(MARVI: An Innovative Approach for Village Level Groundwater Management)

    No full text
Managing Aquifer Recharge and Sustaining Groundwater Use through Village-level Intervention, MARVI, is a transdisciplinary project commenced in February 2012. It involved a close cooperation among seven core partners and two associated partners and collaboration among 30 researchers from a range of disciplines and local villagers from the two watersheds, viz. the Meghraj watershed in Gujarat and the Dharta watershed in Rajasthan. The project is funded by Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). The MARVI project is focused on developing a village level participatory approach, models and tools to assist in improving groundwater supplies and reducing its demand through the direct involvement of farmers and other affected stakeholders. A unique feature of MARVI is the use of scientific measurements by citizens through the engagement of Bhujal Jankaars (BJs), a Hindi word meaning ‘groundwater informed’ volunteers. With appropriate training and capacity building, BJs monitor groundwater levels and quality, making sense from a village perspective of what is happening to village groundwater availability. BJs convey this information to farmers and others in their own language. Groundwater level represents the integration of recharge, pumping and flow processes and is a direct measure of groundwater availability and the success of any collective management practices. BJs are an effective, trusted and valuable interface between village communities and government agencies, NGOs and researchers. This book provides summaries of key outputs from the MARVI project covering the aspects of Bhujal Jaankaar approach development, hydrogeology, agronomy and socio-economic analysis, MyWell app and the Village Groundwater Cooperatives to move towards village level water security and improved livelihood improvement

Umar Marvi and the Representation of Sindh: Cinema and Modernity in the Margins

    No full text
International audienceUmar Marvi, the first Sindhi feature film made in Pakistan, was released in 1956, in the context of the One Unit, when the merger of West Pakistan’s provinces pushed Sindhi intellectuals, students, and politicians to assert themselves in defense of their language and culture. By depicting the story of a famous folk heroine heralded as a patriotic figure by Sindh’s most prominent nationalist leader, we contend that Umar Marvi contributed to the construction of a modern national imaginary for Sindhis in post-Partition Pakistan. This imaginary rests on a narrative that conceives Sindhis as a peaceful and syncretic folk culture continuously occupying the mythicized land of the Indus. We show that Umar Marvi takes part in this narrative by portraying a certain image of an idealized community and by representing a fixed, folklorized heritage while attempting to master cinema as the medium of modernity

Quantifying the environmental impact on individuals' well-being in risk analysis

Catastrophes, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, exemplify how accidents that damage the environment affect society in ways that exceed human and property losses. Environmental damages caused by disasters are often continuous, influencing a broader portion of society, and might continually affect future generations moreso than the acute impacts associated with human health risks. As this paper demonstrates, policies in the United States and abroad affirm the importance of protecting the environment as a common asset for current and future members of society. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a required common tool implemented by decision-makers to analyze the environmental impacts of their actions. Analysts around the world use various methods and techniques to assess the impacts of human actions on the environment. However, the effect of environmental impacts on individuals’ well-being is not sufficiently assessed in current EIA methodologies. Although current methodologies discuss how the environment may be changed by a particular human action, the scholarship does not sufficiently address questions related to how the affected environment can change human life. In response, this paper aims to improve the completeness of EIA methodologies by proposing a capability approach for assessing the effect of environmental impacts on humans’ well-being. Two human capabilities are specified to explicitly address the environmental impacts of human actions. Evaluating the proposed capabilities in EIA procedures can enrich and complement current EIA practices and more fully assess human actions’ impacts.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2017-08-01The student, Morteza Tavanaie Marvi, accepted the attached license on 2015-07-24 at 10:18.The student, Morteza Tavanaie Marvi, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2015-07-24 at 10:25.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2015-07-24 at 11:12.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #7976 on 2015-09-29 at 15:04:56Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-29T21:02:39Z (GMT). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Forty-nine years of sensory research literature: a review on its development, foundation and future research directions

    No full text
The notion of ‘sensory’ is complex and bounded with different disciplines. Even though the relationship between the senses and consumer-marketing has been acknowledged, the conceptual foundation is fragmented and scattered; it has become more multifaceted due to the increased attention it and its related concepts have drawn, which makes an investigation of the concept essential. We evaluate the foundational structure of sensory research over four decades. Our findings revealed twelve research groups (i.e., spatial judgement) and six research clusters (i.e., transition from experience to sensory) embodied by sensory research, which can be considered to make up the integral structure of the sensory domain. We provide a comprehensive understanding of sensory research for those who wish to understand its intellectual structure and a future research model that identifies three important perspectives (methodological, micro and macro) for researchers hoping to provide insights into sensory research based on emerging sensory topics

Towards an understanding of corporate heritage: its evolution from 2006 to 2019 and an agenda for future inquiry

    No full text
Having a meaningful connotation with the longevity of the existence, the concept of heritage is being considered as a key element for international organisations to sustain the competitive advantage. The ample research on heritage made an enquiry to the domain of the research essential. Based on ISI Web of Knowledge, this paper evaluates the knowledge structure of corporate and brand heritage by reviewing 78 relevant articles with 941 citations in 50 journals from the business and management domain, between January 2006 and November 2019. By adopting co-citation analysis and multidimensional scaling, we identified five research groups. Co-occurrence network and algorithmic historiography were also utilised to identify the key themes, emerging and evolution of the seminal works. Based on the recent highly cited, a future model was proposed for researchers as well as international marketers that can provide insights on the evolving topics and trend areas within the research domain
