Due to the technological importance behind the possibility to discover novel classes of hard materials an enormous research effort has been directed during the last decades towards the synthesis and characterisation of promising carbon-based compounds such as carbon nitrides and boron carbon nitrides. However, despite many attempts of synthesis and the indisputable progresses made in the field, amorphous samples with unclear crystallographic data have been often obtained in many research laboratories. In particular, several problems arise from the fact that most of the samples are of polymorphic nature, thus leading to a difficult and uncertain spectroscopic characterisation. A general understanding of the relations between composition and the electronic structure properties has therefore been provided theoretically in this Thesis to get further insight into the characteristics of pure crystalline forms. As one might expect this work has suddenly been turned out into a complicate and challenging task because of the lack of reliable experimental crystal structures to be used as references for the computational inputs. Therefore it became essential to propose hypothetical bi- and three-dimensional model phases to obtain trends on the relative stability, electronic and mechanical properties of carbon and boron carbon-nitrides. So far as that is concerned, a systematic study of pure crystalline CNx (where x=0.36 and 1.33) and BC2N systems has been proposed as an important complement to the experimental knowledge. Thanks to the progress in modern computer technology it has also been possible to compute such an investigation via ab-initio (first-principles) methods by testing and probing different solid state calculational approaches. In fact, one of the first objectives of this project has been the search of a valid computational density-functional-based scheme able to reproduce and/or predict the hardness and stability of a wide variety of ultra-hard materials.Calculations of the cohesive properties and standard enthalpies of formation have been carried out to address the thermodynamic stability of different isoelectronic compositions, namely C3N4, C11N4 and BC2N. The hardness has also been studied by means of the analysis of the calculated elastic and bulk moduli. The investigation of the electronic properties has been achieved with the calculation of the density of states, band structure, electron density maps and crystal orbital overlap population analysis. For some of the studied molecular clusters, the 13C NMR shifts have been evaluated to provide a spectroscopic discrimination between systems with very similar structural characteristics. This is the case of the hexagonal and orthorhombic models of the graphitic-like C3N4 form. Finally, the determination of the electron-energy loss near edge structures of C, B and N K ionisation edges has been computed in order to provide reference spectra of pure crystalline materials, likely to allow a discrimination of polymorphic samples. Results are presented to demonstrate that carbon nitrides are ultra-hard systems with outstanding mechanical properties. In particular, the carbon rich composition, C11N4, has shown larger cohesive energies and it is generally stiffer than the electronic analogue C3N4. However, the possibility to deposit single phase samples should be highly hampered in both stoichiometries by their large positive enthalpies of formation. The introduction of boron atoms (boron carbon nitrides) has displayed a slight decreasing in the magnitudes of the elastic and bulk moduli, though the calculated values are still higher than that of cubic boron nitride (i.e. the second hardest known material). Nevertheless, three-dimensional BC2N phases have also shown exothermic enthalpies of formation which point to an easier deposition of the "BCN" materials with respect to carbon nitrides. Therefore, by considering the whole set of the investigated model phases, sp3-bonded boron carbon nitrides result as the best candidates for novel ultra-hard materials which could, in principle, be synthesised with the actual techniques. Very recent experimental results seem to support this general tendency.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

On the geomimetism basis which allows the use of natural materials as graphite, diamond, a quartz, pyrite, etc. as model host-structures, new stoichiometries are proposed. Their crystal structures are optimised and discriminated using energy criteria with the help of ab initio calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. As a matter of fact, we will propose, as examples, XC3N3 (where X is B, Al, P, Ga or As), CN2 and C2N, or SiNF. The obtained results allow to propose new ultra-hard materials in the BC3N3 ternary class, with the rhombohedral BC3N3 whose bulk modulus magnitude is 358 GPa. Else, they allows use to propose a decomposition mechanism of CVD nitrogen-rich carbon nitrides which is initiated either by a gaseous N2 formation or by a .C = N cyanogen radical formation. Finally, a new class of materials, the nitrofluorides whose archetype would be SiNF, is proposed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

U2Ni2Sn).This thesis presents an ab initio study of several classes of intermetallics and their hydrides. These compounds are interesting from both a fundamental and an applied points of view. To achieve this aim two complementary methods, constructed within the DFT, were chosen : (i) pseudo potential based VASP for geometry optimization, structural investigations and electron localization mapping (ELF), and (ii) all-electrons ASW method for a detailed description of the electronic structure, chemical bonding properties following different schemes as well as quantities depending on core electrons such as the hyperfine field. A special interest is given with respect to the interplay between magnetovolume and chemical interactions (metal-H) effects within the following hydrided systems : binary Laves (e.g. ScFe2) and Haucke (e.g. LaNi5) phases on one hand, and ternary cerium based (e.g. CeRhSn) and uranium based (e.g. U2Ni2Sn) alloys on the other hand

Les résultats sont également appuyés par une étude semi-empirique au sein de la dynamique moléculaireIn this thesis, we present an multiscale approaches based on theoretical modeling within density functional (DFT) of different classes of complex magnetic properties switched from predominantly Fe(II) (3d6). The manuscript is organized into three main parts: the first was devoted to the presentation of theoretical chemistry (concepts and methods). The molecular magnetism was examined through the calculation of the coupling constant and discussed in Part II. The analysis of the coupling constant, magnetism, electronic structure and chemical bonds was presented. In the third Part, the study of thermodynamic values for [Fe(btz)2(NCS)2] and the family of spin crossover complexes [Fe(L)2(NCS)2] has formed the third party. Two complementary approaches are used: i-“molecular” which considers a fragment entity or isolated molecule using different computer codes targeted through various exchange correlation functional and basis; ii-"solid state" taking into account the extended crystal structure. The results are also supported by a semi-empirical study through molecular dynamics

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
