The research seeks to understand the relationship between the different forms that the city has acquired over time and contemporary forms of appropriation, based on a theoretical discussion of concepts and criteria of authors who discuss the performance of the form of the city in relation to the appropriation of public spaces. Based on this debate, we selected criteria related to appropriation, both at the scale of city structure and at the scale of place configuration, and proceeded to the characterization and analysis of the contemporary city of Quito in a search to identify spatial patterns directly associated with a positive appropriation of the city in Quito´s culture. The selected criteria and the positive patterns identified oriented the design guidelines here proposed for the architectural design of the Paróquia of Cumbayá - an area of expansion in the city of Quito, Ecuador - in an attempt to comply with the criteria of good urban form performance so as to enhance the appropriation of its public spaces
Biology, like other sciences, has an object of study, the organism, which requires different concepts and methods for its investigation. So often, the advancement of science is due to the fact that, before the same privileged object of study, researchers make use of new concepts allowing the proposal of new questions, from which it is possible to advance in knowledge. In the history of biology, the Kantian concept of organism represented a contribution that enabled the proposal of new questions, that allowed new advances. This study aims at presenting such Kantian concept as a fruitful point that emerges from his critique of the faculty power of judgment. Throughout the history of biology, the concept of organism has varied. From the ancient to the modern, it has been understood in many ways, depending on the worldview within which it was inserted. Aristotle, Spinoza, Descartes devised a concept of organism adjusted to its metaphysics. Such concepts were criticized by Kant, because they were laid on dogmatic metaphysics. Just as his predecessors, Kant conceived a concept of organism adjusted to its conception which, unlike the previous ones, of a dogmatic character, is marked by a transcendental critical approach, which lies in the relationship of knowledge with the cognitive faculty that produces it the key to understand the 'know' and 'knowledge' of the object of biology. Therefore, the biological knowledge in the Kantian thought finds its deepest and safest ground in the knowing subject, the concept of organism, in other words, of an internal material objective purposiveness (natural purpose), contribution of the subject in the 'composition' of biological knowledge, which is a heuristic rule that guides the reflection before the multiple given data, without which objects such as 'organized beings' could not be judged. The concept of organism is a form of what Kant called 'technique of nature' that makes one think of both nature and objects of nature, as if they were art. This analogical concept provides the rule upon which the faculty of reflecting power of judgement depends on in order to fulfill its task, namely, applying the multiple given data, rising from the particular to the universal. Such ability, by submitting the given multiple data to the concept of 'technique of nature', suggests the determinate nature as a system in accordance with empirical laws and determinate objects as final systems. The organism as an object of nature, is not a simple machine, an aggregate of parts, but a system, whose specific feature is to be the cause and effect of itself (natural purpose), being able to reproduce itself as substance, organ, individual and species. Finally, some considerations are made about the impact of the Kantian concept of organism on the conception of mechanistic biologists from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which compared the organism to the machine. According to Kant, this view makes one think of the organism as an expression of an artificial teleology, whereby which the causality according to ends is thought of as a result from the action of an external author to work, leading the cognitive faculty to a transcendent cause, illegitimate in a critical transcendental approach to the knowledge. However, Kant argues, the organism is an expression of the natural teleology, whereby which the causality according with ends is merely thought of by analogy with art, as if it was an effect of a causality according with ends. Thus, the Kantian concept of organism involves a teleology that pictures itself only as an heuristic principle to cognitive faculty, without which it would not be able to know the peculiarities of the organism
The visceral screen: Between the cinemas of John Cassavetes and David Cronenberg, a Barthesian perspective
The thesis discusses two directors who are never considered together in academic discourse. Cassavetes’ perceived focus on events led by the dynamics of performance and his looseness of technique opposes the calculated compositions of the Cronenberg film, with its aesthetic of horrific images and its gallery of emotionally detached protagonists. Yet it is between such opposing methods of cinematic expression that the ineffable qualities of film aesthetics can be discovered. Cassavetes’ cinema achieves this by revelling in a surplus of activity that exceeds narrative, while the indescribable characteristics of the Cronenberg oeuvre is achieved through a systematic emptying of the image’s meaning through a simultaneous commitment to paring back emotion and portraying of images that are controversial and inconceivable. Taken together, the thesis identifies these aspects of film as ‘the visceral,’ a facet of the moving image that most certainly exists, but is resolutely, and disturbingly resistant to interpretation.
Roland Barthes’ writings are integral to a theory of the visceral. His re-evaluation of Saussurean semiology as a method of analyzing and undoing ideologically-imposed meanings informs readings of sequences from Cassavetes and Cronenberg’s films. Following Barthes, the thesis suggests that the existence of the visceral is realized as a resistance to ideological interpretations of the image, and so cannot be described. Ultimately, the inability of semiology to fully grasp certain aspects of the filmed image is put forward as a rejoinder to theories of the fiction film as principally a narrative medium
Exchange Rates and Financial Fragility
In this paper we analyze three views of the relationship between the exchange rate and financial fragility: (1) the moral hazard hypothesis, according to which pegged exchange rates offer implicit insurance against exchange risk and thereby encourage reckless borrowing and lending; (2) the original sin hypothesis, which emphasizes an incompleteness in financial markets which prevents the domestic currency from being used to borrow abroad or to borrow long term even domestically; and (3) the commitment problem hypothesis, which sees financial crises as resulting from neither moral hazard nor original sin but from the weakness of the institutions that address commitment problems. We examine the evidence on these hypotheses and draw out their implications for exchange-rate policy in emerging markets.

DAVID CHALMERS E A REFUTAÇÃO DO MATERIALISMO
fundamental do universo.
David J. Chalmers, one of the most influential contemporary philosophers
of mind, defends the ontological irreducibility of consciousness to physical
properties. According to the Australian philosopher, consciousness – or the
subjective quality of experience – escapes all materialist approaches, once it
remains a mystery why physical/functional processes should be accompanied by
experience. Chalmers argues that, because consciousness cannot be logically
entailed from physical facts, it must be considered as a fundamental property of
the universe. To support his thesis and refute the doctrine of materialism, the
author explores three types of argument, as well as its objections: the
explanatory argument, the knowledge argument and the conceivability argument
(or the zombie argument). The aim of the present work is to investigate, in the
light of these three arguments and the plausibility of non-materialist positions, if
we should really give up on materialism to account for the phenomenon of
consciousness
This work aims to investigate the development of the importance of horror genre in understanding the tragic human condition today. To this end, I investigate the horror genre following the philosophical thought of speculative realism, and particularly the author Eugene Thacker, who recognizes in the spectrum of human extinction that gradually haunts our lives today – environmental disasters, pandemics, wars – the difficulty in thinking of a world where we went extinct. This thought brings a limit within: the image of an unthinkable world that lies on the borders of the dichotomy science and magic. The political need to think about the coexistence between the nonhuman world of natural processes and the objectified human world point to the importance of horror as a privileged epistemological field of research, that has been having, in the knowledge of that coexistence, for a long time, its focus of interest. In that context, I choose to follow my research by examining the thought of the cinema director David Cronenberg, considered a key author of horror. Together with Thacker’s perspective, I investigate the hypotheses that the work of the Canadian director compiles an authorial vision that can be comprehended as an apparatus of a horror worldview. From a singular dichotomy of his work, divided between films with fanciful aesthetics and others with a realistic aesthetics, my proposal follows the intuition that there is on the stress of that contradiction, an elective affinity between the dichotomy reality and fantasy, which link his work to horror. The motivation of this hypothesis is grounded in the assumption that Cronenberg’s films finds their unity as a thought of the human body. By means of the recognition of this affinity, the bodies of his film's characters are revealed as signifiers of monstrosity as thought by Georges Canguilhem. Revealed the monstrosity of the body, the director's authorial vision can be understood as the expression of a fantasy view from nowhere, whose perspective of radical strangeness is revealed as a source of a fundamental horror experience. ‘New Flesh’, an expression coined by the director in one of his films, is used in this research to name the aesthetics concept that will operationalize this affinity between reality and fantasy in Cronenberg's work. By the end of the dissertation, deepening the relation of the New Flesh with the notion of construction of reality, I experiment playfully with this concept as an apparatus of mediation of a horror worldview.Faculdade de Comunicação (FAC)Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicaçã
