BACKWARD INTEGRATION BY COOPERATIVES IN IMPERFECTLY COMPETITIVE AGRICULTURAL RAW PRODUCT MARKETS

No full text
This paper models backward integration by processing cooperatives into raw product production. Our analysis demonstrates that a cooperative's incentive to acquire raw product production capacity depends on its ability to restrict member production to optimal levels and the relationship between members and nonmembers in the raw product market.Agribusiness, Marketing,

The streamwise turbulence intensity in the intermediate layer of high Reynolds turbulent pipe flow

No full text
A modification of the Townsend-Perry attached eddy model is derived in order to reproduce a more realistic variation of the integral length scale. A new wavenumber range is introduced to the model at wavenumbers smaller than the Townsend-Perry k^(-1) spectrum. This necessary addition can also account for the high Reynolds number outer peak of the turbulent kinetic energy in the intermediate layer. An analytic expression is obtained for this outer peak in agreement with extremely high Reynolds number data by Hultmark et al (2012, 2013). The finding of Dallas et al (2009) that it is the eddy turnover time and not the mean flow gradient which scales with distance to the wall and skin friction velocity in the intermediate layer implies, when combined with Townsend's (1976) production-dissipation balance, that the mean flow gradient has an outer peak at the same location as the turbulent kinetic energy

Change in tau phosphorylation associated with neurodegeneration in the ME7 model of prion disease

No full text
Hyperphosphorylation of the microtubule-associated protein tau is a significant determinant in AD (Alzheimer's disease), where it is associated with disrupted axonal transport and probably causes synaptic dysfunction. Although less well studied, hyperphosphorylation has been observed in prion disease. We have investigated the expression of hyperphosphorylated tau in the hippocampus of mice infected with the ME7 prion agent. In ME7-infected animals, there is a selective loss of CA1 synapse, first discernable at 13 weeks of disease. There is a potential that dysfunctional axonal transport contributes to this synaptopathy. Thus investigating hyperphosphorylated tau that is dysfunctional in AD could illuminate whether and how they are significant in prion disease. We observed no differences in the levels of phosphorylated tau (using MC1, PHF-1 and CP13 antibodies) in detergent-soluble and detergent-insoluble fractions extracted from ME7- and NBH- (normal brain homogenate) treated animals across disease. In contrast, we observed an increase in phospho-tau staining for several epitopes using immunohistochemistry in ME7-infected hippocampal sections. Although the changes were not of the magnitude seen in AD tissue, clear differences for several phospho-tau species were seen in the CA1 and CA3 of ME7-treated animals (pSer(199-202)>pSer(214)>PHF-1 antibody). Temporally, these changes were restricted to animals at 20 weeks and none of the disease-related staining was associated with the axons or dendrites that hold CA1 synapses. These findings suggest that phosphorylation of tau at the epitopes examined does not underpin the early synaptic dysfunction. These data suggest that the changes in tau phosphorylation recorded here and observed by others relate to end-stage prion pathology when early dysfunctions have progressed to overt neuronal loss

QATAR-2 : a K dwarf orbited by a transiting hot Jupiter and a more massive companion in an outer orbit

No full text
We report the discovery and initial characterization of Qatar-2b, a hot Jupiter transiting a V = 13.3 mag K dwarf in a circular orbit with a short period, P b = 1.34 days. The mass and radius of Qatar-2b are M P = 2.49 M J and R P = 1.14 R J, respectively. Radial-velocity monitoring of Qatar-2 over a span of 153 days revealed the presence of a second companion in an outer orbit. The Systemic Console yielded plausible orbits for the outer companion, with periods on the order of a year and a companion mass of at least several M J. Thus, Qatar-2 joins the short but growing list of systems with a transiting hot Jupiter and an outer companion with a much longer period. This system architecture is in sharp contrast to that found by Kepler for multi-transiting systems, which are dominated by objects smaller than Neptune, usually with tightly spaced orbits that must be nearly coplanar

Robustness of the k-double auction under Knightian uncertainty

No full text
This dissertation considers the robustness of private value and common value k-double auctions when those markets are populated by regret minimizers. Regret minimizing agents, unlike typical expected utility maximizers, need not commit to a single prior in their decision rule. In fact, it is a feature of the minimax regret decision rule that is not based on any prior. This makes the decision rule an interesting one for agents who face Knightian Uncertainty. A decision problem involves Knightian uncertainty if the agents know the possible outcomes but not those outcomes' probabilities -- as may be the case in a new market. This dissertation shows that in a private value k-double auction, minimax regret traders will not converge to price-taking behavior as the market grows. Similarly, in a common value auction, traders' behavior may depend on the parameter k, but does not depend on the number of other traders in the market. The invariance of regret minimizing traders' strategies to the size of the markets they inhabit is not an accident of the sealed bid double auction institution. In fact, it is a consequence of the symmetry axiom. The final chapter in this dissertation shows that any agents in a k-double auction who use decision rules that accord with the symmetry axiom, then their bids and asks will not depend on the number of rival traders.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Preferred Suppliers in Auction Markets

No full text
In a procurement setting, this paper examines agreements between a buyer and one of the suppliers which would increase their joint surplus. The provisions of such agreements depend on the buyer's ability to design the rules of the final procurement auction. When the buyer has no such ability, their joint surplus can be increased by an agreement which grants to the preferred supplier a right-of-first-refusal on the lowest price offer from the other suppliers. When the buyer does have this ability, one agreement which maximizes their joint surplus includes a revelation game for the cost of the preferred supplier and a reserve price in the procurement auction based on that cost.procurement auctions, bilateral agreements

Reputation in continuous-time games with multiple commitment types

No full text
We study a continuous-time game with imperfect monitoring in which a large player faces a continuum of infinitely-lived small players. We extend Faingold and Sannikov (2011) to a framework in which the support of the prior belief of the small players contains any finite number of commitment types. In this setting, we show the existence of a unique Markov equilibrium, we characterize a partial differential equation (PDE) for the equilibrium payoff, and we derive an optimality condition for the equilibrium actions. Also, we provide a stochastic representation of the Markov equilibrium payoffs, which is the solution to the PDE. Finally, we show that the equilibrium action of the sufficiently patient large player follows a non-stationary process that is determined by the small players’ posterior beliefs.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Seokjong Ryu, accepted the attached license on 2017-04-14 at 14:49.The student, Seokjong Ryu, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2017-04-14 at 14:51.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2017-04-17 at 09:14.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10764 on 2017-08-10 at 15:05:37Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-10T20:32:56Z (GMT). Clara Ertyas P. 2011. An Appraisal Analysis of Gossip News Texts Written By Perez Hilton From Perezhilton.com (A Study Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics).English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University. This research explored the appraisal system in the gossip news text written by Perez Hilton, taken from his website, perezhilton.com. There were eight texts that were analyzed. They were two texts of Katy Perry, two text of Leona Lewis, two text of Miley Cyrus, and two texts of Chris Brown, which were analyzed using Appraisal Theory. Appraisal theory is concerned with attitude, graduation, and engagement. The objectives of this thesis were to find out what appraising items applied in those texts; how they were applied; and why they were applied, including the ideology. This was a descriptive qualitative research. The technique of taking sample used in this research was total sampling. There were two data in this research, the primary data which was sourced from the eight analyzed texts, and the secondary data which was contained the information of Perez Hilton related to his writings. The results show that the three kinds of attitudes (affect, jugdment, and appreciation) are applied in the texts, but mostly is judgment. The types of the items are in the forms of word, nominal group and clause. Mostly the attitudes are in the forms of epithet group, attitudinal lexis and mental process clauses. Meanwhile, the engagement is mostly monogloss. The moslty graduation is force, and the scaling of the graduation is up- scaled. The attitudes are applied through the strong expression, and they are applied in Analytical Exposition genre. Additionally, the texts are written subjectively based on the writer’s aspiration. The appraising items are applied in the texts because of the ideologies that the writer wants to convey. The ideologies are right antagonist for texts exposing Katy Perry and Leona Lewis; and left antagonist for texts exposing Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown. The ideology shows the writer’s style in writing gossip news text that he supports the artist if he likes and conversely he challenges the artists who he does not like
