Microbiological investigation in teeth with persistent/secondary endodontic infection in different stages of endodontic retreatment
Influence Of Ultrasonic Activation In Association With Different Final Irrigants On Intracanal Smear Layer Removal
Aim: To evaluate the influence of ultrasonic activation (US) with different irrigant regimens in smear layer removal. Methods: One hundred bovine incisors were instrumented and divided into ten groups (n=10) according to final irrigation protocols: distilled water (DW); DW+US; 17% EDTA; QMix; 10% citric acid; 37% phosphoric acid; 17% EDTA+US; QMix+US; 10% citric acid+US; 37% phosphoric acid+US. The samples were then submitted to scanning electron microscopy where a score system was used to evaluate the images and effectiveness of proposed treatments. The data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests for intergroup comparisons as well as the Wilcoxon and Friedman tests for intragroup comparisons at 5% significance level. Results: In the cervical third, groups 17% EDTA, QMix, 10% citric acid, 17% EDTA+US, QMix+US and 10% citric acid+US were more effective in smear layer removal (p<0.05); in the middle third, groups 17% EDTA+US and QMix+US were more effective in smear layer removal (p<0.05); in the apical third, groups 17% EDTA,17% EDTA+US and QMix+US were more effective in smear layer removal (p<0.05). Conclusions: US can aid 17% EDTA and QMix in smear layer removal at the middle third and QMix at the apical third, contributing to the cleaning of root canal system.15116-2
Método de detecção de vestígios de sangue em instrumental odontológico (limas endodônticas) com o auxílio de Luminol
Infecção cruzada é um termo amplamente discutido entre os profissionais da área de saúde e compreende a passagem de agente etiológico de doença de um indivíduo para outro susceptível. A saliva e o sangue são fluidos biológicos de alto potencial de transmissão infecciosa em ambientes odontológicos. Deste modo, as principais doenças infecciosas relacionadas à atuação do Cirurgião-Dentista são: Herpes Simples, Hepatites e AIDS. A recomendação aos profissionais é que adotem medidas de segurança durante o atendimento aos pacientes, atuando como se todos fossem portadores de microrganismos com potencial para causar doença infecciosa. Portanto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi de investigar a presença ou ausência de vestígio de tecido sanguíneo em 50 limas endodônticas, visível a olho humano ou não, após a realização de tratamentos endodônticos e após os processos de limpeza e esterilização, realizados na Clínica de Graduação da Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba da Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Para a detecção de sangue presente no material odontológico analisado, empregou-se um composto amplamente conhecido e utilizado pela polícia científica em cenas onde ocorreram crimes violentos: Luminol. Os resultados observados por cada examinador foram tabulados e submetidos à análise estatística, utilizando o teste Friedman, com nível de significância de 5% (p<0,05). Destas limas, 31 não apresentaram vestígios de sangue, 8 apresentaram discreta presença de sangue e 11 apresentaram presença considerável de sangue quando analisadas à olho humano. Por outro lado, após utilizar a solução de Luminol para a detecção de sangue, 16 limas endodônticas não apresentaram vestígios, 19 apresentaram leve presença, e 15 apresentaram presença considerável de sangue. Após o processo de esterilização, todas as limas mostraram-se isentas de sangue. Concluiu-se que a solução de Luminol é eficaz na detecção de sangue presente nas limas endodônticas. Mais ainda, que é de fundamental importância a detecção de sangue em instrumentos utilizados na prática odontológica, principalmente após o processo de esterilização, uma vez que o sangue é um material biológico com alto potencial de transmissão infecciosa.Cross-infection is a widely discussed term among health professionals and comprises passing etiological agent of disease from one individual to another susceptible. Saliva and blood are biological fluids with high potential of infectious transmission in dental environments. Thus, the major infectious diseases related to the performance of the Dental Surgeon are: Herpes Simplex, Hepatitis and AIDS. The recommendation for professionals is to adopt security measures for patient care, acting as if they were all carriers of microorganisms with potential to cause infectious disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the presence or absence of traces of blood tissue in 50 endodontic files, visible to the human eye or not, after performing endodontic treatment and after the cleaning and sterilization performed in the Clinic of Graduation at Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas. For the detection of blood in the analyzed dental material, was used a widely known and used compound by forensic at scenes where violent crimes occurred: Luminol. The results obtained by each examiner were tabulated and statistically analyzed using the Friedman test, with significance level of 5 % (p<0.05). Of these files, 31 showed no traces of blood, 8 showed a slight presence of blood and 11 showed considerable presence of blood when analyzed by the human eye. Moreover, after using the Luminol solution for the detection of blood, 16 endodontic files had no traces, 19 showed a slight- and 15 showed a considerable- presence of blood. After the sterilization process all files showed to be free of blood. It was concluded that the Luminol solution is effective in the detection of blood present in endodontic files. Moreover, it is crucial to detect blood in instruments used in dental practice, especially after the sterilization process, since the blood is a biological material with high potential of infectious transmission
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
