No full textNational audienceEn janvier, Sigmar Gabriel cède à son ami Martin Schulz la présidence du Parti social-démocrate allemand (SPD) et le rôle de candidat à la chancellerie lors des élections fédérales du 24 septembre prochain. Schulz est officiellement intronisé le 19 mars avec un score véritablement brejnévien : 100 % des voix des quelque 3500 délégués du parti ! Le nombre de nouvelles adhésions au parti s'envole aussitôt. Dans les sondages, le SPD monte en flèche et dépasse par moment l'Union chrétienne-démocrate (CDU) de l'actuelle chancelière Angela Merkel. Quatre mois plus tard, l'engouement est largement retombé, le SPD a perdu trois élections régionales importantes, dont celle de son fief de Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, et se retrouve selon les sondages à 10, voire 13 points derrière la CDU. Comment expliquer une telle volatilité ? Un personnage atypique, en mal de visibilité La principale force de Martin Schulz s'est rapidement muée en faiblesse : alors qu'il incarne l'espoir de renouveau de la social-démocratie parce qu'il ne fait pas partie du cercle restreint de dirigeants que les Allemands ont vu pendant de nombreuses années presque tous les jours à la télévision, les électeurs n'ont pas encore pu percer sa véritable personnalité. März 2017 mit 100 % der Delegiertenstimmen zum Parteivorsitzenden und Kanzlerkandidaten gewählt wurde und der „Schulz-Zug“ damit richtig Fahrt aufnahm, hätte sich wohl niemand vorstellen können, dass dieser Zug Martin Schulz binnen Jahresfrist aufs politische Abstellgleis führen würde. In der Tat dürften Tiefe und Geschwindigkeit des politischen Falls selbst für sozialdemokratische Verhältnisse beispiellos sein. Betrachtet man Sigmar Gabriels Ankündigung vom 24. Januar 2017, zugunsten Schulz’ auf Parteivorsitz und Kanzlerkandidatur verzichten zu wollen, als Ausgangspunkt der Entwicklung und Martin Schulz’ Erklärung vom 9. Februar 2018, doch nicht als Außenmister ins Kabinett Merkel IV eintreten zu wollen, als ihren Schlusspunkt, so dauerte es gerade 382 Tage, bis sich Martin Schulz in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung vom Heilsbringer der Sozialdemokratie zu einem Paria der bundesdeutschen Politik gewandelt hatte
