Silas Marner, Catalepsy, and Mid-Victorian Medicine: Eliot’s Ethics of Care

    No full text
‘Silas Marner, Catalepsy, and Mid-Victorian Medicine’ reads Eliot's novel Silas Marner through the history of medicine, and particularly in the context of Marner's strange cataleptic trances which embody his alienation and suffering. Eliot, I argue, employs catalepsy in order to investigate ideas of illness and care, especially as that relates to professional medicine and to ideas of community. Focusing on cataleptic case histories and on Eliot's personal health concerns I show how issues of care become philosophical questions about ethical responsibility. It is through Silas Marner and his catalepsy, I conclude, that Victorian scholars can come to understand more about what that means within Eliot's canon and, more widely, in the mid-Victorian period. Overall, the article provides a unique reading of Silas Marner, drawing on significant new archival research on catalepsy and in Eliot's writing of illness narratives

This article deals with poems associated with a German poet of the 13th century known as “Der Marner”, under whose name both Latin and German Lieder as well as Sangsprüche have come down to us. Starting from the peculiar textual history of Marner’s Lieder, the paper discusses crucial questions such as stanza-linking and the overall unity of the poems, while examining the conception of the ‘author’, the formation of the œuvre as a whole, and the poetic status of the different types of poems. Finally the important question of the authenticity of Marner’s Minnelieder is raised. The central thrust of the article is a new interpretation of Marner’s Minnelyrik, one that allows specific poetic patterns to emerge, and thus throws light on the underlying literary interests of the author and cultural movements of which he was a part. What will be argued is that this œuvre, notwithstanding its close adherence to tradition, in fact has a far from conventional organisation and a striking originality of detail. These, it will be claimed, are two strong reasons why – as is also suggested by the unequivocal findings from the textual records – the whole œuvre might more convincingly be attributed to a single Sänger than to a series of different poets. The conclusion is that the corpus of Minnelieder transmitted under the name of “Der Marner” in the so called Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift (Codex Manesse) should be seen as the work of a Sänger who firmly belongs to the tradition of professional singers whose repertoire comprised both Minnelieder and Sangsprüche and who could rely on a considerable poetic ability of their own

These fours strips of parchment were detached from a vocabulary manuscript from the Carthusian Monastery of Basel. They had been used as reinforcing strips in the host volume. Laid out side by side, the strips constitute a part of a scroll of German Sangsprüche. The texts are nine verses by Marner, three verses by Konrad von Würzburg, and eight verses by the Kanzler. The texts were written down around 1300 in the East Alemannic speaking region; the fragments probably were repurposed only a short while later, since the host volume can be dated to 1400.Online Since: 2018-06-1

Employment effects and efficiency of ports

    No full text
Expected increasing transport volumes in Germany and Europe, combined with increasing sustainability requirements, lead to a prospective major role of sea and inland ports in future transport systems. But especially for inland ports this increased expectations more and more lead to conflicts regarding port property denomination as city development heavily pursues non-transport and non-industry dedications, e.g., with high-scale living quarters, recreation and office space concepts like, e.g., in Düsseldorf, Cologne or Duisburg. This research contribution outlines a quantitative analysis of this economic conflict of interest-in contrast to existing research, based mainly on qualitative arguments-especially for public inland port authorities and the main objective of employment effects using the cost-benefit analysis method
