Bilingual acquisition data: Dative Alternation_DA-L2 Adult dataset
This dataset is the result of the research carried out by Silvia Sánchez Calderón (UNED) and Raquel Fernández Fuertes (UVa) in the frame of the Research Group UVALAL (University of Valladolid Language Acquisition Lab, https://uvalal.uva.es/) whose Principal Investigator is Raquel Fernández Fuertes. In this project, the research is conducted on the second language (L2) acquisition of English Dative Alternation (DA) constructions by adult learners whose first language (L1) is Spanish. The results are compared to a control group of L1 English adults. An Acceptability Judgment Task (AJT) was designed for both groups to address grammaticality, sentence structure and word order of the two English DA structures.
The two DA structures under analysis involve, on the one hand, prepositional to-datives that alternate as Double Object Constructions (DOCs) (1) and, on the other hand, prepositional for-datives that alternate as DOCs (2). The main aim of this project is to explore the role played by the L2 English learners' L1 in their sensitivity towards the two syntactic variants, with a particular emphasis on the potential crosslinguistic influence effects (or lack thereof) from Spanish into English and the Universal Grammar (UG) effect on their acquisition.UVALAL1.
This article analyzes The Wind of Others (2012), by
Raquel Ochoa, a contemporary Portuguese author
who presents a set of travel chronicles through Cen-
tral and South America, from a feminine perspecti-
ve in search of identity and questioning the native
Other. Passionate about writing and travelling, the
author wanders aimlessly like the wind through
the Andes from Costa Rica to Patagonia in Argen-
tina to emerge in the local culture away from the
more commercial tours. As part of travel literature,
the search for the Other(s) reveals alterity and traces
a critical portrait of the plight of the peoples of Latin
America, which result from the processes of coloni-
zation and globalization. The personal encounters
and adventures blend in a literature of the senses re-
vealing the landscapes, the peoples and the winds
of Latin America from a transatlantic perspective.

Analysis and treatment of a nineteenth century oil painting
This thesis focused on the study and treatment of a 19th century female portrait in oil from ECOMUSEU Municipal do Seixal, Portugal. The portrait, which depicts Isabel Maria Lourenço Affonso was in poor condition and a large strip of paint and canvas was missing (approximately 9cm by 66cm, almost 11% of the total surface area). The portrait is a companion piece to a male portrait (the relationship was established as part of this study), therefore a technical study of both paintings was considered essential to support the choices made during the treatment.
The project involved three main areas:
- The study of the history, condition, materials and techniques of both paintings. This allowed their comparison and understanding of their relationship;
- The treatment of Isabel Maria Lourenço Affonso. The choices made and problems encountered are described.
- The production of a replacement for the missing strip of paint and canvas. The practical solution developed to overcome such an unusual challenge is described along with the creative and flexible thinking required.
Because not all traditional infill materials cope well on a mechanical level with thin layers over a very large surface (many are too brittle), strict criteria had to be employed to choose the appropriate material. The primary goal was to find a fill which would remain flexible and be capable of accepting surface texture, such that there would be a good visual match with the painting. Analysis and testing was carried out to evaluate the physical properties of the fill material chosen, BEVA® Gesso-P.
The successful creation of the replacement strip has resulted in two publications and one presentation:
Publication pending in The Picture Restorer, Leslie Carlyle, Raquel Marques, Isabel Pombo Cardoso and Sara Babo, “Creating a Textured Replacement Strip for the Missing Lower Portion of an Oil Portrait: Problem Solving and Practical Solutions”.
Abstract accepted for presentation and publication, International Meeting on Retouching of Cultural Heritage (2RECH), Raquel Marques, Leslie Carlyle and Isabel Pombo Cardoso, “Textured Replacement Strip for a Missing Portion of a Portrait: Problem Solving and Practical Solutions”

Ofélia Marques (1902-1952): mulher artista no modernismo português.
This study focuses on the analysis of the life and art work of Ofélia Marques, artist of the second generation of Portuguese modernism. Ofélia Gonçalves Pereira da Cruz was born on November 14, 1902, in the civil parish of Santos-O-Velho, in Lisbon. In 1911, she enrolled at Lyceum Maria Pia in Lisbon, and had her first contact with drawing in the female school. She completed her studies in 1916, and in 1918, she entered the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. She attended the degree of Romance Philology, where she met Bernardo Loureiro Marques. Ofélia Marques made her debut in the portuguese art scene in 1926, with illustrations in the children’s column in the Informação and ABC-zinho, and with some decorative works, at the II Salão de Outono, at S.N.B.A. in Lisbon. Until the 1930s, she did illustrations for the Casino, the Civilização and Maria cotovia, the first children's book written by Maria Lamas. Her interaction with Bernardo Marques, whom she married in 1924, was important. Possibly on her own impulse, to which was certainly not unrelated the influence of Bernardo Marques and the modern artistic milieu in Lisbon, from the 1930s, and in the years that followed, she devoted herself exclusively to artistic practice. She conceived numerous illustrations, especially for stories of children universe, published both for the press and in books. At the same time, Ofélia Marques was presented in more than a dozen exhibitions, both in general and modern art exhibitions. Among them, the 5ª. Exposição de Arte Moderna (1940), where she was distinguished with the prize «Sousa Cardoso". In February 1952, she was present at the Exposição dos Artistas Premiados pelo Secretariado Nacional da Informação. She died on December 17 this same year. Posthumously, she was represented in about twenty exhibitions and, in some of them, with works seen for the first time. References to her activity and artistic productions are also to be noted in diaries but, above all, in some studies on contemporary Portuguese art, in scientific articles, and in essays of exhibition catalogues. This study aims to respond to the calls made not to let her die twice, as in Eva of 1967, and in particular by the historians who carried out some research on her work. By presenting and analyzing new facts, as well as by problematizing new questions about her life and art work, it is also intended to contribute to her not continuing to be present at a second line, or even at no line at all, in the historiography of the portuguese art of the twentieth century
Reasonable persuasion: speech in García de la Huerta's Raquel
This thesis investigates the nature of persuasive speeches made by Hernán García and Raquel in order to persuade King Alfonso to turn his attentions respectively toward the Castillian people and Raquel. Each speech uses particular techniques that are born within the genders of the speakers, and each speech is successful because of these strategies. These speeches reflect the contemporary political atmosphere of the author, García de la Huerta's, literary age and reflect a representation of the events surrounding the Esquilache riots. In this way, the author goes beyond a simple demonstration of the world as it is, but in fact accuses Esquilache of misdeeds by demonstrating him to have fallen into feminine habits of excessive greed and emotion that drive him. The author thus warns Carlos III against such influences that are evidenced in gendered persuasive discourse
