Cultural life and printed books during the reign of Matei Basarab
In the first half of the 17th century, the crucial time for Romanian culture, the Wallachian throne was occupied by Matei Basarab (1632-1654), a descendant of the brilliant Basarab dynasty, who played an important role in the political development of Muntenia and is associated with some illustrious names in the religious and cultural life of the country. He inherited from his ancestors the zeal for religion and culture and was going to establish churches, schools, and in the first place - printing houses. With the assistance of the Metropolitan of Kiev Peter Mohyla, who had made Ukraine the center of Orthodox culture, he renewed the beautiful tradition of distribution of religious books that originated in the sixteenth century. An important role in the culture of the time of Matei Basarab played the famous scribe Udrişte Năsturel and his sister Princess Elina. The printing activity at this time known as the „golden age" of Romanian culture was flourishing.
In printing centers of Câmpulung Muscel, Govora, the Dealu Monastery, and the Archdiocese of Târgovişte there had been printing 10 titles of books in Slavonic as well as translated books in Romanian. The first Romanian book printed under the reign of Matei Basarab was Pravila de la Govora (1640). Four years later, at the Dealu Monastery there was printed the book Evanghelia învătăţoare, the text of which is slightly different from Cazania lui Varlaam. At the printing house of Târgovişte there were printed:
Pogribania preotilor (1650), Mistyrio or Sacrament (1651), Târnosanie, and Îndreptarea legii (1652). The last book has a special significance in the history of the old Romanian literature and is also known as Pravila cea Mare a lui Matei Basarab (The Great Code of Matei Basarab) - a collection of civil and ecclesiastical laws, more complete than the Code of Vasile Lupu. Pravila cea Mare was widely spread all over the Romanian territories, especially in Transylvania, being demanded until the early nineteenth century. Circulation of printed book led to the unity of language and consciousness of the Romanian people

Existence of quasicrystals and universal stable sampling and interpolation in LCA groups
We characterize all the locally compact abelian (LCA) groups that contain quasicrystals (a class of model sets). Moreover, we describe all possible quasicrystals in the group constructing an appropriate lattice associated with the cut and project scheme that produces it. On the other hand, if an LCA group G admits a simple quasicrystal, we prove that recent results of Meyer and Matei for the case of the Euclidean space R^n can be extended to G. More precisely, we prove that simple quasicrystals are universal sets of stable sampling and universal sets of stable interpolation in generalized Paley-Wiener spaces.Fil: Agora, Elona. Neagoe Basarab – modelul „omului desăvârșit și întreg”
This article is about the teachings of Neagoe Basarab in regards to the behavior of the future ruler. They are presented as a manual for practical morals where the orthodox faith intertwines with the bravery, merging the attributes of the Saint with those of the Hero. The religious significances of this moral code can be found under double appearance, for both division of the virtues (“Indwelling of God”, fasting, patience, love, gentleness, humility) and meeting of sins (lack of moderation in regards to gastronomy, drinking, gossiping, laughter and women, believed to be behind the many sins). Besides the theological instruction, the teachings of Neagoe Basarab puts into the foreground a moralist who knows the pitfalls and subtleties of the language, the finesse of meditation and the skill to push ideas to metaphysics. After Acad. Eugen Simion had commented the discursive levels of the chapters devoted to medieval diplomacy and art of the adorned speech (the parables and biblical parables), in the third part of this study the author focuses on the general meanings of the Teachings … Along with other specialists (Dan Zamfirescu, G. Mihăilă), the author believes that the paternity of the work belongs to Neagoe Basarab – even if specialists’ talks remain open – and this work, written in a liturgical language and translated into Romanian after a century, it has to be added to Romanian literary heritage. This real treatise – with teachings addressed to those who aspire to become fulfilled and upright people – does not avoid any of the great virtues of the ruler (in which Neagoe Basarab embodies the heroism and sanctity vocations) and it is our first masterpiece
GPS for structural health monitoring: A case study on the Basarab overpass cable-stayed bridge
The Basarab cable-stayed bridge is a newly built structure in Bucharest, Romania, which was inaugurated in June 2011. Before the oficial opening, in order to assure its qualification for trafic, it had to pass several loading tests with convoys of trucks and trams. For this, besides a priori evaluation using the Finite Element Method (FEM), levelling and acceleration measurements were made to identify vertical displacements, as well as vibration frequencies of the bridge. The three-day loading trial of the bridge represented a good opportunity for setting-up a GPS campaign for structural monitoring of the Basarab bridge. Taking advantage of the redundancy obtained via simultaneous multi-sensor measurements, it was possible to compare and validate the GPS estimated displacements with both FEM and levelling. Moreover, the dynamic behaviour of the bridge during a dynamic loading test was evaluated using a 20 Hz GPS observation rate and validated afterwards with vibration frequency estimates from acceleration time series. Along with simulations (FEM) and laboratory tests, the in situ monitoring of a structure has a particular importance in establishing the safety of a newly-built structure. Furthermore, in some cases permanent monitoring is needed for safety and economic reasons, especially for strategic structures such as dams and bridges. GPS technology can satisfy this request due to its real-time processing capability and thus it can be looked upon as a new and promising tool for dynamic evaluation of engineering structures. In this contribution we have also assessed the performance of GPS with regard to accuracy and false alarm probability demands for the continuous monitoring of the Basarab cable-stayed bridge.Geoscience & Remote SensingCivil Engineering and Geoscience
