefings for coursework were conducted by Siti Huzaimah and Vloreen Nity Mathew. The briefing highlighted Important dates and requirements for students to complete the programme. The programme ended at 6.00 p.m. with a message from the Head of Post Graduate Centre, Associate Professor Dr. Firdaus Abdullah
Undergraduate-community engagement: evidence from UiTM Sarawak / Ellen Chung and Vloreen Nity Mathew
Get PDFUndergraduate-Community engagement is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs. In Malaysia, most undergraduates have at one point or another taken part in community engagement activities. However, the outcome of participating in community engagement has not been properly measured. This study was conducted to investigate the benefits undergraduates gain as a result of community engagement experience, as there is limited studies done in the Malaysian context. This study adopted Student Community Engagement Benefits Questionnaire (SCEBQ) by Chung and Coates (2016). SCEBQ has four benefit constructs, namely career skills, diversity skills, interpersonal skills and civic skills. A total of 143 responses were analysed and results showed that female undergraduates, those who participated in voluntary projects and respondents between 21 to 23 years old reported higher mean gains across the four benefit constructs. Nevertheless, these mean gains did not show any statistically significant difference between gender, community engagement projects types, except age groups. The study is important as it lays the foundation in the process of creating a better understanding of what students learn outside the classroom and it contributes to the practical knowledge of undergraduate-community engagement experience in the context of Malaysian higher education

Bertempat di UiTM Cawangan Sarawak, Kampus Samarahan 2, seramai 99 orang pelajar dan 19 orang guru pengiring dari 10 buah sekolah dari Samarahan, Serian, Lundu dan Kuching, 22 fasilitators dari pelajar diploma UiTM Cawangan Sarawak dan 50 pensyarah telah terlibat dengan aktiviti ini secara langsung

Get PDFHotel booking nowadays has been made easy with technology. Customers from all over the world have better advantage as reviews by previous customers assisting them in their final purchase decisions. Satisfied customers provide positive reviews while dissatisfied ones would share negative reviews on elements contributing to the unpleasant experience. As many other studies mainly focused on enhancing customers’ satisfactions, this research focuses on identifying the elements of dissatisfaction (or sometimes regarded as the dissatisfier). Generally, negative elements always have a greater impact on customers’ purchase intention as compared to the positive elements.Hence, identifying the factors that result in the customers’ dissatisfaction is vital. A total of 22 hotels with rating 2 and below on booking.com was analysed in the research. It was found that the dissatisfiers identified in the research are of these categories; room,hotel staff, services and environment. The findings show that the highest contributor to dissatisfaction is the “room”. This indicates that customers will be more satisfied if their hotel rooms are properly maintained. The poor rating hotel demand was also analysed. More results and important findings are discussed in the later section of this report. The results and findings of the research are useful to hotel operators in order to offer better services to customers
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
