    „Cyrk jak ta lala”. O lalkach w cyrku i o cyrku z lalkami

    No full text
Puppetry art it is not only a puppet theatre, but also a puppet cabaret, a variété and a puppet circus. Moreover, the article also discusses performances made by sculptor Alexander Calder which combine circus inspirations and animated objects. The author tries to explain reasons for preparing puppet circus performances and the use of circus inspirations and aesthetics in theatre performances

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Cyrkowy hołd dla X muzy. Cirque du Soleil i spektakl Iris

    No full text
The aim of the author is to describe the process of transcription of the history of the cinema into the language of the circus. The artists from Cirque du Soleil showed a performance Iris inspired by the legendary films such as Gone with the Wind and Titanic. Combining dance, acrobatics, video, filmed live sequences and animations, the performance takes the audience on a journey through the history of the cinema and a diverse range of film genres, introducing them to the world of filmmaking. Moving from illustration to animation, from the blackand- white picture to color, viewers can follow the construction and deconstruction of the film art as a discipline and a peculiar way of crossing the boundaries of what is possible. The author puts forward a hypothesis that the show Iris aims to evoke feelings that accompanied first cinema viewers. It refers to the nostalgia for the time when the cinema was like a circus. It is worth remembering that the first screenings were of the fair nature, similar to the classic circus. Today both the cinema and circus have the status of art

Heterogeneous Class Size Effects: New Evidence from a Panel of University Students

Using administrative records from a UK university, we present evidence on the effects of class size on students' test scores. We estimate non-linear class size effects controlling for unobserved heterogen-eity of students and faculty. We find that: (i) at the average class size, the effect size is -0.108; (ii) the effect size is negative and significant only for the smallest and largest ranges of class sizes and zero in intermediate class sizes; (iii) students at the top of the test score distribution are more affected by changes in class size, especially when class sizes are very large. © The Author(s). The studied monograph concerns attempts at the transfer of modern, American ideals of childhood and the paradigms and norms of family life to Poland. Protective and pedagogic activities based on the rules of “modern philanthropy” are presented in a very noteworthy way, although the author does not employ numerous valuable studies and theoretic and methodological conceptions from Polish scholars.

The final degree project you are going to see below is a project that looks at how books by author and illustrator Olga de Dios can be worked on in primary school classrooms. Considering the book as an artistic object at an elementary level. Besides presenting the author and illustrator, introducing her, and seeing the values she transmits, we would also read four of her works in the classroom, such as: "Leotolda”, "In the family", "Three-Eyed Frog", and "Yellow Bird.". All this, in addition to the creation of a class notebook in which some of his characters from her work would be colored following guidelines at the curricular level. We would also go out to the local library, where in addition to receiving a non-formal education, it would make it a little easier for us to enter the world of children's illustration, where inside, the professional in charge will guide us through the books which will be in the library. And, to conclude, we would make a book created by the students, where following some guidelines established by Olga de Dios in her book "Leotolda" we would look for feedback by trying to contact her. In this way, we would close the cycle that we started by presenting her as an author and illustrator, and we would explore where the limit of creativity of the students themselves is

Jeanne d’Arc: Was There a Prophet? Reflections on the Book of O. Togoyeva “The Heretic, who Became Holy”

    No full text
This article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of O. I. Togoeva, proposed by her as a research method in the monograph «The heretic, who became holy». In it, the author attempted to prove that the national heroine of France, Jeanne d’Arc, was a visionary, a prophet who had predicted individual events of the Hundred Years War. Since contemporaries were not sure who its prophecies come from - from God or from the Devil, we had to perform several procedures using the «discretio spirituum» method, that is, the « discerning of spirits». The first two, held in Chinon and in Poitiers in the spring of 1429, ended with the acquittal of Joan of Arc, the third, completed in Rouen in 1431, with an accusation, and finally, the last - in 1450-1456, - restoration of a good name. One may agree that some contemporaries considered Joan of Arc as a prophet or presented her as a prophet, but the fact that the Maid of Orleans really was a prophet remained unproved. The article shows that other interpretations of the mission of Joan of Arc and her actions are possible, including an explanation of her actions not as a prophet, but as one of the captains of the royal army

The influence of subgrid-scale modelling on the performance of a new non-equilibrium wall-model for large-eddy simulation

    No full text
The computational cost of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) rapidly becomes prohibitive with increasing Reynolds number. Wall-modelled LES attempts to significantly reduce the computational cost of simulating wall-bounded turbulent flows by modelling the effect of the near-wall small-scale motions, rather than fully or partially resolving them. The present study concentrates on a new wall-model that is able to predict fluctuating wall-shear stress given a large-scale velocity input. The velocity input for the model is affected by the choice of subgrid-scale (SGS) model. Therefore, this study also focusses on the impact of the SGS-model on the distribution of quantities at the wall. Results show that the new wall-model is able to resolve more of the wall shear-stress variance than a standard wall-model; and that the SGS-model affects the distribution of fluctuations of both wall-shear stress and wall-pressure

Self-archiving practice and the influence of publisher policies in the social sciences

    No full text
Authors in different disciplines exhibit very different behaviours on the so-called ‘green’ road to open access, i.e. self-archiving. This study looks at the self-archiving behaviour of authors publishing in leading journals in six social science disciplines. It tests the hypothesis that authors are self-archiving according to the norms of their respective disciplines rather than following self-archiving policies of publishers, and that, as a result, they are self-archiving significant numbers of publisher PDF versions. It finds significant levels of self-archiving, as well as significant self-archiving of the publisher PDF version, in all the disciplines investigated. Publishers’ self-archiving policies have no influence on author self-archiving practice

Współczesne oblicza rządomyślności Mityczna podróż bohatera i troska o siebie we współczesnej „literaturze sukcesu”

W zakończeniu zawarte zostały wnioski płynące z analizy oraz dalsze możliwości badań nad „literaturą sukcesu”.The aim of the article is to reconstruct the depictions of work and entrepreneurship implicit in the “literature of success”. There are elements of the mythical hero’s journey and practices related to care of the self in this kind of literature, which the author treats as two dimensions of governmentality. First, the author presents the theoretical framework of analysis determined by two key elements. On the one hand, these are the categories taken from the studies of narrative structures provided by such authors as Otto Rank, Lord Raglan and Joseph Campbell. On the other, there are Foucault’s late works of governmentality and care of the self. In the subsequent passage the author proposes a preliminary analysis of the basic dimensions of the mythical elements present in the selected texts. In the last part of the article, the author presents conclusions and points out further possibilities for research on the contemporary “success literature
