Motherhood and Memory in Novels Please Look After Mom and The Joy Luck Club
Korean author Kyung-sook Shin and Chinese-American author Amy Tan in their novels Please, Look After Mom! and The Joy Luck Club, respectively, analyze problematic relationships between mothers and their daughters as well as their generational and cultural conflicts. Although the causes of these conflicts are similar, the manner in which the conflicts have been resolved manifests itself differently in the respective novels. By merging the voices of mothers and daughters in their novels, Tan and Shin show they have much more in common than one could expect. In spite of all differences, there is a lot that connects them. Tan believes that it is genetics that wins in the end and, therefore, she believes she can represent her mother. For Shin, mothers are both needed and essential, although their daughters cannot understand it in the beginning. Therefore, the initial conflicts between mothers and daughters in their novels end up with reconciliation and understanding, although it happens too late for some of the mothers
"WAR ON TERROR AND ITS IMPACT ON AMERICAN SOCIETY"
September 11, 2001 attacks are a crucial event that shaped the contemporary American reality. The attacks left a deep emotional scar and altered to a great extent the socio-political image of the United States of America. The American leadership did not wait for too long to provide an answer; Bush's doctrine of not giving in to terrorism was unified in a series od regulations and military operations called the War on terror. The War on terror has generated laws that decreased the probability of renewed attacks, but has also compromised basic human liberties. The polls that were conducted on annual basis after the attacks reaffirm the ambivalent stands of the American nation towards the introduced norms, and show that the public support for military intervention decreased throughout the years. Furthermore, a materialization of the effect of 9/11 attacks is the growing number of hate crimes targeted at the Muslim part of the American population. The analysis of the above presented attitudes and facts demonstrates that today, almost two decades after the attacks, the consequences of War on terror still form a great part of American every-day life.
VLADIMIR NABOKOV'S "LOLITA": A SATIRICAL TAKE ON FREUD'S PSYCHOANALYSIS
Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita became a worldwide phenomenon after its publication in
1955. It is a novel about loss, love and manipulation presented by a charming yet morally
corrupted and cruel narrator whose flawed but carefully brought out recollection quickly
captures the reader’s attention. Lolita’s painful journey intertwined with the protagonist
reveals symbolism associated with psychoanalysis which effectively turns the novel into a
satire of Freud and his theory. Nabokov’s story attempts to ridicule aspects of the
psychoanalytic doctrine yet his style also indicates a certain type of admiration for Freud’s
theory. The novel reflects Freud’s discourse but also gives us a new perspective on the theory
whose strong influence changed the course of history.
1955. godine. To je roman o gubitku, ljubavi i manipulaciji kojeg prezentira šarmantni no i
moralno iskvareni i okrutni pripovjedač čija nepotpuna no pažljivo iznesena sjećanja brzo
njegove teorije. Nabokovova priča nastoji ismijavati aspekte psihoanalitičke doktrine no
njegov stil također pokazuje određenu vrstu divljenja za Freudovu teoriju. Roman odražava
Freudov diskurs no također nam daje novu perspektivu na teoriju čiji je snažan utjecaj
promjenio tok povijest
The Theme of identity in Julie Otsuka’s novels
This paper explores the theme of identity in Julie Otsuka’s novels When the Emperor Was Divine and The Buddha in the Attic, with a particular focus on the transformation of identity among Japanese migrants in America. Using a comparative analytical approach, the paper examines how identity is shaped, lost, altered and reclaimed across generations of Japanese Americans. In The Buddha in the Attic, Otsuka traces the lives of Japanese women who arrive in America as “picture brides” in the early 20th century, confronting pressures of assimilation, cultural dislocation and gender roles. The novel illustrates the complete erasure of their original identity in the face of the challenges of a new life in America. When the Emperor Was Divine shifts attention to the internment of a Japanese American family during World War II, portraying the deep fragmentation of identity caused by war, racism and internment. The paper also draws on the insights of scholars and academics such as Miyoko Kudo, Warren Kidd, Ronald Takaki, Elaine Kim, Cosmic Tal and Benson Tong, who further contextualize the fundamental components of identity within migration and cultural formation. The theme of identity is closely connected to questions of community, belonging, gender and intergenerational differences, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of displacement and internment. Otsuka’s use of collective narration further emphasizes the fragmented and communal nature of identity. Ultimately, the study reveals how Otsuka’s characters undergo a painful process of adapting to a new sense of self, balancing loss and resilience as they struggle to rediscover who they are amid various external pressures.Ovaj rad istražuje temu identiteta u novelama Julie Otsuke When the Emperor Was Divine i The Buddha in the Attic, s naglaskom na promjenu identiteta japanskih migranata u Americi.
U The Buddha in the Attic, Otsuka prati živote japanskih žena koje dolaze u Ameriku kao “picture brides” te početkom 20. stoljeća suočavaju se s pritiscima prilagodbe, kulturnog raseljavanja te rodnih uloga. Novela prikazuje potpuno gubljenje njihovog izvornog identiteta uslijed izazova novog života u Americi. When the Emperor Was Divine usmjerava pažnju na zarobljavanje u logor japansko-američke obitelji tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata, prikazujući duboku fragmentaciju njihovog identiteta uzrokovanu ratom, rasizmom i prisilnim premještajem. Rad također uključuje perspektive različitih istraživača, profesora i akademika poput Miyoko Kudo, Warren Kidda, Ronalda Takakija, Elaine Kim, Cosmica Tala i Bensona Tonga, koji dodatno objašnjavaju temeljne komponente identiteta u kontekstu migracije i kulturnog oblikovanja. Tema identiteta povezuje se s pitanjima zajednice, pripadnosti, roda i međugeneracijskih razlika, naglašavajući emocionalne i psihološke posljedice raseljavanja i zarobljavanje u logore. Otsukino korištenje kolektivne naracije dodatno ističe fragmentiranost i kolektivnu prirodu identiteta. Na kraju, istraživanje pokazuje kako Otsukini likovi prolaze kroz bolan proces prilagodbe novom identitetu, balansirajući gubitak i otpornost te pokušavajući pronaći sebe unatoč različitim pritiscima
Psihologija kapitalizma u djelu Mark Fishera te književnim distopijama
To understand the world, one must first understand the people that inhabit it and the system that they live in. Researching what is hidden behind the stage of the world, society and humans is a complex yet necessary path that can provide knowledge compulsory for planning change. Delving into the reality of capitalism and the environment that shape people’s identities can uncover the hidden reasons behind a malfunctioning society. Seeing how people’s actions affect them and their environment makes them aware of the immense power they have within. Carrying such ability, possible to change the world for the better, in collaboration with the rest of the community, can be frightening but eye-opening at the same time.
Through the prism of a famous literary dystopia, Brave New World, the functioning of the entire system acting as a mirror of the human kind is explored. The parallels between its dystopian vision and the contemporary society reflect the realities of the present and the hidden problems that impede the human life experience. This offers an insight into where certain choices may lead the humanity to and help to raise awareness on the current situation. The paradox of such negativities in both real and fictional worlds is in the disillusionment they carry, which can be a powerful omen to encourage change within oneself, and therefore within the world.
RIPEROLOGIJA I FEMICID: UKLANJANJE ŽRTAVA KROZ PATRIJARHAT I MISTIZIRANJE
The idea of how the myth of Jack the Ripper mirrors our hysterias1 put forward by Allan Moore and Eddie Campbell as the authors of From Hell can be interpreted and analyzed in many different ways. Whether it is in the writings of Judith Walkovitz where she gave a fair presentation of how it was to live in Victorian England for a common prostitute in her book City of Dreadful Delight, or in Halie Rubenhold book The Five that is certain homage to Jack the Ripper victims with a detail presentation of the women’s downfall, neither offered an examination of the misogynistic society that enables male dominance and female oppression. However, alongside polar opposites as Ripperologists and Feminists who gave much attention to either discovering identity of the unknown killer or trying to give a voice to the voiceless victims, a handful of scholars and historians deciphered and analyzed the femicide machine and the patriarchal society as key elements that enabled the development and implementation of the society’s double standards.

TONI MORRISON AND MAYA ANGELOU AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE IDENTITY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN
Literature, as an art form, is one of the foundations of every culture and social group. From its beginnings African-American literature, both oral and written, was the only way for African Americans to express their emotions and recount their often tragic life stories. In the development of African American literature, a significant role was played by authors who, in addition to creating literature, were actively involved in the fight for the rights of African-Americans. Two such female authors, Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou, through their works provided insight into the lives, problems, rises and falls of young African-American women trying to succeed in a world that does not accept them. Through the analysis of the selected works of the authors, this thesis emphasizes the influence Morrison and Angelou had on the development of the identity of African-American girls and women.
JAZZ AND BLUES IN TONI MORRISON`S NOVELS: "SONG OF SOLOMON", "BELOVED" AND "JAZZ"
The African American ethnic group in the United States shared an experience that was anything but acceptable and pleasurable. Amidst the hardest period of their lives, they managed to produce some of the best cultural inventions that the country has ever witnessed, and these are blues and jazz. Music helped them communicate their pain and express emotions that otherwise would not resurface. The aim of this thesis is to show how music, particularly blues and jazz, and literature are connected through the examination of works of one of the most significant African American writers, Toni Morrison. Novels that will be examined are Beloved, Jazz and Song of Solomon
