Automated machine learning from data to predictions
Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 61-64).MakeML is a software system that enables knowledge workers with no programming experience to easily and quickly create machine learning models that have competitive performance with models hand-built by trained data scientists. MakeML consists of a web-based application similar to a spreadsheet in which users select features and choose a target column to predict. MakeML then automates the process of feature engineering, model selection, training, and hyperparameter optimization. After training, the user can evaluate the performance of the model and can make predictions on new data using the web interface. We show that a model generated automatically using MakeML is able to achieve accuracy better than 90% of submissions for the Titanic problem on the public data science platform Kaggle.by Isabella M. Isabella Bonarelli della Rovere: racconto di un’identità contesa
Unlike Guidubaldo and Prospero Bonarelli della Rovere, who rose to literary fame, Countess Isabella (d. 1602), wife of the eclectic noble of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Teodor Lacki, is a figure of little importance in Italian historiography. According to the few sources mentioning her it is clear that she was the sister of the noble Count Pietro Bonarelli, from Italy’s Marche region, and with him she fled hastily the city of Urbino when he fell into disgrace of the new prince. The family moved eventually to Novellara and the scholar of local antiquities Giuseppe Campori (1821-1887) reports that a daughter of the count, whose name he is not certain of (he gives only its initial, ‘N.’), was maritata a Teodoro Laczki gentiluomo polacco (“married to Teodor Lacki, Polish gentleman”). These reports are not in contrast with each other, but are nonetheless inconsistent with Lithuanian sources, primarily the Funeral oration (and the collection of poems that accompanies it), written in honor of Isabella by Johannes Kimbar. Whilst Italian scholars had the advantage of direct access to original documents in loco, on the other hand, one cannot doubt the information that can be deduced from Isabella’s eulogy. Not only for chronological reasons, but especially because Kimbar was at the service of Lacki as well as personally acquainted with his circle, he deserves more credit, conventional formulas of the apologetic repertoire put aside. It does not seem possible that this literate could have reported inaccurate information in his erudite works, later given to the press, in which he recalls moments in the life of the Italian noblewoman, especially since his occasional speech is expressly dedicated to people who knew the deceased even better than the author did. Therefore, the question whether Isabella was the sister of Count Pietro Bonarelli, rather than his daughter, looks pointless from a logical point of view. Still the discrepancies between the mentioned sources require an explanation. A comparison of Italian documents of various types referring to the members of the Bonarelli family from those two generations, even texts which date to their same period, highlights disagreements on dates, names, places and even significant life events. For these reasons, while some hypotheses remain yet to be proved, the reconstruction proposed here should not be far from the truth.
Implications for Spatial Processing in Separate Hemispheres in a Songbird: The Degree of Bilateral Input from the Auditory Midbrain to the Auditory Thalamus
Full text is available to authenticated members of The University of Auckland only.Ascending output of nucleus ovoidalis (Ov) to Field L is purely ipsilateral for all birds, as far as is known, and since there are no connections between auditory areas in separate hemispheres, what one hemisphere ‘understands’ about the origin of sounds in space is entirely dependent on the nature of the input from the midbrain nucleus mesencephalicus lateralis pars dorsalis (MLd) to the thalamic Ov. The present study aimed to characterise, in a preliminary way, the proportion, density, organisation and termination of MLd cells with ipsilateral only, contralateral only and bilateral projections to Ov in the zebra finch by retrogradely labelling MLd neurons by way of injections of different fluorescent tracers into each Ov. Results show a predominance of ipsilateral projections of MLd to Ov and identify for the first time MLd neurons that project purely contralaterally, and cells that project bilaterally via branched axons. Also, cells with ipsilateral only projections are generally located in caudal regions of MLd and tend to terminate laterally within Ov, while cells with contralateral only projections are generally located in rostral MLd and tend to terminate medially in Ov. Cells with bilateral projections are found throughout MLd with a greater density mid-MLd and terminate throughout Ov, but generally do so homotopically. Similar results were also found for dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DLL) and ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (VLL) projections to Ov. There was no correlation between major subdivisions of MLd (inner, MLd.I and outer, MLd.O) and the distribution of cells with ipsilateral only, contralateral only or bilateral projections to Ov. Finally, the trajectories of MLd and lateral lemniscus axons to Ov were charted and shown in detail for the first time. These data and those from other species, will aid in understanding the neural circuitry underlying binaural localisation processing in the brain as a whole

The employment of working class women in Leeds, 1880-1914.
Between 1880 and 1914 women's industrial employment in Leeds was transformed
by the introduction of the factory system in the consumer-goods trades. Women
came to predominate in ready-made tailoring, but have been neglected in
histories of the city.
Recent studies have argued that a. focus on the sex division of labour in
social production challenges conventional interpretations of working-class
history. This thesis contributes to current debates by examining women's work
in Leeds. It argues that the sex division of labour and the tensions between
sex and class had a critical impact on the development of the local labour
movement. Studies of women's work have shown the importance of regional
variations in the pattern of female employment. Leeds provides the
opportunity to study a hitherto neglected group, - female factory workers
employed outside cotton textiles.
Wonen's subordinate role within industry and their attitudes to work were
structured by the experience of work itself as well as by their early
socialisatjon and role in the family. The first section examines the
conditions of women's industrial employment. It suggests that job segregation
by sex structured the specific features of women's work in Leeds. Section two locates the extent and type of womens work in Leeds in the
context of the social conditions of family life and contemporary expectations
of appropriate sex roles. The varied family backgrounds, age and marital
status affected the attitudes of individual women to paid employment and
modified its effects..
The final section examines the attitudes of the Leeds labour movement towards
women workers and the tensions between sex and class. The labour movement
failed to address women's needs and to offer a real challenge to their
subordinate industrial position. This weakened union organisation and
independent labour politics in the city
Characterization of the defect density states in MoOx for c-Si solar cell applications
Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness
Gender and the politics of the gaze in Bronte's Wuthering Heights
The objective of this thesis is to present an analysis of whether Catherine's image has been shaped by the male gaze, how she contends with the three looks of the male gaze - the look of the characters, the look of the reader, and the look of the author - and finally, how the male gaze is broken. The theoretical parameter of this analysis, the concept of the male gaze, is theorized by Laura Mulvey in the article "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (1975) which critiques the relation between the male gaze and the female image within the patriarchal molding of visual pleasure. Borrowing Mulvey's critique of the gendering of visual pleasure in films, which pertains to the context of classical Hollywood cinema, I have articulated her theory in relation to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, to examine the dynamics of the male gaze regarding the female character, Catherine. This study also aimed at examing the extent to which Mulvey's theoretical paradigm produced for cinema could be articulated specifically in relation to a literary text written in the nineteenth century
