    Alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine and D-Panthenol Eye Drops in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery

    Cataract surgery is widespread. The surgical procedure is associated with damage to the epithelial barrier and interruption of the corneal innervation. In addition, pathological events sustain signs and symptoms that may persist for a long time. Recently, a fixed combination of alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine and D-Panthenol (Oftassiale) has been available as eye drops. The present study investigated the effects of an Oftassiale therapy in 20 patients undergoing cataract surgery. A comparison group included 20 patients treated with topical hyaluronic acid. Standard prophylactic and anti-inflammatory treatment was prescribed to all patients. Clinical signs and symptoms were assessed over time. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) was performed accordingly. Oftassiale treatment significantly reduced clinical features and improved IVCM outcomes. In addition, therapy was well-tolerated, and no clinically significant adverse events occurred. In conclusion, this study confirmed that IVCM helps assess the tunnel after cataract surgery due to its ability to provide microscopic details in vivo. Topical therapy with alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine and D-Panthenol eye drops promoted and stabilized the reepithelialization process. This fixed combination also accelerated and modulated the repair of the corneal innervation. Moreover, this treatment was well-tolerated and safe

    In vivo confocal microscopy in a patient with conjunctival lymphoma

    A case of primary conjunctival mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma studied by in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) is described for the first time. Examination of the lower mediobulbar and forniceal conjunctiva of the left eye of a 37-year-old female patient showed a typical salmon-pink patch. IVCM examination of the conjunctival lesion showed irregular, polygonal, conjunctival bulbar epithelial cells with blurred edges and without visible nucleus. Many small, roundish, hyper-reflective cells were also seen. These cells were arranged diffusely or in nests in cyst-like hypo-reflective spaces. A few highly reflective cells were also visible among deep stromal collagen fibres. The IVCM picture recalled the histological profile of low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, characterized by sheets of neoplastic cells around reactive follicles. IVCM enabled non-invasive evaluation of the eye surface at high magnification and with good contrast, and could be useful for early differential diagnosis of conjunctival lesions. © 2007 The Author Journal compilation © 2007 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Air-guided manual deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty: long-term results and confocal microscopic findings

    PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term results of air-guided manual deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and to perform confocal microscopy on postoperative DALK corneas. METHODS: Seven postoperative consecutive DALK corneas were evaluated 1 year after suture removal. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination evaluating visual acuity, astigmatism, corneal thickness, and endothelial cell count. Confocal microscopy was performed to examine the corneas of the seven eyes and to obtain the measured interface depth. RESULTS: Eighteen months after surgery, the mean postoperative uncorrected visual acuity was 20/38 and the mean best-corrected visual acuity was 20/23. Postoperative mean value of residual recipient stroma thickness was 65.57 microm +/- 28.74. CONCLUSIONS: Maximum depth DALK can lead to significant advantages for quality of vision when compared to other types of anterior lamellar keratoplasty. Still, it remains a challenging procedure. These results show that a deep dissection without baring Descemet membrane makes good visual results possible, preventing corneal perforation and conversion to penetrating graft
