No full textQuella del paesaggio è una categoria analitico-interpretativa e d’azione che ha assunto nell’attività di ricerca e nelle pubblicazioni scientifiche di Massimo Quaini una presenza ricorrente e crescente con il trascorrere del tempo. Nei suoi testi la concezione del paesaggio come prodotto storico di specifiche combinazioni socio-ambientali va via via approfondendosi, anche in relazione all’emergere di una domanda “sociale” di paesaggio, e alle risposte istituzionali date dai piani paesaggistici redatti negli anni più recenti. Approfondendo i principali saggi ed esperienze di ricerca applicata che contribuiscono a definire lo specifico apporto di Quaini come studioso del paesaggio, si delinea una figura unica nel contesto italiano, di rilievo non soltanto per la geografia ma per diverse altre discipline, fra le quali la pianificazione

Full text linkThis article contains the text of an e-mail I received from Massimo Quaini in 2017. Through this mail he was answering to my invitation to participate in the fourth edition of “Dialoghi tra geografia e filosofia”, a ‘dialogic’ seminar I have been organizing since 2014 to enhance the discussion between geographers and philosophers. Due to his illness, unluckily he was unable to attend the conference but he wrote me an e-mail in which he invited me to write a book together, four-handed. This e-mail is one of the last documents ever written by Quaini: here we have many of his landscape ideas, as well as many thoughts on the identity and the future of geography, and much more. For this reason I thought making this mail public could be the best way to honour his memory

Full text linkAmong the geographical associations the Italian Centre for Historical and Geographical Studies (CISGE) was the one with which Massimo Quaini maintained a stronger relationship. In addition to the sharing of the study fields, Quaini was also linked to CISGE by the close and inseparable link between geography and history, the combination of concrete research and theoretical reflection, the plurality of approaches, the continuous dialectic and the marked interdisciplinarity. Elements that have always characterized the Centre since its foundation, becoming concrete in meetings, seminars, conferences, research groups, national and international projects and in numerous publications. Through a careful analysis of Quaini’s writings contained in the proceedings, the collections of essays and the journal Geostorie (which since 2000 replaced the Notiziario del CISGE) – a long and uninterrupted series from 1992 to 2017 – the contribution aims at highlighting the original, critical and stimulating contribution offered by Massimo to the four fundamental study streams of CISGE: historical geography, history of cartography, history of geographical thought, history of travels and of explorations

Full text linkIl saggio discute, a partire da due punti di vista differenti, quelli di una archeologa e di uno storico, il modo in cui uno dei più importanti geografi degli ultimi decenni, Massimo Quaini, dalla fine degli anni Sessanta, abbia intrapreso un dialogo, non sempre con successo, con le discipline sorelle della geografia storica: l'archeologia e la storia sociale. Il contributo riflette sul percorso sperimentale di Quaini “verso una nuova geografia” e sui numerosi incontri, separazioni, percorsi paralleli e divergenti che si sono verificati lungo quella sua esperienza di ricerca. Una particolare attenzione è dedicata alle esperienze e le frequentazioni scientifiche e culturali di Massimo Quaini che caratterizzarono in diversi momenti la sua esperienza genovese, ed in particolare quelle del Centro Studi Ligure sui Villaggi Deserti – da cui originarono i dibattiti intorno alla geografia delle popolazioni e alla storia della cultura materiale –, e successivamente quelle legate al Seminario Permanente di Storia Locale e alla lunga discussione intorno alla microstoria e ai suoi diversi esiti. Il saggio ha dunque una specifica caratterizzazione metodologica e storiografica, e si confronta con prospettive esplicitamente interdisciplinari che riguardano, tra le altre, la storia del paesaggio e dell’ambiente, così come la storia sociale e culturale

Full text linkIn accordance with the main goals of this collection of essays in honour of Massimo Quaini, the text focuses on a peculiar character of the Ligurian geographer’s sensibility, his attention to landscape protectionresearch activity developed in the context of the humanistic geography. Starting from a personal narrative based on his own reminiscences and neglected memories, the author tries to shed light on the relationships between civil commitment and cultural reflection which characterize environmental sensitivity, bringing together his interests with Quaini’s emotional geographies. Finally, some of Quaini’s everyday practicalities are highlighted as the easiest doorway to improve the cognitive procedures of cultural geography

Full text linkQuesto articolo contiene il testo di una e-mail che ho ricevuto da Massimo Quaini nel 2017, con la quale rispondeva al mio invito a partecipare alla quarta edizione dei Dialoghi tra geografia e filosofia, un seminario ‘dialogico’ che organizzo dal 2014 per favorire la discussione tra geografi e filosofi. A causa della sua malattia, sfortunatamente Quaini non è stato in grado di partecipare al seminario, ma mi ha scritto un’e-mail in cui mi invitava a scrivere un libro a quattro mani con lui. Questa e-mail è uno degli ultimi documenti scritti da Quaini: vi si trovano molte delle sue idee sul paesaggio, così come diverse riflessioni sull’identità e sul futuro della geografia e molto altro. Per questo motivo ho pensato che renderla pubblica potesse essere il modo migliore per onorarne la memoria

Full text linkWith regard to the relationship between literary works and geographical studies, Massimo Quaini’s interest consolidated into a heuristic imprint whose originality has not yet been adequately enlightened. Through the analysis of his essays, the paper identifies some clues of his thought: methodologically, the need for a critical approach of ‘archeology of knowledge and sources’ to the writer’s profile; teleologically, the identification of the geographical factors inside the works as a tool for territorial enhancement; epistemologically, the use of literary topoi and metaphors as an interpretive key – together with the geographical-historical analysis – of the historical and current territorial dynamics
